"Well meaning fool, pick up thy bed and rise up from your gloom SMILING. Give me your hate and do as the loving heathen do." Closest thing I ever heard to a miracle on vinyl.
I LOVE where he sings "that forsaken paradise that calls itself HELL", with the loud whisper behind the word "hell". So emotionally effective!
Also such clever wordplay where he sings "I would give two or three for..." (four)
Mr Pope - I am a first-time viewer of your channel and your appreciation for prog rock warms my heart! This particular album is one of my all-time favorites. Kudos bro 👍
All the guys in the band were in their mid 20s when this was recorded. What other 26 year old musician today can do this. The complexity, time changes and signatures were very difficult to comprehend as far as the music critics and some fans went and they couldn't understand it. The music was all over the place going in different directions at times but still sounded coherent. Progressive music at its finest and best. Tull were always heads above the rest of their progressive contemporaries like Yes, Genesis, king crimson etc. This was the bands 2nd number one album in a row with only one song on it stretching both sides. No band or solo artist in history can ever have that in their resume. Give Budapest from crest of a knave a listen to. I recommend the studio version. It's another great example of what kind of musical genius Ian is
Barlow is a monster!
A Passion Play: what an incredible album!! ❤
I always have sore neck from head banging after I listen to this album. He's evoking so many theories and legends about heaven and hell and life and death. It all builds up to such an emotional crescendo at the end. A Passion Play and Thick as a Brick are un-matched masterpieces in not just rock, but in musical history, in my opinion.
Agreed. Unmatched masterpieces. APP took me 30 years, no kidding, to get my mind wrapped around, but in the last 3 years, I LOVE it.
Side two of thick as q brick after the 4th minute goes down hill, sorry but I and tons and tons of Tull fans think the same BUT The Passion goes all the way and for that there's no doubt !!!!!
This album is transcendent.
The "Edit 8" part, starting with "Colours I've none" just gets me every time. Shows the Devil himself in rather a different perspective. Best song about Lucifer since the Stone's "Sympathy". Hehe.
Their masterpiece ! They have never gone so far in creativity.
Oh but they have! You know what i think, so a response is not required.
I hope Jethro Tull "Songs from the Wood" is in the future
great review, you get it! Welcome to all things Tull, so much more to explore
Thank You Man :-) Excellent Music !!!
Side 2 of Passion Play is the very best album side of all Tull albums.
This album sounds like a jam based on "The Chateau D'Herouville Sessions" - best album Jethro Tull ever made. Highly recommended.
Dear Mr Pope, love how you let the music inhabit your body as you listen. That must be a bit like i would appear to the fam when i have the headphones on!
Well done, Pope. Quite a journey hey ! Your ability to listen is a great asset and it will serve you well in Life friend.
☮️💙💙💙brilliance
It's about the afterlife
You look like I felt the first time I heard this a few years ago...perplexed.
Try to watch him live , then you will understand what kind of a character he is .very charismatic.
Kudos to you my young brother, for appreciating some of the greatest music that has ever been created... God Bless Jethro Tull and I saw this live when I just was twelve!
The Story of the Hare Who Lost His Spectacles is worth the price of admission . 💜
That was something, wasn't it? I have always loved this album (and 'Thick as a Brick') as these long albums required you to pay attention to the lyrics as well as the music to get you to figure out the story.
Alright Alright Brave Man!!
Big thumbs up! great reaction, by the way, that's Ian on the Saxophones too!
Some sum it up as 'Progressive' I remember seeing this concert 5 nights in a row at Madison Square Garden...As you noted it picks up on part 2. It is about a wandering soul...
Oh man you know it's so trippy dude my brother went to summer school and I went back to the Midwest to visit my grandparents and my Dad who had been divorced for many years and my brother luckily went to see Jethro Tull at the fabulous forum and they did this whole album at the very end of the album there was this phone that started ringing and this light went on to the phone Indian Anderson came out and answer the phone and started talking and then he looked at the audience and held the receiver to the audience and said it's for you and then walked off stage
Yeah, it's 23:00 because the first 90 seconds is from side 1. Just so you know, 2:20- into this video is where side 1 of the album REALLY ends!! That sound was a flute and a synthesizer.
Now, I thi8nk you're ready for, "Minstrel In The Gallery".
Have you ever gotten into any of the "classic 7" Moody Blues albums? I used to work at Cedar Point in `78 right when "Octave" came out and there were guys that lived at the end of the hall from me that played Moody Blues albums over and over again all summer long!!
Another one you might be interested in is, "A Wizard / A True Star" by Todd Rundgren. It's got maybe 20 songs on it but they're all joined together on each side as if they're all one song. He's got a lot of great albums out, at least the first 15 or 20 but, having worked with him and heard from others that have worked with him, he's kind of a jerk! Very talented guy but, he DOES tend to think his shit don't stink!
