I personally have it coming in from the water hose which is ultimately coming from my well. If it was a off grid situation then ideally would be the same from a well or a water tank or near by creek/stream etc where you can pump the water in from.
I would recommend this specific model for car camping. This is a very large unit. This is more of a stationary unit in my opinion. They do sell smaller units which would do much better for a mobile set up
