    Looking for the best Linux distros for developers in 2025? Whether you’re coding your first project, managing servers at scale, or diving into AI and cloud-native workflows, choosing the right distribution can transform your productivity.
    The Linux landscape in 2025 has evolved dramatically. From rock-solid LTS releases that guarantee stability, to rolling-release distros that deliver the latest kernels, languages, and frameworks, developers now have more powerful choices than ever. Immutable operating systems are redefining reliability, AI is becoming a first-class citizen on Linux desktops, and containerized workflows are blurring the lines between local and cloud development.
    In this video, we cut through the noise to rank the Top 7 Linux distros for software developers in 2025 - highlighting the strengths, weaknesses, and unique features that matter most for coding, DevOps, AI/ML, and beyond. You’ll discover which distros are perfect for beginners, which ones cater to advanced power users, and which are shaping the future of development environments.
    We also break down major trends like:
    Why immutable Linux distros (NixOS, Fedora Atomic) are a game-changer for reproducibility
    How AI is being integrated into Linux itself, not just as a workload
    The rise of the cloud-native desktop, where containers and Toolbx/Distrobox are redefining workflows
    By the end, you’ll know exactly which Linux distro is best for your development workflow in 2025 - whether you’re writing Python, building with C++, training AI models, running Kubernetes clusters, or just getting started with programming.
    Who is this for?
    Developers choosing a distro for Python, Java, C++, or web development
    AI/ML engineers looking for the best Linux for CUDA, PyTorch, TensorFlow
    DevOps & cloud-native specialists exploring Fedora, NixOS, and containers
    Beginners who want a stable, beginner-friendly Linux distro.

    I know what course I would pay for.. Give us an "Arch Linux" from scratch install, then install all the services most people would use like GIT, SAMBA, PHOTO etc.. I have installed Arch, from scratch and ran into ALL sorts of things that I just didn't know to install. Like Sound drivers, Photo viewers, Networking tools, team viewer for the working class etc. Then to add to that, setting up a Window Manager like Qtile, I3WM or AWESOME.. These things I would rather watch a nice course on (I mean FULL arch style) adding, ricing etc. But give it to the Arch people.. I know some may think Arch users are too smart to need that, but I bet a LOT of us addicted, but short on time users would love it. I'm 60+ and not retired, so time is still valuable and I'm willing to pay to learn.. Just a thought.

    What you think about deepin os?

    • @OverdrivePill
      @OverdrivePill 6 months ago +1

      I've used deepin for a short time when it first was published. At the time it was very pretty but for sure needed some polishing. From what I heard the new "AI OS" push has turned a lot of people off of it. Coming from China also pushed some people away from it for different reasons. To be fair I haven't used it in a long time now, but it used to be nice and sleek for being so new.

      I used Fedora Silverblue for a while (not Workstation). Silverblue is both rock solid and cutting edge. I now use Fedora Kinoite, which is also a Fedora Atomic variant. It uses KDE Plasma for its desktop environment. Silverblue uses Gnome. I've toyed with other distros based on Debian, Ubuntu, Arch, and openSuse. But I Fedora Atomic works best for me.

    • @viacheslavspitsyn2995
      @viacheslavspitsyn2995 6 months ago

      @papillrm What is better in Fedora than in OpenSuse?

    • @papillrm
      @papillrm 6 months ago

      @viacheslavspitsyn2995 OpenSuse is roughly on par with Fedora Workstation. But openSuse doesn't yet offer an Atomic KDE. OpenSuse Kalpa is currently in alpha. When the stable release of Kalpa becomes available, I'm likely to try it. The only other distro on my radar is HeliumOS, which is based on Fedora via AlmaLinux.

  • @denislorit
    @denislorit 6 months ago +13

    fedora has problems with wifi, video codecs, etc., and is highly unstable. Arch has problems with maintenance, especially with pacnew files, which require a good knowledge of the arch system, which 99% of people don't know. So, stick to debian, mint, ubuntu. period.

      I agree. I used fedora in the 2010s. Horrible distro. Half my time used to set up the desktop and then within a few months the updates stop. Uninstall some unwanted packages in yum and something we use will break. I switched to Ubuntu and could focus on my actual work. Even the Nvidia driver installation was easier with Ubuntu.

    For me Bazzite DX is the best. It's clean its beautiful, it's Silverblue but with graphic support and gaming support built in.
    I've switched to it permanently now and haven't touched Windows since I installed and setup. Bazzite. I even prefer it over my MacBook now in most cases.
    My app stack now:
    OS - Bazzite
    Browser - Vivaldi
    Office Package - Only Office
    Password Manager - ProtonPass
    OS - MacOS
    Browser - Arc
    Office Package - Microsoft 364
    Password Manager - ProtonPass
    I love my setup now. I hated what Windows became as of late. Now with Bazzite replacing Windows and all the Windows software that I've been using, I've realised that I have been using crappy software all this time!

      @MayankParashar-j4d i would prefer cachy to just anyone...but its just not reliable....most of the developers want something reliable...arch tends to break some gnome extensions, ( yes it has snapshots, but a normal developer wont bother external stuff other than just coding most of the time) same goes for kde too, debian is a great choice for them and reliable

    contrary to what you mentioned, one should avoid using nix env. Instead one must use flakes for strict version control, and flakes give the power to use the latest packages that is ultra bleeding edge even newer than that of Arch....I use both Arch based (cachyos) and Nixos on ultra bleeding edge (cachyos kernels for NIXOS) baked specially to deal with our ML pipelines BTW.....so to other users, out there thinking of using NIX try to use flakes in place of nix env.......that way you have a nix that is ultra bleeding edge with Titanium solid heart (kernel) that never breaks no matter what......and fully agree with you on that NIX=dev.....no other system not even using dockers can match the convenience that NIXOS offers to devs....
