Hi Marc, thanks for stopping by again and watching the tutorial. Glad you liked the tune too! We’ve got a new video and EP coming out in two weeks too, so watch this space. 😀
@wehappyfewmusic I was like 20 or something and used it to record bands, I tracked stuff from track 8 backwards so I could use the large faders to mix and record on. I kinda still wish I had it. Definitely provided a foundation for my future career.
@@Scullbergo that workflow makes a lot of sense, I might try that. I couldn’t afford one of these back when they came out, so guess I’m making up for it now. 😀
@@wehappyfewmusic I bet. My recent buy a 424mkiii ended up having a bad Monitor level pot. Was the only thing wrong with an otherwise top condition machine. Will be in the shop a fair while as they wait for the part to come in on one of their bulk part orders.
@@wehappyfewmusic Thanks for the note. My 488 is still coming from Japan. He is a 100% seller on eBay, so I expect no problems. Paid a tad more, too. So, I'll let you know how it proceeds. Marc.
@@wehappyfewmusic Indeed. Thanks for paying attention. So, this is my fourth listen and I pick up new stuff every time. I think I said I'm 77, so it takes time to sink in. You're always helpful, so I really dig this stuff.
@@YY-bv3ik You’re welcome and I hope it helps you get up and running with your 488! 👍 I wiped tracks 5-7 by recording new music on them, but recording silence over the previous material would do the trick too.
@@mikepass4435 Many thanks and great to hear you found it useful! I kept it pretty simple for the transfer to my computer (no mix bus compression etc). I’d recommend allowing a fair bit of headroom when transferring to digital though and going for a highish sample rate though (I used 24bit 48khz). Also double check that you’ve got both channels balanced on your audio interface to keep the stereo imaging of your mix intact.
I'm curious, may I ask why you choose to use inputs 1 and 2 to record the drum machine to trax 1 and 2 instead of plugging into inputs 9-10, 11-12 which are stereo inputs. Thanks !
Hi there, partly by habit really but also so there’s the option of adding eq if required. The stereo inputs could be a good option though in some scenarios.👍
@@wehappyfewmusic interesting. I am just wondering what would happen if you bounced this with the pan in the middle, and then turned the pan of the new track to the left. In case you wanted to create a guitar track and then hard pan it left.
@ if you bounced a guitar with the pan in the middle to 2 new tracks, you could then pan the new track hard left if required. You’d be better off bouncing in mono though if the final track was going to be panned hard left in the end. You’d be wasting a track otherwise.
A PLEASURE TO WATCH YOU AGAIN. YOU KNOW YER SHIT. NICE TUNE TOO. SO THANKS AGAIN, MATE.

I had one of these, I loved it, I also used it a little differently to you.
Cool, they’re nice little machines to work on. What kinda stuff did you do with yours?

You're making me miss my 488 😭 Great video man!
Sorry man, at least you can fit the 414 on your desk though! 😀👌
Superb video man, you broke down and described all the stages of recording, monitoring and mixing so well, essential viewing!
Hey Robin, thanks very much for checking out the video and the positive vibes! 🙏🙌
Lovely stuff. Fine looking unit too.
Glad you enjoyed it, many thanks!
Thanks for posting this…very helpful!!
Cheers for watching and glad to hear it was useful!
I think I'll have to get me a 488 mkII now! 😊
Yeah, go for it! They’re nice machines. 👌🙌
Sounds good.
Do you know where I can get a copy of the complete manual?
@@svetkolisica1635 thanks! Yes I’ll search out the link and post it in the description.

Thanks.

Nice looking machine...looks very well looked after!
@@oinkooink Thanks, yes it’s a tidy looking machine and I’m delighted to have it serviced and back in the studio again.

@@The_Absurdistt Thank you, I had it repaired and serviced by Tetrakan in the UK. Here’s a link to his website tetrakansupermonobloc.home.blog/

@@wehappyfewmusic ahh, that makes perfect sense! Cheers
Can you explain why you have to use the tape cue like that instead of the faders?
The tape cue gives you a separate monitor mix and helps to prevent you from accidentally bouncing tracks together when overdubbing.
I also got one of these TASCAM 488 MKII but it needs to be repaired can you help me
I know a man who can. Tetrakan did an awesome job of repairing two of my units. Check out his channel (if you haven’t already). @Tetrakan
What was the point of turning the 3 tracks that was supposed to be bounced to the right?
That’s so it sends them all to the same bus so they can be bounced together on to track 8.
@ what would happen if you left the pan in the middle and then bounced?
@@nameless2340 The signal would be weaker if working on a mono track. It’d be fine if you’re doing a stereo bounce to two tracks though.

For a tutorial? I sold my 488 mk1 to get the mk2 but there are some similarities with the workflow.
