what else is there to understand? I understood the movie only now, and im tamil. (honestly, i felt it was over the top)
@@ashwinleonard There were over the op scenes here and there. (Mostly due to the over the top acting of the actor. Dhanush would've done this role justice).
But as a whole the movie is really well made. It gets it point across so subtly.

The old man thinks he is on a holy mission to maintain the Caste hierarchy and parents of those kids cannot go to police so they approach the old man to do that dirty work.
You guys have missed the scene where the old man shaves the head of a girl.
The old man in the bus first invites Pariyerum to sit next to him but when he realizes that Pariyerum might be from a lower caste he just stands up and leave.
The Dog's funeral shows how these village people treat those animals as their own family members.
The Girl's character is 100% genuine, rich upper caste girls are always shielded from all these realities.
She was not even ragged, teachers will not dare to bully her, she will realise all these realities when she gets forcibly married off and in many cases they accept it.
The songs drives the story along, the song about their friendship shows how years passing by in college. In the song he gets better in English, Jo keeps asking the teacher to check pariyerum's notes, the casteist prinicipal is changed, you see the student unions brawling in the campus and Jo is the reason why he stays away from those student unions.
You can clearly see in a scene where is about to do a sit in protest with the unions but she drags him away.
And it seems the song about his frustration, the blue color represents the color of Amdebkar's political party.
When Archara says they need a voice at the police station where the village head gets slapped, studying LAW is that voice.
The scene where teacher bullies about his writing, Kathir's outburst towards the castiest teacher is because
the teacher abused him by saying people who get college Seats using Qoutas (Reservations) cannot study.
The girl's cousin character talks about the patriarchy.
There are some good upper caste people like the girl's father who do not want his family to get dragged into these caste politics
but have no choice because his relatives won't let him and he is afraid to go against his own caste fearing they might kill his daughter
for falling in love with a lower caste person.
There are cross dressed actors like Pariyerum's father, it is sought of a tradition but those people are all treated baldly in the society.
They have been forced to live on the outskirts of the village.
The actor who played Pariyerum's father is a cross dressed actor in real life.
The reason he did not kill them because if he did,
he would be jailed for sure and can never become a Lawyer.
The upper caste guys want to portray Pariyerum as a pervert, drunk, not good at studies and a troublemaker
yet Pariyerum keeps holding his ground
He can seek help from College student unions but it will blow up this issue causing more hindrance to his studies.
Coming to his friend Yogi Babu, he is from the upper caste, his dad is in a high government position,
even though he does not believe in casteism, he likes to enjoy his privilege.
He is not shown like he is raising any voice against this bullying.
He was not a coward, he was angry at her for inviting him alone to the wedding.
imagine being invited to a party and being humiliated like that
and then that the same person walks up to you like hey what's wrong.
You do not see any romantic advances from Pariyerum like in other romantic movies.
He talks about the angels in his life like the teachers, the exam invigilator who helped him cheat and
obviously Jo who helped him in his studies.
The two tea cups not so long ago,
lower castes and upper castes were served tea in separate cups at these tea shops.
you can see that in the movie in Naan Yaar song.
Movie is set in the 1990s so no cellphones.
Jaby if you want Django type ending watch KARNAN by the same director Mari Selvaraj.

the old man character's setup might seem long from a cinematic point of view but for native tamilnadu people we have seen several incidents in newspaper that young school children and college youths died due to some accidents or drowned it just makes chills in our mind that how many of them would have been killed like this and made it look like an accident. And you got it wrong the old man killed himself that he feels ashamed to be forgived by someone from a lower caste that shows his hatred even in his death
About the grandpa character - he just killing people who loves from high caste to low caste to maintain the dominance of the high caste people and make it look like suicides.
One bus scene - when the grand pa character gives a seat to him to sit by and after knowing the pariyan is low caste from some village he'll decide to stand alone rather than sitting beside him.
About climax- black tea glass refers to low caste (pariyerum perumal) in quantity wise also very low and in other hand the tea glass with high quantity refers to heroines dad (With still believing in caste dominance) and in middle the flower denotes the heroine with love without any discrimination.
This Movie is cult classic about the Casteism of india and it shows real happened and happening events to the low caste and their discrimination.
Pariyerum perumal has turned a good and hit movie in all centree and got it's appreciation ✨
This movie opened my eyes to castism, being a foreign Indian. I couldn't understand the issues around castes till I saw this movie. It zoomed down to even the differentiation in different tea glasses for respective castes. It shook me. Now I'm kind of aware the struggles faced by the lower castes and it angers me how this is even present in this current day and age.

