    There was a period in my life when I'd take self portraits whenever I'm having intense depressive episode. It's really therapeutic and made the outcome, even the process, made me embrace myself even more. Seeing the photos when I'm in tears or afraid or in agony was reaffirming. It reaffirmed that despite my mental illness, I'm still alive. Gives me hope, really.
    Thank you for this video.

    This video was on my recommended videos and the first I have watched on your channel. This is what I needed! I’m 46 years old and I still hate looking at myself in the mirror, let alone being on the other side of the camera. Your words are absolutely moving and really triggered something inside me. To be vulnerable in front of the camera is a pretty scary thought for me. This is something I will try with a more creative approach, if I can get the nerve up to actually do it. Thank you so much for making this video! 👏🏻

    I've been in the same boat when it comes to my thin frame/pale skin concerns. Coming from a macho Hispanic culture also added to the self doubt and low self-esteem. It wasn't until I allowed myself to be okay with not lifting weights when I didn't enjoy it. I allowed myself to by as ease with my irregular tones. I allowed myself to shutout everyone else's voice on the matter that concerned my body. Old habits die hard but its all a work in progress. I feel motivated to take some creative self-portraits! Thank you Sean for inspiring my little reflection and thanks commenters for sharing yourz

    Thank you for this, I've only recently started taking self portraits after years of avoiding the camera. I always feel so confronted of pictures of myself particuly the weight even when I look I the mirror I don't feel like a fat person until I see it in a photo. I'm very self conscious about my weight especially when others feel so free to talk about it or comment on the food I eat. But I just decided the other day to do a 52week project with self-portraits to 1. Try feel better about myself
    2. Improve my posing so I don't look so bad
    3. Improve posing so they photos I take of others look better
    4. Have something for my son to look back on in years from (most important)
    5. Starting a weightless journey so will be good to compare over time

Not what one would call "Skinny" (I hate that word) but certainly able to manage a normal weight range without many of the other issues that many of those early bullies are probably now battling with. Remember the saying, "He who laughs first, laughs last".

    Sean. I found this particular video very moving. Tears actually. I am one who has always been a person prone to being a little heavier. Kind of bulky more than anything else. My image of myself was not always very flattering instead it tended to be that I have been a shirt on guy at the beach or pool. I will practice this exercise and try to take photos in ways that I think are uncomfortable for me, but maybe how people see me. I watch all of your youtube content and so enjoy your candor and approach to life and photagraphy. I am sorry for your recent situation, but as you are finding out, all things lead to growth in some way or another. I have mentioned previously your preacher-like presentation and truly appreciate your honesty and words. Thank you.

    I don't mind taking the occasional self portrait, but I've never thought of using the techniques that you've shown.
    I've had a physical disability since birth, and I'm 51 now, and achieved a lot, I think, but making myself vulnerable for a self portrait is something that I haven't done yet. If you can lay bare your insecurities, I think I can, too.

    I still have a minor little body image problem with myself. I was the complete opposite of what you described, I was a pretty fat kid, and lots of my classmates made fun of it, they made sure that I remember everything for life, which is pretty sad, and I'm not sorry for me, I'm sorry for them. But nontheless, I never felt really secure in my body, and two things helped me a lot fixing that. Once I got together with a girl, and the first time she saw me without a shirt, she said "God you look good." And I mean, that's pretty cool if I think about it, I never had that image in my head... The second major breakthrough was the first moment where I sat down in front of my camera, and recorded the first ever video for RUclips. I watched it back, and what I saw was nearly not as bad as I imagined and always saw in the mirror.
    I can 100% get behind the idea of self portraits, and I love your work trying to help people with videos like this, just don't stop! Thanks for being here for us! 🙂

    Honest and deeply inspiring. I remember when you brought Fiona Lark to your channel, it was a changing point for me, how she sneak into her photographs in an almost ghostly or magic way. It was a fascinating revelation. That took me at this point, like a following chapter, the point when a self-portrait turns into an exploration of ourselves and a redemption for insecurities or a beaten self-esteem, where vulnerability becomes something powerful. Thanks, again. The collection of photos is fascinating.

    Our shame is deep. For shame is the result of soul injury. Mirrors,
    however, are sacred, not only because they permit us to witness
    the body we are fortunate this time around to be in, but because
    they permit us to ascertain the condition of the eternal that rests
    behind the body, the soul. As an ancient Japanese proverb states:
    when the mirror is dim, the soul is not pure.
    Art is the mirror, perhaps the only one, in which we can see our
    true collective face. We must honor its sacred function. We must
    let art help us - Alice Walker

  • @autumngreenleaf3390
    @autumngreenleaf3390 3 года назад

    Thanks. I have had that mirror impression often. It's as if someone else entirely was there. I've never liked images of myself, not because I am vain, but due to viewing myself from the inside. My outward image doesn't seem to match who I am to myself. Most people don't know much about me and my impression from how they treat me seems as though my face says I am someone unlike myself, a plain women with no distinct memorable qualities, someone with no remarkable features. But if they would simply get to know me they would possibly see me quite different, someone with a diverse past of remarkable experiences and knowledge. As I think about it I don't recall anyone having taken my image in quite some time, so maybe I should take one to have on hand just for the funeral in some future time. By the way, I always admired men with all those veins and other features since that gave me the impression it occurred when those men were strong and used their hands and arms often.

  • @ChrisW444
    @ChrisW444 3 года назад

    Really enjoyed that. So good that you can open up to people and yourself and especially when you are obviously going through a relationship break up and that you still appear strong. It's great you achieve as you do despite your reservations about yourself. Wish I could be so strong but maybe I will find courage to try the self portrait thing as you suggest. I hate looking in mirrors never mind trying to find a nice angle etc. Mirrors are only for shaving and only because without it would be dangerous!! Anyway, thanks for this really enjoyed it as I do most of your stuff. Take care and keep the videos coming.

    Such an amazing video… kind and wise word. And you are relatively so young. It’s nice to watch your mature videos in this ocean of vain videos of RUclips

    What a wonderful vlog, really caught me off guard. I've suffered for as long as can remember from body dysmorphia and am never happy. I tried this and I actually loved the pictures. Thank you, not just for the vlog but for the open and personal admissions. This will help people more than you will ever know.

    Thank you lots for putting into such beautiful words the importance of this art.
    I like to say that I'm recovering from self hate one self portrait at a time and I'm convinced everyone should try it!

    This is a great video. Self portraits are a great way of seeing yourself in a new light. They’re also a great way to give you some inspiration and force you to be creative. I did some creative self portraits in a video I made shooting Cinestill 800T where I made myself into a character and I really loved the results I got!
