Many moons ago, 43 to be exact,I trained to be a jockey. After 2 years and 6 months before my first ride I had a bad accident working a horse one morning.I never got to ride that first race and was content to be a groom/exercise rider. I'm 62 now and still work and train horses. I would have loved to have not gotten broke up but that's life.
jaroufa1 I am the same age and very broken up but have recently started my horse. He's pretty far from even green broke but very forward and a joy to be up on. I guess life after 60 isn't that bad even when your body doesn't work that well anymore. I have a fast horse under me and that's all it takes to keep me happy.
Sorry you never got to ride in races. I am 57 now, I went to a different jockey school when Chris was still riding races. He came to visit us and talked to us, 100% class. Never surprised me at all when he did this in his retirement. I was a top student at the school and went on to ride for a few years, but doing the weight was tough for my build. I never hit the big time, but I did it and have great memories from that time in my life.
My late brother was a premiership winning jockey in Australia in the 1960s & friends often asked him for tips. His answer was that if he had any idea what was going to win he wouldn't be getting up at 4 am in the middle of winter to work the horses, then travel to a race meeting to ride some crazy horses that might have a heart attack or break a leg leaving you on the ground waiting for the horses to jump over you. Many accidents happen on the training track while working the horses so you rarely hear about them. One of the best female jockeys in Australia was Michelle Payne who won the 2015 Melbourne Cup, the first woman to win in its 155 year history. Despite this fame, she suffered many injuries during her career including a fractured skull, bruised brain, fractured wrist, torn pancreas etc. Being a jockey isn't all about mounting a horse in pretty colours on race day before a cheering crowd, it is a very dangerous occupation. I saw a young jockey die in the mounting yard when a horse behind him gave him both barrels to the back of the head & his helmet didn't save him. If you still choose this career, good luck and do you have any sure thing tips? Another tip is don't pick a fist fight with a jockey. They might be small, but like lightweight boxers, they are incredibly fit athletes & pack a punch.
Chris is pure class. There's not a former jock alive whom I have more respect for. His ride aboard Touch Gold to steal Silver Charm's Triple Crown bid was the stuff of pure genius. Living legend.

Behind the romanticized façade of thoroughbred horse racing is a world of injuries, drug abuse, gruesome breakdowns, and slaughter. While Eight Belles' death was one very public tragedy, three horses die or are killed after suffering catastrophic injuries during races on tracks across America every single day. This doesn't include the horses who break down during warm-ups or who die from illnesses caused by overwork, travel, and stress.
I love riding horses they are the best and I wont to be a jockey some day it would be awesome. I love going fast and going to the race track and watching races. My neighbor has race horses and he has tough me some stuff. it is awesome. my dream is to become a jockey.

TBH the standard of rider displayed in above video are nowhere near the standard required to safely ride in races, the step from work rider to race riding is significant and I would suspect they would even struggle to be in control in a piece of work. Having said that they are on the right path and I would imagine in the coming years they might make it to the track. Here in Ireland we have produced a large proportion of world-class jockey. Our success in doing so is attributed to the framework in place for kids who want to be jockeys. Long before these kids apply for a licence they have been pony racing (watch video “Omey Island Beach Pony Racing” for a little insight) and are accustomed with what to expect in the coming years. Most kids who are serious will attend a 42 week course at our racing school the Racing Academy and Centre of Education (google it) and I don’t think it costs 27000 (I think you may even get a grant to attend but I stand to be corrected).
1111rory Well, Ireland does have some reasonable jockeys, I suppose..and it does produce a good horse or two ;)..joking aside, I agree, Ireland is steeped in horses and riding. England is as well, but the Irish horses are top class.
Sounds odd. A jockey school for kids. The problem with wanting to be a jockey when you are a kid is that you don't yet know if you will stay under 5 feet tall when you are an adult and all those riding lessons may become useless.
Kudos Out To Chris, You're doing a great job with NARA!! ! So nice to see how dedicated McCarron has remained to the racing industry! Nice way to give back to the sport where he'd earned such great successes! Chase Roberts, without ever having had any experience in the irons.. Appears to have a nice seat on a horse. Oh my god people need to get a fucking grip in the comments saying "it's cruel " those horses get treated like gods and anyone that works in the racing industry will know this....

