Going into it, Satisfied was definitely my favorite song. Now, I'm fascinated by "Wait for It". It's a brilliant look into Burr's mindset, motivations, and frustration.
@@DayleSong the lyrics were very touching "we'll bleed and fight for you, we'll make it right for you (...) we'll give the world to you" and the way it shows a break in both characters (Aaron Burr and Hamilton) who both appear to be more focused on work than on their wives. This song is also the only thing they actually have in common, without "ifs/buts". Lastly the melody is very high yet soothing, paired with many string instruments and Leslie has a LOVELY higher register that is extremely soothing. The harmony between him and Lin at the end is just beautiful. It may not be the song with a lot of historical facts/amazing rap or whatever, but you can feel the love, it's so pure and genuine.

I loved how you pointed out the fact that Alexander doesn't tell Angelica about his backstory but told Eliza about it in brief detail during helpless, but I wish you focused more on what that said about the characters--Angelica didn't need Alexander to tell her that he's "penniless" and "flying by the seat of his pants" and that he came from a low background. She figured all of that out just by him avoiding the subject with her and because they're so mentally in tune. Meanwhile, Eliza had to have Alexander tell her, and this shows later on in the musical where she's always wondering what's in his mind and wants him to "let her in". Wonderful analysis irregardless, this has to be my favorite reaction & review for Hamilton and I hope you do more!
There was an Angelica song/scene cut from the off broadway production that didn’t make it to broadway. It’s called Congratulations. You should look it up on RUclips and listen to it. It will give you a little more insight into the Angelica character. Loved your analysis of the Satisfied scene by the way. Please do more? Also my favorite song/scene is the Room Where it Happens but Satisfied is a very close second.

This scene was the point in the show that drew me in. I only watched through Helpless with my grandma, and I wasn't sure if I could make time to sit through the rest. The moment the ensemble said "rewind" and everything started spinning, I was into the scene. Then Renée Elise Goldsberry's performance blows it out of the water. I love the parallels between Helpless and Satisfied. Even if Angelica doesn't have a huge role to play for most of the story, this song kept me watching if only for the rewind sequence alone. That feels like the kind of thing only a movie can pull off, and yet they nailed it in a stage performance using a turntable and lights. It's brilliant.
my favourite thing about this scena and Angelica as a character is how HER great love story is that of her sisters, more specifically her love for Eliza. I think above all, her choosing to introduce Eliza and Alexander (in context of the show) is her picking her truest love, which is Eliza, over any potential satisfaction she might have felt if she kept Hamilton to herself and a part of me feels that while she used her mind more than her heart, the bringing together of her sister and Alexander was proof of how she also has quite a bit of heart because she does what she knows Eliza would do if Angelica had mentioned her attraction to him, which is to stand by and support the other even when it hurts, BECAUSE of her heart so they are quite similar in that Angelica lets her heart lead her when it comes to her sister.
The purpose of Angelica was to have someone who understood Alexander the best. When they wrote letters, she gave him opinions on how to deal with his political rivals, and it was shown that he trusted her as a confidante. It was also mentioned in Elizas final song that Angelica helped her organize and understand all of Hamilton’s writings (since she knew him best).
Hi AJgames29! Renee is very strong, I agree. Studio singing or singing apart from doing the stage action produces a different result, most certainly. The Hamifilm was largely performed before a live audience and every night will feel different for a performer, so I can just imagine the pressure the cast must have felt to be at the top of their game while on camera.
Why have Angelica as a character? This is my theory...Because up until the end of the musical were Eliza does come out as the hero of the story, she is as you described her, ruled by her heart, and even meek. I think Lin wanted to include a character who was a powerful, smart woman. A more modern version of how women behave now. Angelica is aware she is a woman and the limitations that brings her, but she is not going to be Satisfied with that status. She will give her opinion openly on things that are not in the preview of traditional female characters from the 1700s. From my understanding, the actual Angelica was like that too. And I for one appreciated that Lin included her instead of stopping at the meek, forgiving wife (turned superhero, yes, but not till the end) and the hussy.
Of course there's a double entendre! Also "set my heart aflame, every part aflame". That's one of the many things I love about Hamilton, the characters reveal their real human sexuality that we know existed behind the stuffy patrician language in the history books.