Achara is so sharp. She grasps so quickly and on point.
The cups at the end are not representing an ideal world. It’s depicting reality. The father has the lighter colored tea. He leaves more of it in the cup bc of his privilege. The guy gets the darker colored tea and almost finished it. There’s so much symbolism you should check some videos out dissecting it.
1. I think knowing about Dr. B. R. Ambedkar would have helped you understand the subtleties in this film
2. When being a bigger person is the only option then that’s survival. That’s what the movie tried show
3. “Turning the other cheek” - at a meta level look at the difference between Indian freedom struggle and other ones (for example French, American). I feel it’s more ingrained in our culture to prefer the non violent path probably 🤷♂️
4. The movie karnan by the same director is closer to django unchained. However I liked this one more because of how close it’s to the reality
I loved your reactions and specially the confusion you experienced - that adds weight to the directors choices in the film because a privileged person not always knows the depth of problems the unprivileged have to go through (just like the female character in the film, or the “good” Brits in pre-independent India, or many of us about many things in the world)

I now realise how launguage plays an important role and subtitles doesn't really matter. We were all in tears when we watched it but jaby is laughing out loud like it's a comedy film.
Jaby is American pov oriented dumb. Try to be cinema wizard, when he knw nthing abt the cruelty and reality of society.
He didn't destroy those who harmed him because caste system won't end by killing one person but by killing a philosophy. That is the point the film-maker is trying to make. He explained it in several interviews that he has an ideological vision.
Dad character is not a transgender or gay, he's professional is dancing like a lady (Karagaatam)
Mf. Dad is trans and he has no option to change. He literally an girl which born in male body
I think the reason that he did not tell anyone about what happened, was that he felt he could never put them into words and do justice to his experience. When I watched this movie for the first time, I remember the scene where Jo gets angry at him at first for not coming and she kept asking him why, and I was thinking- "How can he phrase that pain, and shock and humiliation?" What he suffered in a span of 2 minutes(it was a sudden attack), was an out of the world trauma. And it was a surprise attack. 1 minute he was talking calmly and happily and everything changed in a second. He may never be able to speak of it and convey exactly what he felt(and continue to feel).
Also, would she believe that her father and cousins did that? She idolises her dad and Pari knows it.
This was my interpretation.

what is the comprehension of the movie?
Jaby the protagonist being like that is director's way of standing upto things in a non violent manner. He doesn't want to fight for the girl or rights its just he wants to be left alone with what he wants to study. The ultimate aim of his as in the title is he wants to be a lawyer which means abiding the law and being a rightful person. Also the principal told the protagonist that he was tortured like a dog and all he did was study like a freak and let the people realise what he is capable of. That's why he always wanted to get away from all the tension. It was him saying"leave me alone. I j ust want to become a lawyer and help my people". If you think he should have had his rage come out violently watch karnan the director's next work after this, where the protagonist fights back the casteism very violently
The girl seems to be unbelievably naive, since the way parents here in Indian Villages bring up their daughters are in a way so conservative, that they are least exposed to the outer world and happenings.

Hey guys! Loved the reaction! Just a couple of pointers that might help explain things a lil better:
1. Jo is naive. She really doesn’t know what is going on with her family and their caste obsession. In an interview, the director said that Jo represents the naïveté of the average person in real life. The general population is so unaware of how caste and class affects the people and the world around them. They played up jo’s(the world’s) naïveté so much to show how Pariyan (the oppressed) are affected by caste and yet no one notices or acknowledges it. Pariyan even feels the need to shield her from noticing the oppression so that she doesn’t have to come to the realization that world isn’t as nice as she thought it was. This again represents another undue burden the oppressed bear.
2. The old man being brought up again and again serves as a reminder of how caste is actually the driving point behind a lot of crimes, but it’s not portrayed that way in media. It’s a scary reminder that murders and suicides of these young people may not be random or isolated incidents
3. They don’t call the police at the end because the police are not on the side of the oppressed. This is an interesting parallel of caste to the race based situations we see with the cops in America. If you remember in the first half, the main reason pariyan wants to be a lawyer is because some of his people get unfairly blamed, detained, and disrespected by the police for a crime they didn’t do.

