-을/를 시작하다 or -이/가 시작하다 are all possible structures. Compare the following sentences: 한국어 수업이 시작합니다. 'Korean class is starting'. vs. (메이는) 한국어 수업을 시작합니다. 'Mei is starting Korean class.'