Both moments struck me similarly, and part of the point of the show as written is to rewrite those stodgy history books and view these people as having real human emotions and drive. To see them as people at all! The only reason it wasn't clear to me upon watching was that I thought the moment could have been acted with more intention towards the double entendre. So much goes by so fast when words fly at 400 wpm!
Hi vanash4! Thank you for sharing that. I also think that line stands out as a superb lyric! I'm not sure I've ever heard it used as an adjective before, and I don't find it elsewhere as such online. It's quite creative to condense the thought into a few words like that to produce a single image, especially when words fly by so fast! We see that Angelica takes notice of his intelligence, but *hunger pang* brings 2 ideas to mind: first, that he is poor and possibly thin and wan from hunger (not likely the actual case, but possible from where he starts out in the show); and second, that there is hunger in his soul--a burning desire to advance his station and dedicate his mind to the founding of this new nation. As an immigrant himself, I imagine his fervor to have been all the more passionate to contribute towards the country of his choice. Angelica, wanting to satisfy her own intellect and match minds with someone out there, latches onto this instantly.
I personally believe she’s a parallel to Alexander that helps him because he knows she’ll understand him. Because he needs someone in his life that understands the worlds he creates in his mind and Angelica unlike Eliza can truly understand that feeling. Shes also a folly to Elizas character. Angelica is all about mind and work and quick wit while Elizas the heart and family and patience. Throughout the musical she serves as Elizas and Alexander’s support system for there different needs while putting her own wants aside.
From a visual storytelling standpoint, Satisfied is as creative as anything put on stage. Musically, Burn and One More Time are stunning. Hard to choose a favorite.
One other brilliant thing that you only notice when you watch the musical with captions, the last lines in the scene are "He will never be satisfied. I will never be satisfied" As Hamilton walks away with Eliza he looks back at Angelica. So it sets up straight from there that he's not as happy in his marriage as he could, and the reason why he is infatuated with Angelica later and writes to her while she lives in London.
Also "he will never be satisfied" because his mind is restless and can't retire contently after achieving a great feat. That is what Eliza wanted for them. That after achieving independence he would just become a local businessman and forget about politics. But that was not his nature as Angelica quickly perceived. He's one of those individuals that works furiously until the day he dies

From what I understand, the idea for the Angelica-Alexander closeness stemmed from letters found between Angelica and Elizabeth, where. Angelica asks if she can borrow Alex for a night or two. And also, in historical letters, Alexander did refer to her as "My dear Angelica in many letters between the two

I'm biased because I love Renee Elise Goldsberry. I thought she brought down the house. Despite the fact that you point out that she is kind of dropped except for a couple of scenes here and there, Renee's performance really brought Angelica to life and left me wanting more than her just being some 3rd wheel or a romantic protagonist. I loved this song. The whole rewind concept and the astounding job the chorus/dancers did rewinding their movements was so clever. It was a standout scene for me. I honestly loved it more than Burn and definitely Helpless which someone else mentioned (that's partly because I really hate the higher key in which Eliza songs tended to go toward. It just grates me). Maybe I relate to Angelica more than Eliza even though I know Eliza's accomplishments were more impressive, I'm 'the oldest and wittiest in my family etc. Eliza was meh to me. lol I'm sitting here thinking hmm what does that mean. I'm not trying to take sides, just rambling my observations. That was an excellent review, btw. Thank you.
Hi Noel! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the characters. I enjoyed reading how you feel about it personally. It gives me a measure of how people are taking in the show. I neglected to commend Renee's powerful performance.. From the moment she appears onstage, you know exactly who Angelica is. More attention is given to Eliza, and though Angelica might have an entire musical written about her, Eliza's arc in this show is well scripted and helps us empathize with the tragedy of a flawed individual -- that is especially, how Hamilton affected those around him. It's a good moral tale, which Eliza helps tell. But I agree: Angelica was given a brilliantly effective scene with Satisfied and then short shrift the rest of the time. There just too much to cover in this story! Good thing they sing at 400 words a minute! Lol. Please subscribe. I'll do more coming up.
Thanks, The Little Paloma. When I say she says, "May you always be satisfied /I will never be satisfied," I am referring to the two end points of the frame story. "May you..." comes at 2:53 (of this video) right before "Rewind!" and in the end she says what you quote above. She turns it around from a toast to a realization of her own story. As far as screen time, Angelica is featured at the beginning while Eliza finishes the show... they're opposite brain/heart and they balanced the show and Alexander... beautifully and with spectacular verve!
Hi Melissa. Thanks for your thoughts. I agree that there is an important balance struck between the women and Alexander. Both stories are told: that of forefathers and foremothers, as well. Yet, I find the time spent on Satisfied to be inordinately long for the story it tells. It develops the character of Angelica well, but then takes it nowhere throughout the rest of the show. My point is that the play could have progressed clearly without it, so I'm not sure why so much time was given to it. For me it's a matter of imbalance in the choosing of moments in the play. However, it's so well composed in and of itself that it warrants been seen.
@@DayleSong I imagine it's because it's playing out "never being satisfied" as the idealised version of Angelica and Alexander... when they bring Satisfied back after the Reynolds affair, she attacks him with the line "God, I hope you're satisfied". Meanwhile, Eliza comes out like a firecracker after this and even more after he dies. As a partially related aside, I think it's to shadow some people's automatic assumptions that the idealised couple would be Angelica and Alexander - conversations I've seen say they would have been a real power couple... I think the show is trying to tell us that they are TOO similar to be a couple. *BTW, I say "idealised" because, like any show, Hamilton plays with the actual timeline and people in the events: the sisters had brothers and I'm pretty sure the real Angelica was already married when Alexander and Eliza got together.
Hi Melissa, Yes, Angelica was married to John Church 3 years prior to meeting Hamilton, but there was a close correspondence between her and Alexander, and as Eliza states, Angelica is indeed buried near him. Miranda repeats certain words throughout the show turning their meanings around to suit the situation and emotional change, such as satisfied, helpless. burn, among others. Eliza does show herself to have great internal strength for all she endures. Her legacy is well represented here. It's appropriate that she ends the show, because it's as much her story as Alexander's, and she does spend the rest of her life promoting his legacy. It's unexpected, truly, and a welcome change to honoring only men in the history books.
@@DayleSong Two of my favourite script choices about the sisters are the "comma flirting" between Alexander and Angelica and the last words Alexander says to Eliza "Take your time" which she is able to do since the real Eliza lived for so long after Alexander was shot.
Man, you gotta react to Congratulations, it continues Angelica's story with Alexander a little bit, but it got cut from the Musical due to time restrictions.
Angelica comes back when the affair comes to light to support her sister & not Hamilton (blow to his ego) in The Reynolds Pamphlet. It's a reprise of how she knows her sister. She illustrates how his witty use of words that served him in his climb to power positions has its limits when he is only using them to serve himself.
Thanks for mentioning that moment, Anitra! Yes, indeed, Angelica shows up and asserts her opinion strongly in keeping with her character and her fierce protection of her sister. However, that would have been a great moment to balance out the extended feature she has in Satisfied. It would have expanded her role and rounded out her place in the show. I understand her song that was cut ("Congratulations") did exactly that--excoriated him for the Reynolds Pamphlet (and some of its music was retained in that section) but I have yet to hear it. Angelica is my favourite female character in the play and Satisfied is in my top 5 favourite songs in the play. It's interesting to think of it being a scene rather than a song in musical theatre since Hamilton is pretty much a collection of scenes done in song.

