- Before flying a newly built experimental homebuilt aircraft, the builder must have his aircraft inspected by either the FAA or a DAR (Designated Airworthiness Representative ). Many times the FAA is too busy or unavailable to perform these inspections, so we must turn to a DAR to perform the service. In this video we interview a DAR who explains how a DAR functions in this process and what to expect during the inspection. Just looked at an ad for homebuilt.airplane. Ad said needs DAR or FAA inspection. Not knowing difference called FAA and spoke to person with real attitude. When asking about what to expect, what needed to be inspected all he would say was "how should I know I haven't seen the plane". Thanked him for being such a congenial public servant and hung up. Called owner of plane and spoke to him about this inspection and episode with FAA Representative. First question the owner asked was which office I called. Upon telling him his response was and I quote. "They are so busy over there sitting on their as**=es they don't have time to work."
Dealing with any federal agency is a chore. I could say more but will probably get censored.

Wow, another cost to tack on when building an airplane. If the FAA doesn't have the time to do it, then it must not be that important to them. Why make us pay for inspections? As homebuilders, I think Americans should stop opening their pocketbooks every time a government agency wants to protect us from ourselves. At least ultralights are still out of their crosshairs ... for now.

When I hired a DAR I made it clear it was his job to make sure the forms package was correct. I can follow the AC for free but dealing with the FAA is what I hired him for. As for physical inspection as long as you got your nuts on right, you should be ok.
If this guy truly cared about general aviation he'd do inspections for $100.
He seems to only care about his ego and money.

You can thank the EAA for doing nothing also thank AOPA. I droped my subscription to both, that helped pay, 10yrs x. Subscription rate = almost full payment for inspection.
What to expect from your DAR?? An extremely high charge for his/her services!

With the new geographical expansion, does the DAR work with the builders local FSDO/MIDO or does he have to go through his FSDO/MIDO. I live in southeast Virginia. My DAR was from Maryland and he was under the Cumberland Gap MIDO in Pennsylvania, I had to work with them instead of my local Richmond FSDO. Other experimental aircraft at our airport have worked with a different DAR from Virginia and gone through the Richmond FSDO and had a much better experience. My DAR was great but his MIDO boss was, shall we say, less than stellar. (real comment withheld)

HomebuiltHELP......Does the FAA or DAR inspection also cover ultralights (103) aircraft?
No inspection needed for part 103 ultralights
@@chasejohnson1122 So if no inspection is needed for part 103, what is stopping anyone from being over the 254lbs, on board fuel limits, vne, etc.? Not being an ass, just asking for clarification?

Now that was one of the most helpful videos yet. It would be awesome to have someone like you as a nieghbor. In my neck of the woods it seems everyone just wants to BBQ and drink beer. Nobody is interested in building.