You are right but you left it incomplete. There weren't just fishes in the pond, there were few dangerous sharks too who helped the British finish off the fishes.

The innocent naive girl is a reference to / personification of many of us who don’t know what’s happening around in terms of caste atrocities, we are nice and well motivated but we are mostly completely unaware of the pains n reality. You’re supposed to be frustrated by that character, that’s fine n intended. :)

I dont think you both understand the essense of the movie. But thats understandable as its hard to grasp the nuisance unless you really understand the casteism issue in India. Alas , the upper caste Indians wouldnt really understand these as they are privileged enough to be naive or never be affected by casteism.

Old guy stands up from his seat when hero said his village name. Cause from village names they ll find his caste. Old guy now stands up cause he can't even sit equally to hero as old guy is higher caste and he thinks he is above hero.

Let me tell the exact reason why the hero doesn't tell her what happened to him at the marriage. If he did tell her, the very next second the girl would oppose her family and her family would even go to such an extent to kill her, just to ensure she doesn't marry the hero or live with him. Obviously the hero doesn't want that to happen, because he loves her too. That's what the old man has been doing the whole time, honour killing. Those scenes were not unnecessary, those were the roots of the movie!
This is one of the best movie where the music breaks are good. I understand we should know the background better to see that.
1. The dog song is sung with the furneral of dog. Dogs dont easily get funeral. As it was killed and for caste reason it was there.
2. Jo and Pari's college song. Its a montage song show around their 3 years of college. Jo falls in love with him and also the issue in college . Not very happy but law college has caste issues going.
VIRUMANDI is a masterpiece that will portray the caste power games affecting the village societies and also brings a discussion on capital punishment.
KAMAL HASSAN wrote, directed and plays the character VIRUMANDI.
While I think the ideas that kamal wanted to convey in Virumaandi was commendable and respectable.....unfortunately he made a long and boring movie....there was so much fat that it could've been trimmed to keep the story engaging

As a North Indian....genuine question. Is the caste system this prevalent in the South? I know of this culture in places like Haryana in the north for sure and experienced it first hand. But Im kinda surprised to know that is exists strongly in the South too. At least that is what this movie suggests and is my only reference point. I have lived in the South and most ppl thought I was a Brahmin because of my light skin(I'm actually Khatri and I think it should not matter at all in the first place) so I never saw the DARK side of casteism as depicted here....
Unfortunately, caste discrimination and caste based violence is still very prevalent in all 5 south indian states.

Violence may not be as prevalent as I have noticed in some parts of TN but discrimination is still definitely there.
This movie is perfect in many ways and if you note the cinematography and the simplicity of the story, I think this movie is Oscar worthy(my opinion). The plot of the story is much more comprehensible to the people of Tamil Nadu because of frequent conflicts, murders and in some cases, honor killings up until 2010. It actually entirely about the caste differences in each and every case. The protagonist is regarded the lower caste and always struggles to do what he wishes to (study peacefully, not enter some territories, being a friend to a girl, etc). The girl's father is regarded of higher caste and they don't hesitate to do wrong things just to show they have power and protect their honor, even to an extent to attempt murder). The old man (the killer) is hired to kill only the specific couples who are from different castes and either the boy's or girl's family hires him (mostly guy's).
It is much more relatable to people in Tamil Nadu because we frequently hear from such cases of conflict between castes until 2010. Still happens, but not much and mostly uneducated and rural people do it because of unawareness and are raised to protect their cast's honor. There are much more hidden details and symbols some even we missed. I wish you guys understood and felt the crux of the story more.
I recommend you see Paava Kadhaigal on Netflix. Its an anthology of stories similar to this movie's crux, but it is much more dark, yet realistic and you understand as to more why people do such stuff.
Also, the girl being naive is realistic from our stand point. Rural girls like her are actually more like her if she grew up in this certain way. And the reason he didn't say anything because it would elevate the situation for the worse. She would have fought with her father like she did later in the film and the father wouldn't hesitate to pull more dangerous card on him and hurt him. The last thing he wanted was a caste-based gangwar between villages. He was trying to avoid that. But later, the situation got worse anyway but he developed the courage tp handle it perfectly.
Jaby, it will be nice see your reaction to movies like MASTER, VADA CHENNAI, ASURAN........ etc.