Wrong ... he didnt see through Angelica. Listen to the lyrics, he liked her. But she saw her sister was crazy about him and gave him to her sister whom she loves dearly,. However Anjelica hadn’t realized how attracted to Alexander she was in fact her Quick banter got her into trouble.

It does, Rowan, I agree! There is such heart in how she reflects on her own story. I wish her role was fleshed out more with the other song (that was cut from Act II) so we could fix her in the story more, but we still see from this who she is as a person and what she contributes to our understanding of Alexander and Eliza as they enter the show. Something in the back of my brain recalls that perhaps this scene was written early on in the creation of the show and set the tone for the rest. I'm not sure, but it would compute.

Yes, we are indeed talking about an historic personage, and as such we walk the line between the real history and the symbolism Hamilton as a character brings to the story being told by the musical. What the musical does really well is to bring a 3-dimensionality to Alexander Hamilton, even if not all the details are historically accurate. He was indeed killed in the dual and he did act as a catalyst in many people's lives as he lived and died. The writing here allows us to reach back in time and enter his story with compassion and empathy. I say "spoiler" because it is a rather well known detail that he dies. And we enter the show knowing that. So, "wink wink!"

Hi Kristine! I am so tickled that you mentioned this! Yes, indeed, I chose "goofy" musics intentionally. I love quirky stuff! And there is little else that satisfies me like French accordion music! 👨🎨
I...would strongly argue against the view of Angelica NOT holding any significance in the story other than this. Just like Hamilton became the only intellectual match for her to level with, she was someone who Hamilton could talk(write) to without having to worry about saying anything wrong. Thus you see the scenes with them communicating, even flirting through their letters. She is a significant individual to both Alexander and Eliza Hamilton, and the show is named Hamilton, and not by Alexander Hamilton the full name. It is crucial that we know this telling of Alexander's life is the dream of Eliza, also her dying wish. It's what she fought for decades to be told. And so, Angelica, a person dear to both protagonists (yes I would argue that Eliza is also the protagonist) has every right to be in the show.
Who is she in the play? Shes the woman that introduced him to his wife. Like youve stated, his life wouldve been so different if shed pursued him and thought about her happiness before her sisters.
Thanks for writing in, Vince! It makes for a more interesting play when we can feel the character's emotional choice being made and the regret they feel for a missed opportunity, as in this case. However, in reality, Angelica was already married at the time she met Hamilton, so there was no option but for Angelica to let him slip through her fingers. That historical fact couldn't be changed, even if her motivations are made up. It's also true that they felt affection towards one another evidenced in their letters, so it is a strong historical element to include in the overall story.
Angelica and Alexander are the same. She marries and goes away, but they maintain correspondence. They speak of getting their car one another and then another letter comes and they are hooked all over again in the song ‘Take A Break’. Angelica questions the placement of a comma in Alexander’s last letter “My dearest, Angelica…” and she comes home for a visit. She and Eliza try to convince him to go upstate. I always thought that he felt that he and Angelica were close to crossing the red line into a physical relationship. Their correspondence leads me to believe that they shared a romantic love that was wrapped up in political machinations and the like, but they would never be satisfied with keeping it chaste. I know this isn’t historically accurate, but by the plays standards it fits. He cheats on Eliza, and he cheats on Angelica too. Angelica pops up when Philip dies. According to Burr Eliza and Angelica were at Alexander’s side after the dual. According to Eliza, Angelica is buried close to Alexander, which makes me think that she is aware of their attraction. My two cents - when Alexander opened with you strike me as woman whose never been satisfied, the double entendres doesn’t strike me as anything other than something to use as cover by Angelica. She’s been seen, truly seen for the first time by a man of intellect. He says “you’re like me.” I’m sure that blew her mind, but alas they were indeed too much alike in what they needed from a match. When Angelica does marry, she says he’s dull but rich and no man could match Alexander’s wit. Then she’s carried away as she sets sail for England and Eliza slides into frame beside her husband, who she now has to herself.
This was one of my favorite songs and themes in the play. I think you could talk about the singing a but more, I think the lyrics speak for themselves.

