Great video, Jim. You jam packed it with so many wonderful facts about the value of leaves. May we all take heed and better care for this planet we steward.
I tried to take advantage of the upcoming cold spell(s) by planting nearly 100 new daffodils earlier this week, after I had first refrigerated them for about 5 weeks during our warm autumn in zone 8A in NC. I try to work with nature whenever possible.
watching this at 11:30 pm friday night, realize the low tonight is 24, better put my jacket on real quick & go empty the rain barrel! 🤣 thanks for the reminder!!
Here in Central Texas (8b) temperatures have been zigzagging a bit for us. Wednesday of last week we had 66°/36°F for our high/low. By Sunday, we were at 81°/61°F. Yesterday we had 56°/36°F and we're there today. The middle of next week we have lows in the low-mid 50s with our first rain forecast in over two weeks. That's probably the worst part for us. While certainly not as cold as your area, we're getting infrequent rains. Our soil, which is mostly limestone underneath the root areas, doesn't retain much moisture.
Well it is that time of year. My ‘Winters Joy’ Camellia had its open blooms live through a long 29° night!? That one seems to be proving to live up to its zone 6 status! (I’m in Buffalo) Happy Thanksgiving!
A few of the many birds I feed insist on drinking from the water in the ant baffle used for the hummingbird feeder. Long after the hummers have left, I maintain the fresh water there even though there's a clean bird bath nearby. I have to remember to take it down and put it up every day or they yell at me 😂 Wish I could bring more plants in but I've enjoyed our long season, had a bloom on a mostly dead Lobelia in the red, white and blue container this week. It will be interesting to see how plants take this sudden dip.
Zone3b/4a here, on the subject of cold. Everything is relative. If a person's temp has been at 40 for a month, and then its 20, that's cold. If it were 20 in summer for us suddenly, we'd feel it was pretty frigid too. Just because it's so cold up here that the christmas trees were too cold to go through the wrapper yesterday (lol), doesn't affect your perception of cold. My complaing about sub zero probably could be seen as silly to someone in northern Manitoba. It's all relative.
I had planted a Juliette Cleyera a couple months ago then moved it a couple weeks ago. I’m in zone 8 but I think I’m going to cover it to try and prevent shock. Don’t know if that’s necessary but I’ll do it anyway. 🤞🏻
Last winter, when we had temps around 20 degrees, I covered my Juliet Cleyeras (and a few other plants that are cold hardy to zone 7) because they were planted that year. I'm in zone 8, too. It was not much work, and I would rather be safe than sorry!
In my experience (could be the variety) Camilla buds are iffy in 20 degree weather - they certainly won’t bloom in the 10s. Christmas lights and frost cloth guaranteed blooms last year.
I've left plastic rain gauges out over winter and they crack. After having a half inch of rain in the gage after every rain, I checked, and it was cracked.
I love the many advantages of leaving the leaves. Am I being too crazy by blowing off the whole leaves and reintroducing the shredded leaves. I can't remember if you clean up the leaves in the spring. It seems like a fine balance. Especially if you want to add mulch.
I am in zone 7 Oklahoma. I ordered three 5gal Lemon Cypress to plant because it was still 60-70 degrees everyday. But suddenly temps dropped to freezing and I have these big cypress in nursery pots, what should I do? Do I plant them really quickly or do I need to try to find a way to store them? Thank you!
When you bring plants in, to protect them from a temporary chill, do you keep them in a cool room? In an unheated garage? Just in a sunny window even though that might be warm?
I do all three! General rule I am doing this winter are: Desert plants in unheated garage with supplemental light. Taller more mature Fiscus in Maintenance closet inside garage with supplemental lights (40-50F). And small plants and tender tropicals come inside. Definitely not hard rules for my plants as I've learned in the past years that some could use more cold, some would like more light but if I can't give them more light I give them colder temperatures within reason.
It got all my flowers last night 😕😕😕 my azaleas were finally blooming so much! And my vincas and dahlias hope my dianthus make it thru til next week 🤍🤍🤍 oh my camellias 😕😕😕😕😕😕 my white shi shi’s are covered in blooms Thanks for these!!!
I’m in zone 5b6a and I forgot to winter protect my big leaf hydrangeas and went through a 27 degree night . Is it too late to winter protect the set buds now since it went thru a freeze or can I still protect it ?
I love your 5 minute Fridays. I’m in Atlanta and appreciate your great tips !!

Hello, Mr. Jim putnam and Stephany and gardeners friends. Happy holidays ❤❤❤❤❤🌻 🌻 🌻.

Happy Holidays Jim! Good show on the usual questions I’d have. Thank you.
Thanks for this helpful advice!
Would you ever consider a small greenhouse tucked away somewhere to just tuck a few sensitive pots into?

I'm headed for my first hard frost this weekend. My buddleia are still awake 😬. (7b)
I've got two Hosta sending up bloom stalks over dying foliage in north Georgia 😕

It’s will be the coldest we’ve had here in Michigan difference is we won’t get above the freezing mark but lows mid to low 20s

I lost 2 glass rain gauges to frozen water so I recently purchased a plastic one. Hoping it can hold up better to winter.
I've left plastic rain gauges out over winter and they crack. After having a half inch of rain in the gage after every rain, I checked, and it was cracked.

They mulch ontop of the leaves come Spring! I've started doing it too and enjoy being able to keep the leaves on-site vs sending them away.
I’m in 6b do you think my mood ring podocarpus will be OK? They were planted about 2 months ago.

Lemon cypress, per google is marginally hardy in your zone as the plant is zone 7-10. Follow hortube recommendations for this.

When will you start planting bulbs?
