    “The name of God is being blasphemed among the gentiles because of you”
    Wow. This hit hard. Us believers bear a great deal of responsibility for the spiritual state of the world and I feel extremely guilty knowing I haven’t done everything in my power to spread the gospel and be a living example of what it is to follow Christ.

    God wants us to understand that when we understand and live by the law (His commands) we are simply taking on the fact that we live by Him and only Him. That when we live by Him we simply have duty to lead, teach to others hoping that our good deeds of the light will lead them to repentance. We’re not saved by our works, we cannot win people over. Your only fooling God than yourself. God knows your motive before you even commit. It’s just better to be honest. God looks at the heart.

    You said, "He is kind of hoping and longing that people would turn away from evil and come back to him." 12:18. This sounds like we have a wimpy God who is a victim of our whim. God is patient us but this means he is gracious, not one who is just cheering us on the sideline to see how far we can get, but One who know the end from the beginning.

    • @BranchTogether
      @BranchTogether  4 года назад +5

      Yes, He knows the end to the beginning and He can make anything he wants happen along the way. The nuances here are pretty complicated and we aren't sure anyone's theology quite nails it yet. Probably won't untill Jesus explains it to us. Because see, He also chooses to make us in his image, which means we are capable of some small amount of love ourselves. Love requires freewill. But the good thing is this theological discussion doesn't really impact the way Jesus calls us to live.

    • @trinawetzel2222
      @trinawetzel2222 4 года назад +4

      I've been contemplating your response and praying about if I should even respond back. You seem to want to be gracious in your response so I hope you can extend that attitude to this comment also. I believe the theological discussion you are referring does impact the way we live. If we come to God telling him that we choose to love Him out of our own free will as opposed to what the text says that God loves us first and that even while we were dead, in our sins, it is a matter of humility and also of assurance. Those will affect the way we live and present a loving God to the world. God knows that every inclination of our human hearts before salvation is nothing but evil. That is the choice the dead in spirit will choose every time. We are still responsible for that choice. I know this one thing; that if a person were to choose God over death, God will not reject him.

    • @BranchTogether
      @BranchTogether  4 года назад +5

      @@trinawetzel2222 Hi Trina. Pastor Darren here. You are correct that we want to be gracious and you feel we any anything other than that, please let us know. Frankly we care more about your growing in love for Jesus than we care about being right in any argument. This is why we don't typically engage on controversial issues unless there is a practical application for how to live. We aren't quite sure what specifically a Christian would do differently if he believed a Calvinist soteriology vs a Traditionalist soteriology. If anything, the reformed though might lead one to be less mission oriented at heart if not careful. You reference humility but our experience suggests that a reformed soteriology often leads to less humility not more. As far as assurance, yes perhaps there is a practical element there. When you say "the text says that God loves us first" people on both sides of the discussion all agree on this. The nuance is that for many of us, the feeling is that God first calls and we either answer or not. The Calvinist pulls on verses like that to make the core of their argument while the Traditionalist leans on verses like John 3:16 to make theirs. Christians much smarter than us have debated this for centuries and the only reason we even discuss it now is to encourage extremists on one side to temper their position. The Bible makes clear statements that seem to support both side, so all we can do - if we are really faithful - is to hold them in tension and just walk as faithfully as possible.

    • @trinawetzel2222
      @trinawetzel2222 4 года назад +1

      I am confused at how a doctrine of salvation that says we bring nothing of ourselves to the choice that God makes would bring anything but humility. When we know that we are dead in our sins and cannot choose right from wrong how can we give ourselves the credit for waking from our slumber?

    Paul said "Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead expose them" Ephesians 5:11.
    Is righteously "exposing evil deeds" the same as judgement? I am confused. Anyone with insight please help. I am praying for insight from God. Thanks, all glory to God.

      Telling people about what they're doing wrong isnt judgement, judgement is telling people Something You see wrong about them

    • @MrCedarguy
      @MrCedarguy 2 года назад

      @@raresdobrinean1583 I believe it could be helpful to consider a distinction here. There is a difference between allowing God's Word to define a person's deeds as sinful versus supposing that we are capable of judging the motives and the heart of another person. This distinction is also made by Jesus in the sermon portion recorded in Matthew 7. There are plenty of people who deliberately choose to engage in evil and use the first part of this chapter to say that Jesus said not to judge. What they won't acknowledge, however, is that Jesus in the same sermon as recorded later in the chapter speaks of our need to judge a person's fruits as being righteous or evil.