I focus a lot on lyrics because they are the basis for interpretation, and understanding more behind the text changes how the voice produces "the color" of what you are singing--like a vocal reflex. I could indeed go into such aspects of singing more in the video itself and I will aim to do so when it pops out at me. One of the tough things about Hamilton is that the singing is not often lyrical. There's a lot of talk-singing (rap) and it moves so fast, the singing becomes more about stamina than production. Historically Angelica was already married by the time Alexander married her sister Eliza. It's my take that from the first moment we meet Angelica she is looking for someone who is intellectually stimulating because she was a New York socialite which would be very boring for an intellectual woman. She would be stuck at teas and sewing circles surrounded by woman who did little more then gossip about the latest scandal or fashion. She was looking for a more stimulating conversation to satisfy her intellectual curiosity. If she was in a normal marriage of the age her husband thought her place was to be in the home and society not to pursue intellectual issues. When she meets Alexander she finally meets someone on level with her and who respects her as an equal in mental capacity. They wrote each other throughout their lives. She gave him advice and he respected her insights. For a woman of the time who though brilliant was surrounded by people telling her she should be happy with brainless pursuits it would be addictive to have an outlet that allowed her to use her Brain. To me the term satisfied while it may have a double meaning its main meaning is that they each wish to satisfy their curiosity about the world and to make their mark. They will never be satisfied with anything less and until their dying day they will both feel that they hadn't done enough. She is seeing someone with the same need to learn and then use their knowledge but they are not destine to be a pair so neither will be fully satisfied as they could have done far more together than apart. Sorry for the ramble but that's what I think.

What I'm getting from you is that she very well could have been married already in the musical as in life and that being satisfied is both impossible for them because they can't be a pair and more so because they are intellectually eternally curious minds that will never be finished in seeking out knowledge and mental stimulation. I like that slant on it. It doesn't ignore the reality of history. But I need to ponder on which makes for a stronger choice for the character. The intellectual part is pretty clear in both scenarios. But why would she need to rewind--which I take as an emotional need to play a crucial moment over (and probably over again)--if she knew she couldn't have him anyway? It's not inconceivable, but might it not be stronger if she could have had him but dismissed him? I think a few of her lines point to that. But your point is well taken. He definitely isn't up to par with his castmates lol. He did originally write the part of Hamilton for someone else but that person fell ill and Lin decided to play the part himself. When Lin retired his part of Hamilton the guy he originally wrote it for got to do his thing and took over after Lin
I find him capable, but he lacks the subtlety of a studied actor. My suspicion is that he is a musician first who is really good at rapping, and so his dialogue at times sounds sing-song. It's quite obvious to me in One Last Time when he's paired with Christopher Neal Jackson, who is a really good actor.
Interesting factoid, Clerene! Thanks for sharing that. I don't begrudge Lin for taking the part himself. It launched his own acting career, for sure. Everyone needs a boost! And I appreciate all his benevolence, so much good may have come of it.
Absolutely fantastic song and great choreo. Probably the best scene of the play. Also one of the least historically accurate ("We Know" and "Election of 1800" have significant accuracy problems too). On top of ignoring the existence of her 3 brothers, Angelica Schuyler married John Barker Church 3 years before she met Alexander Hamilton. There was certainly affection between the two, but Angelica didn't selflessly step aside for her sister. There was nothing to step aside from because she wasn't available to begin with. But I'm fairly certain that the idea behind including their very real affections for each other was to allude to Hamilton's potential for infidelity and, later, react on behalf of the audience during "The Reynolds Pamphlet." That becomes less effective without "Satisfied." This song is just a good reminder of what "Hamilton" is; an excellent play that is engrossing and entertaining but should in no way be mistaken for an accurate history lesson.

@@DayleSong No, that's not what I meant. I mean that having the video still playing and bumping it forward is jarring. The practice I've noticed is other RUclipsrs will pause the song and recording, find the next segment they want to talk about, and start the recording again. Otherwise it's jarring because it sounds like the record/CD skipped, the tape is being eaten, or the actors forgot their words and just jumped to the next part hoping no one would notice 😳... ya know...?
Going into it, Satisfied was definitely my favorite song. Now, I'm fascinated by "Wait for It". It's a brilliant look into Burr's mindset, motivations, and frustration.

