- In October 2009, the Turkish Navy G-Class Frigate, the TCG Gediz, was returning home to Turkey following a 4-month deployment to the Indian Ocean. On her way home, however, she received a distress signal from a Greek-owned merchant ship called the MV Theoforos I, which was under attack by pirates. Immediately, the Gediz was re-routed with orders to help the Theoforos and prevent the pirates from boarding ship.

I lived in Turkey for about three years (Izmir) and one of the things I learned with certainty is that Turkey and Greece don't typically get along. Great to learn about this event where the Turkish navy fulfilled their duty and helped a fellow maritime entity, regardless of nation of origin
HaHa…. There have been years in the not too distant past where you might expect the Turkish forces to assist the pirates rather than a Greek ship 🤔
Sailors of all navies have a bond. That bond has often united the most hated enemies. That was evident in WWII during the Battle of Leyte Gulf when Japanese officers saluted American survivors of the destroyer escort Samuel B. Roberts, in the water, as their ship passed barely 100 feet away.
@@matchrocket1702 Also, in the case of destroyer HMS Glowworm vs the heavy cruiser Admiral Hipper, the Captain of the Admiral Hipper sent a recommendation through the Red Cross to the UK that the Captain of the Glowworm should receive a medal for his actions. The Captain of the Hipper was apparently quite impressed by actions of the Glowworm.
@@RadioactiveSherbet Yes, I seem to recall that incident. In the case of the Samuel B. Roberts and the other DEs and destroyers, they had fought the IJN's battle ships, heavy cruisers and numerous destroyers so ferociously and literally to their last shell and final destruction, that the Japanese thought they were fighting cruisers, not the smaller ships. I have read several accounts of that battle. You would be hard pressed to read a better tale of men at their finest.
@@matchrocket1702 Before machinegunning them.
I will never tire of seeing modern-day pirates getting their due justice. I know they are driven into piracy by poverty, poor living conditions and a lawless society but piracy is a dead end.
Seconded
I can agree with this to a degree, it just saddens me that most people exclusively get mad at the poor and downtrodden committing bad decisions because of their situation, and never really even think about the fucked up systems that got them into those situations in the first place.
We're simply caring about the symptoms, not the cause, and if you treat an illness like that it will always come back.
@@atillanandorfuri3343 nailed it.
Don't be mad at the individuals. Get mad at the warlord paying them
Seems like you may be posting a little more, and I really appreciate that as I watch and like every one of your videos and tend to share with some of my family and friends in the military, mostly army and marines. Anyway, keep up the outstanding work. Hope you continue growing and expanding your channel and doing more videos. I will continue being a subscriber and trying to spread the word!
Amazing channel.
As a Turkish person who is following you for years I'm really happy to see Turkish content in this channel, Thank You! And your pronunciations are really good. Just a quick note: Su Altı Taarruz got the same training program as US SEALs and South Korean UDT/SEALs they are all brother units so you can call them UDT or SEALS whatever you want.
Poor pirates bumped in Turkey's elitest Task force
Good to see the Turks and Greeks getting along as they are usually at loggerheads with each other 👍Great stuff
That pirate arsenal definitely had seen better days.
Though still lethal. Soviet produced some awfully simple, but efficient weaapons and equipment....
@@Lassisvulgaris Not after all that salt water exposure.
@@cstgraphpads2091 You may be right. Though, during my INTOPS service I saw weapons in various states, still working, and if close enough, they would hit....
Well done to the brave Turkish crew
The AK with a “USA” sling will never not be funny
Lmao I was checking to see if anybody else noticed that. I wonder if those lads had a sense of humor.
Big kudos to the Turks for coming to the rescue here
Glad to see Turkish navy protecting it's neighboring country from pirates good job
Nice piece mate, keep 'em coming.
Amazing how they tried to keep on pirating even after a frigate showed up. Not smart
Imagine trying to be a pirate with less guns that are in worse shape than those found in most Texas households.
Soviet produced lots of rough weapons and equipment. AK will work under almost any condition, even negligence....
@@Lassisvulgaris It will "work" only in the sense that it will fire, which means fuck all if you can't hit your target.
In the case of the pirates the guns are more for intimidation than anything else, so accuracy isn’t really a concern
I love videos like these can anyone recommend any other channels with similar content type
great video
I swore I thought you had one in the Mail Radisson Blu incident.
Cool vid
😮 looks great for mission wish they succeed as they want to ❤
The coastline of Somalia is now 10 years under Turkish security
And after that somalia will have it own navy with Turkish made ships
🇹🇷🤝🇸🇴
Great video! Those pirates must be really stupid or really desperate. Maybe a combination of both.
nice
I didn't know task Force 141 had a brother task force.
Surprised those weapons can shoot looking at the state of them
AK 47 was dwsigned to work under any condition, so it will take a lot to malfunction.....
@@Lassisvulgaris Not really.
Jeez check out the rust on those weapons
Still working, as Soviet produced some pretty durable stuff....
I hope they don't just move operations south or west
No one gonna talk about the name 151 hmmm sounds familiar somehow lol
❤️
USA 🇺🇸 on a sling from a Somali pirate’s captured pitted AK 😂
Some jokes just write themselves
Couldn’t make it up 😂
Pirates should have zero rights. They should be immediately and without hesitation, blown out of the water. Not doing so, and allowing them a lawyer is why they continue to be criminals.
Make a vídeo about Roy benavidez six hours in hell in Vietnam war
Watch war time stories he does fantastic vid on him
I find it absolutely mind boggling that we would allow pirates(!) to exist and operate at this time in history! We have bombed everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, by now, how haven't we bombed their ships and bases to oblivion yet?
Maybe because we don't want to lower ourselves to their level....
As for bombing everyone, we saw how that ended up in Afghanistan....
It's not that simple
Somalia is notirous for it's piracy because quite frankly, Somalia is a country in name only. The only part of it that isn't in a state of anarchy is the semi-independent Somaliland.
Does Anyone have a strong argument why these guys aren’t killed on sight? It seems like it would dampen the desire for others.
First 🥇
THIS VIDEO SHOWS THEY WERE ARRESTED, HOW WOULD YOU SAY THEY WERE NEUTRALIZED?
Because them being arrested means they're no longer out on the seas, duh.
He did not give account of their whereabouts at the end of the video.
Neutralized doesn’t mean killed. It just means they’re no longer a threat
…it’s just that when the military is concerned, no longer being a threat often takes the form of being dead
@@theravenlordmasterofthevib8991
You need English classes.
Neutralized as in they are no longer a threat. You might want to look up a dictionary
Yeah but the Turks harass the Greeks at every opportunity they get. This was nothing but an action used for political leverage. They were obligated to do this. And not by good will.
your reading way too much into it. A Naval ship on a task force helping a civilian ship against pirates, nothing more.
Do your research…. Compare military infractions in total. Comprehensively. but you’re not not admitting the truth. And the truth is the Turks have infiltrated every country in Europe. And YOU CALL ME RACIST! I am a mixed race married to a Brazilian and our son is mixed race. The last resort of a dying argument is saying that word…. Shame on you
As both are NATO members, they will be obligated to support each other, in case of war.....
@@notoriousdip5495 "The truth is the Turks have infiltrated every country in Europe" Can you please produce your evidence and documentation on Turkish INFILTRATION (not migration), i.e. evidence for military/terrorist groups...?
Motivated by self-interest, for sure, but I think you're overanalysing this. It's in the interests of everyone who sends ships through the Red Sea to stop piracy, no matter who the victim is.