I don't know if this will play the full album but, there's 7 songs on it. These 3 guys are from Germany and only did 3 albums as a trio. After that, Shicke (the drummer) left and they did at least one album without him. ruclips.net/video/UUl6_S9egOA/видео.html And, here's a link to some info on the album. www.45worlds.com/vinyl/album/0060173
Haaa that was fun -- its such a quirky odd Pythonistic little faerie tale -- I love the speech pronunciations --- This story reminds me of Facebook - everyone has a opinion and tells you what you should do but hare didnt ask for help or want it or need it -- Mind your own business --- As for the rest of the story our young man who turned away from Heaven and finding Hell no better has decided he wants to return to the living and begin his journey anew --- And so the Passion Play begins again --- Love your analogy of Tull sounding like they are riding a time machine -- A long time ago someone left in the comments that Ian Anderson resembles known portraits of William Shakespeare -- Ha that made me imagine Ian could be a Time Lord and brings all his talents and experiences together and paint a picture with music and lyrics -- This album could be the story of Ian reincarnating over and over through the ages -- I like that idea --- Oh and Pope I do hope you will check out Living In The Past album that was released in 1972 right before Passion Play -- I dont understand why its left off their diskography list but its a double album that has some remixes of past songs included but also songs that dont appear on any of their other albums --- it was and is my most treasured Tull album of them all --
There is a video of "The story of the hare lost his Spectacles" on RUclips. It was shown on the screen behind the stage when they played this live back in 1973
Furthermore I’m 73 and got hooked on Tull in 71 with Aqualung and saw the tour show and was blown away by the performance which included a 15 minute section of Thick as a Brick which wasn’t released until early 1972! So continue to listen to each album after Passion Play and post your reviews Thanks
Your reaction to this Masterpiece is awesome!
If you haven't heard this album for a while it will really knock you for a loop! And if you have never heard it before, I can't even imagine. It seemed like you were experiencing about three lifetimes in one sitting! Right up there with some of Frank Zappa's best, like Inca Roads, for most innovative music ever!
Grew up in Dallas in the early 70s. Never missed a JT show including The Passion Play live which had a film for the hare that lost his spectacles. Anderson and the band were consummate showmen. All for $12.50.!!
A brave song to play.
Yay! I was afraid you weren't going to release pt 2.
You're a very impressive young man.
This is a bit tiring, isn't it? It's so intense and it takes you on such a journey. You can't forecast it. It brings back memories of previous melodies and you can never tell when something's a transition or a new segment.
I love the transition at about minute 1456
Its called progressive rock
Ian;s father said in a interview that he did;t care for his son;s music at all, until he saw the first royalty check. Then he was quite fond of it.
You are just beginning to discover the tremendous amount of music that has been produced by this band , so continue to listen to their entire catalog of albums and I guarantee you will love and appreciate Also check out the various live video performances from 1970 Isle of Wight and others. It helps if you listen to the studio album first. Other videos feature songs from 1971 - 1982 from those albums reieasefd in that period. I really like your reactions to Tull. Keep listening to their entire catalog Thanks for your reactions to one of the best bands of this era
A PASSION PLAY was originally planned as a 2 LP set . The label refused to release the whole crazy mind flip . Songs that came out later with similar content included BUNGLE IN THE JUNGLE and BACK DOOR ANGEL .
Two Fingers as well.
Hey Pope! Hope you are good. TULL! Let's do it!🔈🔉🔊
I saw that tour...just amazing...!!!
Tullllllll 😁
other good albums are Minstrel in the Gallery, Songs from the Wood, and Stormwatch.
many more... but those are gems
I label it a masterpiece.
Your reaction to "The Hare Who Lost His Spectacles" is awesome!!!! That was my reaction when I first heard this at 14 years of age in 1984. WTF!!!!!!!
wasn’t expecting that at all 😆
@@POPE. 🤣🤣
You should have played the Steven Wilson Remixed version which on The Foot Of Our Stairs section has 2 extra verses which are incredible!!!!
Had this 8-track.
A more straightforward Tull lp to check out would be 'Minstrel in the Gallery'.
Very impressive song writing and musicianship.
'Cold Wind to Valhalla', 'Black Satin Dancer' among others are great examples.
Absolutely, Minstrel is also the next album chronologically. The style changes over to a English folk/Hard rock sound.
Also, there is a RUclips video of the movie that goes with the specetacals story, that was the intermission between parts 1 and 2: ruclips.net/video/Par0zw3AAxo/видео.html
@@fordp69 Minstrel is not the next album in Jethro Tull's discography in chronological order, but War Child !