@@DayleSong the lyrics were very touching "we'll bleed and fight for you, we'll make it right for you (...) we'll give the world to you" and the way it shows a break in both characters (Aaron Burr and Hamilton) who both appear to be more focused on work than on their wives. This song is also the only thing they actually have in common, without "ifs/buts".
Lastly the melody is very high yet soothing, paired with many string instruments and Leslie has a LOVELY higher register that is extremely soothing. The harmony between him and Lin at the end is just beautiful.
It may not be the song with a lot of historical facts/amazing rap or whatever, but you can feel the love, it's so pure and genuine.

I loved how you pointed out the fact that Alexander doesn't tell Angelica about his backstory but told Eliza about it in brief detail during helpless, but I wish you focused more on what that said about the characters--Angelica didn't need Alexander to tell her that he's "penniless" and "flying by the seat of his pants" and that he came from a low background. She figured all of that out just by him avoiding the subject with her and because they're so mentally in tune. Meanwhile, Eliza had to have Alexander tell her, and this shows later on in the musical where she's always wondering what's in his mind and wants him to "let her in". Wonderful analysis irregardless, this has to be my favorite reaction & review for Hamilton and I hope you do more!

There was an Angelica song/scene cut from the off broadway production that didn’t make it to broadway. It’s called Congratulations. You should look it up on RUclips and listen to it. It will give you a little more insight into the Angelica character. Loved your analysis of the Satisfied scene by the way. Please do more? Also my favorite song/scene is the Room Where it Happens but Satisfied is a very close second.

This scene was the point in the show that drew me in. I only watched through Helpless with my grandma, and I wasn't sure if I could make time to sit through the rest. The moment the ensemble said "rewind" and everything started spinning, I was into the scene. Then Renée Elise Goldsberry's performance blows it out of the water. I love the parallels between Helpless and Satisfied. Even if Angelica doesn't have a huge role to play for most of the story, this song kept me watching if only for the rewind sequence alone. That feels like the kind of thing only a movie can pull off, and yet they nailed it in a stage performance using a turntable and lights. It's brilliant.
my favourite thing about this scena and Angelica as a character is how HER great love story is that of her sisters, more specifically her love for Eliza. I think above all, her choosing to introduce Eliza and Alexander (in context of the show) is her picking her truest love, which is Eliza, over any potential satisfaction she might have felt if she kept Hamilton to herself and a part of me feels that while she used her mind more than her heart, the bringing together of her sister and Alexander was proof of how she also has quite a bit of heart because she does what she knows Eliza would do if Angelica had mentioned her attraction to him, which is to stand by and support the other even when it hurts, BECAUSE of her heart so they are quite similar in that Angelica lets her heart lead her when it comes to her sister.

The purpose of Angelica was to have someone who understood Alexander the best. When they wrote letters, she gave him opinions on how to deal with his political rivals, and it was shown that he trusted her as a confidante. It was also mentioned in Elizas final song that Angelica helped her organize and understand all of Hamilton’s writings (since she knew him best).
In my opinion, Renee gets the closest to the original broadway cast recording in the Hamilfilm.
Hi AJgames29! Renee is very strong, I agree. Studio singing or singing apart from doing the stage action produces a different result, most certainly. The Hamifilm was largely performed before a live audience and every night will feel different for a performer, so I can just imagine the pressure the cast must have felt to be at the top of their game while on camera.
I'd say Jasmine is also extremely close in Say No To This.
Why have Angelica as a character? This is my theory...Because up until the end of the musical were Eliza does come out as the hero of the story, she is as you described her, ruled by her heart, and even meek. I think Lin wanted to include a character who was a powerful, smart woman. A more modern version of how women behave now. Angelica is aware she is a woman and the limitations that brings her, but she is not going to be Satisfied with that status. She will give her opinion openly on things that are not in the preview of traditional female characters from the 1700s. From my understanding, the actual Angelica was like that too. And I for one appreciated that Lin included her instead of stopping at the meek, forgiving wife (turned superhero, yes, but not till the end) and the hussy.
Of course there's a double entendre! Also "set my heart aflame, every part aflame". That's one of the many things I love about Hamilton, the characters reveal their real human sexuality that we know existed behind the stuffy patrician language in the history books.

Both moments struck me similarly, and part of the point of the show as written is to rewrite those stodgy history books and view these people as having real human emotions and drive. To see them as people at all! The only reason it wasn't clear to me upon watching was that I thought the moment could have been acted with more intention towards the double entendre. So much goes by so fast when words fly at 400 wpm!