The final meaning of the last shot according to me is there are 2 glasses which represents 2 seperate classes/caste and the flower represents the girl who make them coexist with each other.
Commenting on 22:10 - The setting of this film is assumed as 90s this happened in past where girls from upper class & especially from village are usually simple people and naive.
Also in India if you are still studying towards getting a particular degree it is common to put a bar on top which means you are in the process of getting a degree. It is also used in Britain.

So true, I was literally thinking that. Thought more of the privilege stand point as well, since jaby thinks he has a chance to kill and get away with just legal repercussions. But if pariyan did the same thing, his entire family would have been killed. It would have been a huge riot and a society fight. His entire life would have been over, they would have used that one incident and label all lower caste people as aggressive and rowdy. It would have beaten the entire purpose. A privileged man has enough privilege to commit a crime and get away with just the name of being a criminal. If someone who is underprivileged does it, their entire community would be blamed. This not only applies to caste.
The last points that you said about Djano Unchained is very true, In that case you should definitely watch Karnan

You guys didn't get the importance of the caste system and how it works at all. The message you got from it isn't what the movie is about either. I have a hard time believing that Jaby believes higher caste kids understands it when white kids in America doesn't understand racism. For really understanding the movie, the history of caste system is needed to be known. You should know who Ambedkar is. The music in this film was so perfect for the theme with the lyrics and the visuals. I do get that a foreigner couldn't understand it at all. Comparing caste or even race and class is very superficial and Jaby doesn't understand this at all.
It infuriate me so much when he say classism..he didn't grasp the entire essential of the movie...they just oversimplified casteism with the word classism.. knowing little bit about ambedhkar may helped them understand or atleast paid attention when principal stress importance of education to uplift him..
Why should they? Stop forcing others to be "self perceived virtuous" as you are. Even i didn't get a lot of the reference in that movie granted i speak the same language and comes from the same tamil culture. And that's a good thing. As generations progress, the importance of caste becomes more and more insignificant. Never in my entire school life or college life did i know what castes are or treated my mates differently because of their background. That's the result we should be aiming for as a society. Your caste doesn't make you a oppressor or victim, your actions and belief does.
When it comes to caste i lie at the middle of the spectrum as an OBC. so should i choose to be a victim or an oppressor? Eventhough i have no part in any of these oppressions.

1. His dad is not transgender. He is a man who act like woman in plays.
2. The film is about a rural area where the castism plays big role in many places. You won't believe I have seen similar things in my college itself.
3. The old man who kills some people is a hired killer who do honarable killings for his caste people.
4. Dr. Ambedkar is one who wrote a many laws for Indian govt as he is also from lower caste and suffered lot. But he chose the right way to study and change the environment. (I mentioned very less about him but there is lots of reference related to him in this movie like blue color, principal role potrait etc)

the point of the movie is to get the frustration.The reason he never said his girlfriend might be because she's gonna support him and their relatives are not gonna do good to her for that often that might lead to greater problems going even upto the point of conflict and violence between.communities(seriously there are villages burnt due to caste issues and it's just 10-15 years ago not in the 18th /19th century) . in recent times its decreasing drastically but it was how it happened few years ago or in the last decade that's how caste system and this oppression works in India its hard to relate for foreign audience....achara got that part right

There are cultural nuances and social structures in different Indian societies to be understood before you view these films. Jaby does not get it most times but often Achaea is mostly spot on. Maybe because Buddhism and Hinduism are quite similar and she does not look at everything through one lens. Not blaming Jaby but that is how it is.

In the climax heroine father asking "sorry" it's not a normal word in Tamil .. here the term refer to " mannichidu" people here won't say this word that much easily it bounded with prestige and pride .. if you ask any random Tamilian and ask them say any one work between sorry and mannichidu ..they quickly go for sorry only because it's doesn't have the power .. due it's over usage