@@a.k.1740 Yup, my mistake, I must have blocked it out.
@A. K. • And a fine album it is also. 'Back Door Angels' for example.
@@phillyflyer12 Absolutely ! It's one of my favorites from Jethro Tull and I've always found the sound universe of the War Child album to be a bit of a musical extension of A Passion Play but in a short format.
Great reaction, Pope! I love that you're doing concept albums. Last night near Detroit I saw the incredible Genesis tribute band The Musical Box perform the entire Lamb Lies Down on Broadway album played to perfection, with the original visuals used by Genesis in 1974/75. I cannot wait to share your reaction to The Lamb! Enjoy!
Where did the Musical Box play? I live in Ann Arbor and didn't know they were in the area. Rats!
@@debrabrabenec3731 Hi Debra, sorry you missed The Musical Box. They were at the Royal Oak Music Theater but it was not well advertised and the venue was only 3/4 full. But they always get a great reception here (and in Grand Rapids) and will come back again. I hope you can see them soon. There are some good videos on RUclips and their website. They have been around since 1994 and their audience is huge. All the members of Genesis have seen them live and raved about them, and Steve Hackett and Phil Collins have joined them onstage. Cheers!
Its the quirky side of eccentric Englishmen.
That's "speck-ta-ca-cles". It always kills me when he says that.
Anderson is the court jester. The bard of the kings Court. A Medieval singer, try playing. song of the woods.
You just compared Ian Anderson and Robert Johnson; I subscribed. You are a brilliant young man. I can't wait to see more of your impressions.
too kind 🙏🏿 welcome.
Humbly suggest you try the 'Hamburger concerto' by the band Focus. or 'eruption' by the same band. both are works of geniuz.
Hey man I could use that lifetime of luck thanks a lot for that brother
My favorite Tull album along with Thick as a Brick and the compilation album Living in the Past.
You seem to enjoy Progressive Rock a lot but you've not gotten to two of the best albums in the genre...Genesis "Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" and Alan Parson's Project "Tales of Mystery and Imagination". You have to give them a listen!
Would love to stay ..lol…but I can’t …
understandable
Yeah man but you know you got away from the devil and then he rolled the stone away just like when Christ came back and then made his Ascension anyhow yeah this whole album was done it was like a remake because they went to France to try to avoid paying taxes and they recorded all this stuff but then of course it came back to bite him in the ass so they ditched the whole project and then they came back to England and they remade everything and then some of the things from the previous project ended up on war child anyhow there is an obscure album of the stuff they had done and when they were in France there are some cool little bonuses there all right my man I'm glad you really enjoyed that because I'm telling you it just doesn't really get much better than that I wish it would every once in awhile you might get a glimmer of something that's on par with it alright Captain will check you on the next drop
Have you heard Part 1?

Kia ora cuzz from Aotearoa new zealand hay please check out Kiwi ROOT'S Band TRINITY ROOT'S song CITIZEN live at the tuning fork i think you might enjoy my cuzz
Man, if you think Jethro Tull is awesome, you should check out his father, Jed Tull, and his sister, Ellie Mae Tull.
When this came out, I was taking the Hippie Train from Charlotte to San Francisco, using my thumb, and the kindness of hippies. At one stop, there was an outdoor party in someone's backyard in the midwest, with a bonfire, and this song playing amid the smoke and haze, so to speak. At another stop, I was treated to the band, It's a Beautiful Day's epic song about peace, called "White Bird". A calm and timely song to review. Peace to the soul.
Side A of Thick As A BRICK IS JUST AS GREAT AS ANYTHING ON PASSION PLAY. But after the 3rd minute of side two of Thick As A Brick it all goes to shit, sorry but very true, me and tons and tons and tons of Tull fans think the same BUT The Passion Play goes all the way and for that there is no doubt !!!!!!!!! Love both albums. but I will take this one over Thick as a Brick in a heart beat !!!!
Wtf bro??
?
Apparently you have not listened to this album enough to appreciate the music and lyrics. It took me a few years to understand how great it is and I have the whole catalog of Tull and I consider Passion Play to be Ian’s masterpiece. So give it more listenings. And yes Thick as a Brick is also a masterpiece
I'd prefer Thick as a Brick to this album any day. A Passion Play is not representative of the band's work.
What does it matter that A Passion Play is not representative of the band's work? The albums A and Under Wraps aren't representative as well but personally I like them, that's all that matters to me !
@@a.k.1740 Fair enough.
Despite the back and forth, you're still correct in suggesting that it's not representative and imo sticks out like the proverbial sore thumb amongst their huge catalogue!
You are missing something here. IMHOP this is Tull’s masterpiece and definitely represents the band’s work