Hi vanash4! Thank you for sharing that. I also think that line stands out as a superb lyric! I'm not sure I've ever heard it used as an adjective before, and I don't find it elsewhere as such online. It's quite creative to condense the thought into a few words like that to produce a single image, especially when words fly by so fast! We see that Angelica takes notice of his intelligence, but *hunger pang* brings 2 ideas to mind: first, that he is poor and possibly thin and wan from hunger (not likely the actual case, but possible from where he starts out in the show); and second, that there is hunger in his soul--a burning desire to advance his station and dedicate his mind to the founding of this new nation. As an immigrant himself, I imagine his fervor to have been all the more passionate to contribute towards the country of his choice. Angelica, wanting to satisfy her own intellect and match minds with someone out there, latches onto this instantly.

I personally believe she’s a parallel to Alexander that helps him because he knows she’ll understand him. Because he needs someone in his life that understands the worlds he creates in his mind and Angelica unlike Eliza can truly understand that feeling. Shes also a folly to Elizas character. Angelica is all about mind and work and quick wit while Elizas the heart and family and patience. Throughout the musical she serves as Elizas and Alexander’s support system for there different needs while putting her own wants aside.
From a visual storytelling standpoint, Satisfied is as creative as anything put on stage. Musically, Burn and One More Time are stunning. Hard to choose a favorite.
One other brilliant thing that you only notice when you watch the musical with captions, the last lines in the scene are "He will never be satisfied. I will never be satisfied" As Hamilton walks away with Eliza he looks back at Angelica. So it sets up straight from there that he's not as happy in his marriage as he could, and the reason why he is infatuated with Angelica later and writes to her while she lives in London.
Also "he will never be satisfied" because his mind is restless and can't retire contently after achieving a great feat. That is what Eliza wanted for them. That after achieving independence he would just become a local businessman and forget about politics. But that was not his nature as Angelica quickly perceived. He's one of those individuals that works furiously until the day he dies

From what I understand, the idea for the Angelica-Alexander closeness stemmed from letters found between Angelica and Elizabeth, where. Angelica asks if she can borrow Alex for a night or two.

I'm biased because I love Renee Elise Goldsberry. I thought she brought down the house. Despite the fact that you point out that she is kind of dropped except for a couple of scenes here and there, Renee's performance really brought Angelica to life and left me wanting more than her just being some 3rd wheel or a romantic protagonist. I loved this song. The whole rewind concept and the astounding job the chorus/dancers did rewinding their movements was so clever. It was a standout scene for me. I honestly loved it more than Burn and definitely Helpless which someone else mentioned (that's partly because I really hate the higher key in which Eliza songs tended to go toward. It just grates me). Maybe I relate to Angelica more than Eliza even though I know Eliza's accomplishments were more impressive, I'm 'the oldest and wittiest in my family etc. Eliza was meh to me. lol I'm sitting here thinking hmm what does that mean. I'm not trying to take sides, just rambling my observations. That was an excellent review, btw. Thank you.
Hi Noel! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the characters. I enjoyed reading how you feel about it personally. It gives me a measure of how people are taking in the show. I neglected to commend Renee's powerful performance.. From the moment she appears onstage, you know exactly who Angelica is. More attention is given to Eliza, and though Angelica might have an entire musical written about her, Eliza's arc in this show is well scripted and helps us empathize with the tragedy of a flawed individual -- that is especially, how Hamilton affected those around him. It's a good moral tale, which Eliza helps tell. But I agree: Angelica was given a brilliantly effective scene with Satisfied and then short shrift the rest of the time. There just too much to cover in this story! Good thing they sing at 400 words a minute! Lol. Please subscribe. I'll do more coming up.

"May you..." comes at 2:53 (of this video) right before "Rewind!" and in the end she says what you quote above. She turns it around from a toast to a realization of her own story. As far as screen time, Angelica is featured at the beginning while Eliza finishes the show... they're opposite brain/heart and they balanced the show and Alexander... beautifully and with spectacular verve!
Hi Melissa. Thanks for your thoughts. I agree that there is an important balance struck between the women and Alexander. Both stories are told: that of forefathers and foremothers, as well. Yet, I find the time spent on Satisfied to be inordinately long for the story it tells. It develops the character of Angelica well, but then takes it nowhere throughout the rest of the show. My point is that the play could have progressed clearly without it, so I'm not sure why so much time was given to it. For me it's a matter of imbalance in the choosing of moments in the play. However, it's so well composed in and of itself that it warrants been seen.
@@DayleSong I imagine it's because it's playing out "never being satisfied" as the idealised version of Angelica and Alexander... when they bring Satisfied back after the Reynolds affair, she attacks him with the line "God, I hope you're satisfied". Meanwhile, Eliza comes out like a firecracker after this and even more after he dies. As a partially related aside, I think it's to shadow some people's automatic assumptions that the idealised couple would be Angelica and Alexander - conversations I've seen say they would have been a real power couple... I think the show is trying to tell us that they are TOO similar to be a couple. *BTW, I say "idealised" because, like any show, Hamilton plays with the actual timeline and people in the events: the sisters had brothers and I'm pretty sure the real Angelica was already married when Alexander and Eliza got together.
Hi Melissa, Yes, Angelica was married to John Church 3 years prior to meeting Hamilton, but there was a close correspondence between her and Alexander, and as Eliza states, Angelica is indeed buried near him. Miranda repeats certain words throughout the show turning their meanings around to suit the situation and emotional change, such as satisfied, helpless. burn, among others. Eliza does show herself to have great internal strength for all she endures. Her legacy is well represented here. It's appropriate that she ends the show, because it's as much her story as Alexander's, and she does spend the rest of her life promoting his legacy. It's unexpected, truly, and a welcome change to honoring only men in the history books.
@@DayleSong Two of my favourite script choices about the sisters are the "comma flirting" between Alexander and Angelica and the last words Alexander says to Eliza "Take your time" which she is able to do since the real Eliza lived for so long after Alexander was shot.

