      At Veterans Stadium, the Wall of Fame was dedicated to Phillies AND A’s. That’s how I learned about players like Jimmy Foxx, Chief Bender and Lefty Grove. The names of Athletics players from the Wall are listed on the Connie Mack statue outside CBP.

    Great video. Very cool that Philly still recognizes the long and stories history of philly baseball in the A's history ... I don't think anyone will ever top Connie Mack's # of wins (or losses) as a manager in the major leagues .....

    Interesting side note, in 1940 Connie Mack almost hired Babe Ruth as manager to replace him after his 40th anniversary in charge. They spent the day together and Babe's wife did all the talking. Mack ultimately passed on Ruth telling his sons, "his wife would be running the ball club inside of a month."

      It was self inflicted. Connie Mack hung around way too long and the team had lost 100 games for several years. When the Phillies, won the pennant in 1950, that was the final death knell as whatever A's fans were left, migrated to the team winning games.

    • @UnderhillKoufax
      @UnderhillKoufax 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@williamford9564, Yeah. It was a real shame, because the A’s still have a much better legacy in Philadelphia than the Phillies. They have more pennants and World Series wins. The Phillies are still the lesser team historically.

    It is most unfortunate that the Philadelphia Athletic’s major dynasties coincided with the outset of World War 1 and the Great Depression, which suppressed attendance and eventually caused Mack to break up the dynasties.

    What????
    The A’s definitely did NOT win the World Series in 1914. In fact, they were swept by the Boston Braves which lead Mack to loudly muse that his players had gotten mixed up with professional gamblers and thrown the games. It was his suspicion of gambling related shenanigans that motivated him to break up the team.
    That 1914 A’s team was shadier than the ‘19 White Sox. They just didn’t get caught.

    Wrong, the Philadelphia Athletics won 9 pennants and 5 world series, they won the pennant in 1902, 1905, 1910, 1911, 1913, 1914, 1929, 1930, and 1931. The world series victories happened in 10, 11, 13, 29, & 30. Just because they won the pennant in 1902, before there was a world series, it still counts as a pennant. I've known this since I was 10 years old. And I'm a Yankees fan from NY....

    I once saw a quote from Lefty Tyler the star pitcher on the 1914 Braves who faced the A's and beat them in the world series
    who said" I would love to pitch against the A's every game , they swing at every pitch I throw". This A's club finished first and third in walks during their championship seasons I cant figure why they would do this, did they know that Mack was going to sell the team and it was just one big" screw you" before they were all dealt off. I just find this comment quite disturbing . You can find the quote on the SABR site should you be so inclined.

      Love the video; great job. I will probably be tarred and feathered for saying this, as I am a big-time Yankees fan of the old Ruth-Gehrig-DiMaggio-Mantle school, but that Athletics dynasty (yes, it most certainly was one) of 1929-30-31 deserves to be in the conversation about who is the GOAT. A lot folks way more smart than me think that for one season that is the '27 Yankees. The '29 Athletics are just as good, and maybe, just maybe, even better. They are without a doubt the team that time forgot.
