Until 1991 Kazakhstan belonged to the Soviet Union. Then it became independent. Today Kazakh but also Russian are official languages of Kazakhstan. The writing are still in Cyrillic but the government decided to use the roman way of writing within the next years (2025). Dimash speaks Kazakh and Russian and is studying Chinese and English. Dear Frank, this duo is superb!! On one side Dimash is a god of vocals, may be his absolute pitch makes him know exactly how to improvise and use different vocal resources in the precise moment of the song. On the other, I really admire Li Yugan because he doesnt have formal training but his professional level demonstrates he is an artist by nature. Li developed his act borrowing nan dan (male playing female roles) movements (hands and legs) and singing (in this case like meows) art forms from Peking Opera giving the traditional art a modern edge. In this performance Dimash plays The King and Li plays the Concubine which is a famous opera. My next suggestion would be Swan goose, another great Dimash duo with Tengri. Traditional music and instrumentation are magic!

He doesn’t speak Chinese. Therefore he always has a translator with him when he is speaking to a Chinese audience. Of course since he stayed there for almost a couple of years he knows a little bit of basic stuff in Chinese, but not enough to say he “speaks” it......Since he is from Kazakhstan, an ex-USSR country, his mother tongues are both Kazakh and Russian, so those two languages are the only ones he is truly fluent in. He speaks some English and is still improving it, keeps on working on it
This video marries 'Diva Dance' with 'Drunken Concubine'. Dimash is singing as the Emperor, and Li Yugang is singing the concubine part (he is well known in Peking Opera for singing the female roles. It is traditional for men to sing these parts.) The Emperor had several great times with the concubine where they got drunk etc. Here the Emperor is passing a death sentence on her, and she reminds him of the times that they had together. FRANK, Kazakhstan was Russian territory until 30 or 35 years ago, I don't remember well, I think that in 1991 Kazakhstan became independent from Russia, therefore Dimash speaks Russian and Kazakh.