Man, you gotta react to Congratulations, it continues Angelica's story with Alexander a little bit, but it got cut from the Musical due to time restrictions.
Angelica comes back when the affair comes to light to support her sister & not Hamilton (blow to his ego) in The Reynolds Pamphlet. It's a reprise of how she knows her sister.
She illustrates how his witty use of words that served him in his climb to power positions has its limits when he is only using them to serve himself.
Thanks for mentioning that moment, Anitra! Yes, indeed, Angelica shows up and asserts her opinion strongly in keeping with her character and her fierce protection of her sister. However, that would have been a great moment to balance out the extended feature she has in Satisfied. It would have expanded her role and rounded out her place in the show. I understand her song that was cut ("Congratulations") did exactly that--excoriated him for the Reynolds Pamphlet (and some of its music was retained in that section) but I have yet to hear it. Angelica is my favourite female character in the play and Satisfied is in my top 5 favourite songs in the play. It's interesting to think of it being a scene rather than a song in musical theatre since Hamilton is pretty much a collection of scenes done in song.

This scene always gives me goosebumps every time. It is brilliant.
It does, Rowan, I agree! There is such heart in how she reflects on her own story. I wish her role was fleshed out more with the other song (that was cut from Act II) so we could fix her in the story more, but we still see from this who she is as a person and what she contributes to our understanding of Alexander and Eliza as they enter the show. Something in the back of my brain recalls that perhaps this scene was written early on in the creation of the show and set the tone for the rest. I'm not sure, but it would compute.

Yes, we are indeed talking about an historic personage, and as such we walk the line between the real history and the symbolism Hamilton as a character brings to the story being told by the musical. What the musical does really well is to bring a 3-dimensionality to Alexander Hamilton, even if not all the details are historically accurate. He was indeed killed in the dual and he did act as a catalyst in many people's lives as he lived and died. The writing here allows us to reach back in time and enter his story with compassion and empathy. I say "spoiler" because it is a rather well known detail that he dies. And we enter the show knowing that. So, "wink wink!"

Hi Kristine! I am so tickled that you mentioned this! Yes, indeed, I chose "goofy" musics intentionally. I love quirky stuff! And there is little else that satisfies me like French accordion music! 👨🎨
I...would strongly argue against the view of Angelica NOT holding any significance in the story other than this. Just like Hamilton became the only intellectual match for her to level with, she was someone who Hamilton could talk(write) to without having to worry about saying anything wrong. Thus you see the scenes with them communicating, even flirting through their letters. She is a significant individual to both Alexander and Eliza Hamilton, and the show is named Hamilton, and not by Alexander Hamilton the full name. It is crucial that we know this telling of Alexander's life is the dream of Eliza, also her dying wish. It's what she fought for decades to be told. And so, Angelica, a person dear to both protagonists (yes I would argue that Eliza is also the protagonist) has every right to be in the show.

Who is she in the play? Shes the woman that introduced him to his wife. Like youve stated, his life wouldve been so different if shed pursued him and thought about her happiness before her sisters.
Thanks for writing in, Vince! It makes for a more interesting play when we can feel the character's emotional choice being made and the regret they feel for a missed opportunity, as in this case. However, in reality, Angelica was already married at the time she met Hamilton, so there was no option but for Angelica to let him slip through her fingers. That historical fact couldn't be changed, even if her motivations are made up. It's also true that they felt affection towards one another evidenced in their letters, so it is a strong historical element to include in the overall story.

Honestly my favorite is (unpopular opinion maybe) Who lives who dies who tell your story, followed by Wait for It.
Angelica and Alexander are the same. She marries and goes away, but they maintain correspondence. They speak of getting their car one another and then another letter comes and they are hooked all over again in the song ‘Take A Break’. Angelica questions the placement of a comma in Alexander’s last letter “My dearest, Angelica…” and she comes home for a visit. She and Eliza try to convince him to go upstate. I always thought that he felt that he and Angelica were close to crossing the red line into a physical relationship. Their correspondence leads me to believe that they shared a romantic love that was wrapped up in political machinations and the like, but they would never be satisfied with keeping it chaste. I know this isn’t historically accurate, but by the plays standards it fits. He cheats on Eliza, and he cheats on Angelica too. Angelica pops up when Philip dies. According to Burr Eliza and Angelica were at Alexander’s side after the dual. According to Eliza, Angelica is buried close to Alexander, which makes me think that she is aware of their attraction. My two cents - when Alexander opened with you strike me as woman whose never been satisfied, the double entendres doesn’t strike me as anything other than something to use as cover by Angelica. She’s been seen, truly seen for the first time by a man of intellect. He says “you’re like me.” I’m sure that blew her mind, but alas they were indeed too much alike in what they needed from a match. When Angelica does marry, she says he’s dull but rich and no man could match Alexander’s wit. Then she’s carried away as she sets sail for England and Eliza slides into frame beside her husband, who she now has to herself.
This was one of my favorite songs and themes in the play. I think you could talk about the singing a but more, I think the lyrics speak for themselves.