Silkenbutterfly7 don’t get your self into that. Choose a different aspect of riding. ***** Actually it's the sound that does it, also, i agree that it hurt them. however 4 years ago they changed the crop to one that no longer hurts, the crop that doesn't hurt works just as well. Also how did you brake them and how long ago?
id love to be a jockey i have ridden my whole life but my school wont let me have days of school to go to the british jockey school and it is so unfair. Not only that my parents probably wouldnt let me anyway. =)
Racing has it's dangers for jockeys. I've personally seen ugly spills at the races. In the end they'll be in the business for themselves. And in the business they learn what the ganeral public don't know. That racing is made of two parts: PROFITCAPPING and HANDICAPPING. At google.com you can learn much more. Handicapping predicts order of finish and horse(s) that'll win. Profitcapping predicts money to be made in months. Jockeys have many reasons for riding.
I do eventing I know it is not as intense as racing but when u fall of a horse it is barely ever the rider that gets mad at the horse or the rider that is wary it's the parents
"alexarder202" You are not alone. Most people don't get to do what they want to do whether it is being a Jockey, or anything else. Jockeys are considered athletes and it is very hard to become a competitive-level athlete whether it is weightlifting, triathlete, swimmer , tennis player, golfer etc etc. Most just have to settle to participate for fun and be a weekend athlete. Just ride the merry-go -round
this guy that doesnt like horses but is a Jokkey. Just WHUT? Hes parents have a lot of money and he kinda would try to ride, and now he is on the best school hor Jockeys?? I think its stupid as fuck. U should like horses first, than u realise ur good at this and u start training more. NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND. -.-
Ugggh "for the love of horses" horse racing is very dangerous for the horse as well. They could easily break a leg and have to be euthanized, not to mention the unhealthy amount of steroids and drugs they feed their horses
+unicornpoop09876 cause they are dumbass, open your eyes and see the world's true face under the mask, what lies below is a monster waiting to be released.
Athena Wright PUERTO RICO'S jockey school is totally free of charge and a lot of the best riders in the world graduate from there. including that jockey at 7:20 Julio Garcia the best!
"Grew up with her heart set on this. I love horses, I love riding" except all those horses your riding will probably die and go to slaughter to be shot.
To be fair - all horses end up like that in the end. Dead. Even the cuuuuute little ponies who live up to 30 years. They die too and usually they're shot too. It's just mercy to put and old aching horse down... And for a horse of that breed, even 15 is old. Same goes for Warmblood trotters, they're "grandpas" and "grandmas" at the age of 15-17. Ponies or finnish horse etc can live up to 30 years and still look good as new.
Many moons ago, 43 to be exact,I trained to be a jockey.
I rate horses in apercentage of fitness. thanks
I have yet to see a jockey on whom it doesn't apply.
But the horses carry 133 pounds so it’s better if the person weighs more so they use less weights in the saddle
i love my horse
its so beutiful races
I do eventing I know it is not as intense as racing but when u fall of a horse it is barely ever the rider that gets mad at the horse or the rider that is wary it's the parents
Poor horse that got slapped
My dream is to become a jockey but I can't become it :(
why?
+JayFeather FanLover where?
"alexarder202" You are not alone. Most people don't get to do what they want to do whether it is being a Jockey, or anything else. Jockeys are considered athletes and it is very hard to become a competitive-level athlete whether it is weightlifting, triathlete, swimmer , tennis player, golfer etc etc.
Most just have to settle to participate for fun and be a weekend athlete. Just ride the merry-go -round
alexarder202 im an aspiring jockey, but im lucky enough to have raced my pony, rode and worked with racehorses
Love horses.
this guy that doesnt like horses but is a Jokkey. Just WHUT? Hes parents have a lot of money and he kinda would try to ride, and now he is on the best school hor Jockeys?? I think its stupid as fuck. U should like horses first, than u realise ur good at this and u start training more. NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND. -.-
Ikr, if you're only love is the speed, go for cars not horses. Smh -_-
It actually does not matter. Jockeys who "love" horses still mistreat them . It is the culture of being a jockey.
You know who else risks their life? The fucking horses that are constantly abused and used for money
Well I know that job I will never be able to do.
I don't care about the jockeys I just care about the horses imagine the stress the horses go through
I race every day
I love horse riding my horse is. thorobread name is chetak
I would love to be a jockey but I'm already to tall >.
Tough. Maybe become a basketball player
Me to but at the doctor last week I weighed 288
And most of the paralyzed jockeys comes from his school
It's not plain wrong the horse like doing this
they are better off coming to europe and learning while being paid, also the way horses are trained they rarely break down.
The percentage of female to male jockeys in America must be embarrassing to all involved in racing.
Jockeys choose, horses do not. These poor horses never consented to having losers gambling on their lives.
most dangerous sport lol... Try the prca circuit/pbr.
Ugggh "for the love of horses" horse racing is very dangerous for the horse as well. They could easily break a leg and have to be euthanized, not to mention the unhealthy amount of steroids and drugs they feed their horses
Laura Bernert you say that like all racehorses are fed steroids and drugs
+unicornpoop09876 Yeah cause they are... •_•
+unicornpoop09876 cause they are dumbass, open your eyes and see the world's true face under the mask, what lies below is a monster waiting to be released.
I can’t even begin to explain how wrong you are
it costs 27000 $idont have yhat money
Athena Wright PUERTO RICO'S jockey school is totally free of charge and a lot of the best riders in the world graduate from there. including that jockey at 7:20 Julio Garcia the best!
Keeping the weight to a certain limits is unhealthy in my book screw that shit. And the job is dangerous.
I think Chase Roberts is the smartest guy ever. Besides, "Chase" is an awesome name for any sort of racer!
That is ridiculous putting a boy who has never ridden a horse on a RACING horse
For once it pays to be short
"Grew up with her heart set on this. I love horses, I love riding" except all those horses your riding will probably die and go to slaughter to be shot.
PITBULLS 4 LIFE you know NOTHING that NEVER happens in the racing industry
To be fair - all horses end up like that in the end. Dead. Even the cuuuuute little ponies who live up to 30 years. They die too and usually they're shot too. It's just mercy to put and old aching horse down... And for a horse of that breed, even 15 is old. Same goes for Warmblood trotters, they're "grandpas" and "grandmas" at the age of 15-17. Ponies or finnish horse etc can live up to 30 years and still look good as new.
Wow.
heyman.
Awesome
