XTAR VC8 -- 8 Slot Battery Charger

  • Here's the FIRST 8-slot charger from XTAR.

    The VC8 can handle both Li-Ion and NiMH cells equally as well at the same time.
    Some of its features are those that I'm sure you've seen on other units. It uses a CC/CV algorithm, and can jump-start a 0 voltage battery.
    Batteries can be charged in all 8 slots .... but in slots 1-4, you can also choose to test the capacity of a cell, in addition to preparing it for long-term storage. These settings are described in the video.
    The unit also boasts that in two of the slots, you can select a super-high current of 3A!

    Feeling slightly embarrassed... I have an important update for this video! It was bothering me that the current seemed to remain on the lowish side even after selecting it. So as a test, I switched out the USB adapter I was using, with one MADE by XTAR (don't ask why I didn't do that in the first place). Anyway, after the switch, it performed as claimed! Switching to 2000, and even 3000mA, is NOW delivering the promised results!!!!
    So PLEASE disregard my commentary, which states just the opposite!! I feel dumb, but also elated that it's now performing as it should :-)

      If you had the 3 batteries in when trying to charge at 1a, that could have been the problem also. It will only charge at 1a when only 2 batteries are being charged.

      @Man in the Park if USB port is on the other side of the cable (as we can see from the video) then charger is obviously prepared for 5V input. I had adapter with multiply voltage choices, used it on 9V for my camera, forgot to switch to 5V and pluged it into XTAR 4 slots charger - unfortunately burned it out instantly 😔

      That was a couple of years ago and I don’t remember now if that difference in voltages played a role or (and) the reverse polarities.

      was wondering how come it just 250mah, but make sense if using USB port :D

    I think the reason that it wont charge at the full amount set is that current is reducing as the cell gets full. I have the VC8 and found that if I discharged the same cell I could reach the 1A limit that I set. I don't think this is a fault. Thanks for the video.

      Thanks for the comment Ian. Yes, it IS known that as battery voltage increases, the amount of mA going IN, decreases. Although I still questioned it when one of the batteries I went to charge, was at 3.52v. That is quite low enough that a full current should be applied. Re your discharging statement; in most chargers I own that can perform a discharge, they normally do so at a LOWER rate, than when charging. Maybe this is where the VC8 differs.

    I just bought three of these on sale for 29 bucks a piece and got three of the adapters.
    Going to build a "powerwall" of sorts for use in my pool pump.

    I bought 3 of these on sale REALLY CHEAP and I'm glad. My major complaint is the discharge current for capacity testing. It's only 300ma. That's not a great number when you are testing the mettle of used cells.
    Beyond that, charging 8 at 500 ma, a storage mode and internal resistance testing is all a plus.

      Of the chargers I've used that have a discharge feature, most use a lower current for that mode.

    HELLO! I have just bought one as well, but still choosing a proper adaptor. Glad I watched this.
    What power supply are you using? It must peak out at 15v/3a...

      It's a high voltage/amp XTAR adapter. Didn't I show it in the video?

    Charging an AAA battery is problematic. They don't sit well. You need to place them hanging, and should they move they will not charge. I contacted the supplier and they sent new pins. But not sure how to open the unit to replace them. Now they are unreachable. Anyone was able to open the case?

    Hard question: When you place a battery into the VC8, Lithium ion or
    NiMH appears, right? What does it mean if the battery type is flashing
    during charge? The manual doesn't mention that.

      From what I've seen - it means nothing. And I've seen it STOP flashing after a few minutes.

    Why Ni-MH is blinking? I think you cant mix Lithium and Ni-MH battery in the same compartment.

      I've watched after putting in NiMH cells... and the flashing stops after about 5 minutes. So slots within the same section can charge both types at once :-)

    Dear Sir,
    thank you very much for your clear video. I just bought this charger and didn't understand much about it. At least now I know how to discharge the battery to a safe level so that I can use it to make a bicycle battery.
    unfortunately I cannot find how to charge a battery to a fixed volt value after which the charger must stop charging. For example, I want to charge my battery to exactly 3.4 volts, how do I do that?

      You cannot set it to a particular voltage. You would need to start the charge and pull the battery at the desired point. Selecting voltages can only be done on a "hobby charger".

      This is obviously a faulty unit. If it was only recently that you bought it I would contact the seller and let them know.

    Alright, just bought him at local webstore.. everything loox ok but when i connected my usb multimeter i saw a very strange current behaviour, the same as my other charger yonii-d2 (thought it was defective, that was why i went after vc8). The current fluctuates (i have 6 AA ni-mh in) with voltage at 9.06V when charged with 500mA about 0.29A to 0.62A.. it changes rapidly.. is this normal behaviour?? I thought that ni-mh is charged CC-CV (constant current constant voltage)

      How are you using the meter? - testing each battery separately at + & - ends? I've never put a meter to mine, but it's my understanding that NiMH are never charged at constant voltage. That is reserved for lithium-ion. So I would say yes...in this case...it's normal behavior.

      @@Lightsngear ok, problem solved, it's a very common behaviour i was told by an electroengineer, it has something to do with many big capacity capacitors in the charger and the charger never draws the same amount of current from the trafo..

    Can this start to charge 18650 at 0v? I have 6 Samsung same as yours at 0v and want to buy a charger that will recognise them and charge. Thanks

      Thanks for asking. Yes! It has 0 volt activation function.

      Just get a full battery of same type connect in parallel for 1 minute to bring 0 volt battery up to voltage and any charger will see it.

      No. The best you could do is use every other slot.

      Yes it can :-) They're snug, but they fit!

      @@Lightsngear thanks for the reply and good to know. I am considering this charger but also considering the Efest LUC V8 Double LCD Screen Fast Battery Charger as well as another. Any plans to review the Efest?
      My main current charger is the Gryfalcon 88-8 but am thinking of adding another 8 bay to the mix. So that has me deciding between another Gryfalcon 88-8, this Xtar, and the Efest I asked about above.

      That's terrible. But the unit is NOT junk! I have had ZERO issues with mine. I'm also not sure what you mean by "lasted". People love to make blanket claims without detailing the issue. Have you contacted the source where you got it?