I focus a lot on lyrics because they are the basis for interpretation, and understanding more behind the text changes how the voice produces "the color" of what you are singing--like a vocal reflex. I could indeed go into such aspects of singing more in the video itself and I will aim to do so when it pops out at me. One of the tough things about Hamilton is that the singing is not often lyrical. There's a lot of talk-singing (rap) and it moves so fast, the singing becomes more about stamina than production. Historically Angelica was already married by the time Alexander married her sister Eliza. It's my take that from the first moment we meet Angelica she is looking for someone who is intellectually stimulating because she was a New York socialite which would be very boring for an intellectual woman. She would be stuck at teas and sewing circles surrounded by woman who did little more then gossip about the latest scandal or fashion. She was looking for a more stimulating conversation to satisfy her intellectual curiosity. If she was in a normal marriage of the age her husband thought her place was to be in the home and society not to pursue intellectual issues. When she meets Alexander she finally meets someone on level with her and who respects her as an equal in mental capacity. They wrote each other throughout their lives. She gave him advice and he respected her insights. For a woman of the time who though brilliant was surrounded by people telling her she should be happy with brainless pursuits it would be addictive to have an outlet that allowed her to use her Brain. To me the term satisfied while it may have a double meaning its main meaning is that they each wish to satisfy their curiosity about the world and to make their mark. They will never be satisfied with anything less and until their dying day they will both feel that they hadn't done enough. She is seeing someone with the same need to learn and then use their knowledge but they are not destine to be a pair so neither will be fully satisfied as they could have done far more together than apart. Sorry for the ramble but that's what I think.
Hi, Katarina! Please feel free to ramble on this forum! It promotes discussion. What I'm getting from you is that she very well could have been married already in the musical as in life and that being satisfied is both impossible for them because they can't be a pair and more so because they are intellectually eternally curious minds that will never be finished in seeking out knowledge and mental stimulation. I like that slant on it. It doesn't ignore the reality of history. But I need to ponder on which makes for a stronger choice for the character. The intellectual part is pretty clear in both scenarios. But why would she need to rewind--which I take as an emotional need to play a crucial moment over (and probably over again)--if she knew she couldn't have him anyway? It's not inconceivable, but might it not be stronger if she could have had him but dismissed him? I think a few of her lines point to that. But your point is well taken. Hey would u please react to anything Lin Manuel Miranda. I just need reassurance of my suspicion that he's just a mediocre singer with a good vocal coach that makes the most of his range?
He definitely isn't up to par with his castmates lol. He did originally write the part of Hamilton for someone else but that person fell ill and Lin decided to play the part himself. When Lin retired his part of Hamilton the guy he originally wrote it for got to do his thing and took over after Lin

I find him capable, but he lacks the subtlety of a studied actor. My suspicion is that he is a musician first who is really good at rapping, and so his dialogue at times sounds sing-song. It's quite obvious to me in One Last Time when he's paired with Christopher Neal Jackson, who is a really good actor.
Interesting factoid, Clerene! Thanks for sharing that. I don't begrudge Lin for taking the part himself. It launched his own acting career, for sure. Everyone needs a boost! And I appreciate all his benevolence, so much good may have come of it.

Absolutely fantastic song and great choreo. Probably the best scene of the play.
Also one of the least historically accurate ("We Know" and "Election of 1800" have significant accuracy problems too). On top of ignoring the existence of her 3 brothers, Angelica Schuyler married John Barker Church 3 years before she met Alexander Hamilton. There was certainly affection between the two, but Angelica didn't selflessly step aside for her sister. There was nothing to step aside from because she wasn't available to begin with.
But I'm fairly certain that the idea behind including their very real affections for each other was to allude to Hamilton's potential for infidelity and, later, react on behalf of the audience during "The Reynolds Pamphlet." That becomes less effective without "Satisfied."
This song is just a good reminder of what "Hamilton" is; an excellent play that is engrossing and entertaining but should in no way be mistaken for an accurate history lesson.

@@DayleSong No, that's not what I meant. I mean that having the video still playing and bumping it forward is jarring. The practice I've noticed is other RUclipsrs will pause the song and recording, find the next segment they want to talk about, and start the recording again. Otherwise it's jarring because it sounds like the record/CD skipped, the tape is being eaten, or the actors forgot their words and just jumped to the next part hoping no one would notice 😳... ya know...?
