  • Jagger, a ten year old English Setter, "stalks" a grey squirrel. Look at about the 1:05 mark for the squirrel sitting on top of a rock in the middle of the screen.

Such a handsome and regal fellow. Mine alternates between looking like this and looking like a total goofball. Liver belton boy, he's great.

I recently had to put my ES down due to cancer. His name was Deuce and Deuce would point and stalk squirrels, rabbits and large birds like falcons and hawks. He was an Orange Belton. I'm glad I found this video. It reminds me of my Deuce. Great video; great dog. Thanks for posting.

@@vanessaverner8480 I am on my last setter, Popsie is just about 10 months now and I doubt that I will survive her. She's going to have a working future but I am retired now. All my other setters lived in kennels, sometimes I had as many as 10 at a time, Popsie is the first I have had in the house, she is a character and good companion.

Ah what great memories this brings back. My ES would do this stalk but she'd crouch while doing it. I believe thats where the "setters" part of the name come from. She'd do 5 minutes of slo-motion stalking of a robin and then she'd pause like Jagger does and slowly turn her head and look back at me as if she was saying "hey hooman, do you see that bird right there !!"

A beautiful dog. I never owned an English setter but admire them.
I had a Golden Retriever who would stalk birds focused like that, raising one foot off the ground and freezing.
Of course Retrievers are bird dogs.
She practiced for year, on ducks, grouse , seabirds. Eventually she caught a large Magpie chick and presented it to me proudly. I was bit bit horrified as i knew how aggressive adult Magpies can be.
And the chick's parents were sitting on a fence glaring at us.
I got my dog Casey to drop and put the chick in a shoe-box and left it in garden . we went away and when we returned the chick had gone. Hopefully taken back by its parents.
Don't like to mess with Magpies especially during swooping season !

I have a golden that stalks squirrels. She likes rabbits and leaves them alone. When geese are overhead she jumps in the air at them.
As for deer, there's a mutual respect for each other. If she's not outside it's ok for the deer to be in the yard. But if she goes out she'll chase them to the woods next door and stop. The deer stop when they're in the woods and the just stare at each other.
What a wonderful dog. She's older with cancer treatments. She'll be fine from the therapy. We have a few more years with her so the cost is worth it.

I have a young English Setter he came out of the mountain beside my home and was starved and nothing but bones and hide no collar or anything I put him in my yard and doctored him and I have had him about 5 years now and he is a great dog he was on point one morning when I was going to work and he was pointing a young Black Bear that hd crawled under my wifes ford escape I diddn't see the bear until I sat down in her car and was going to turn the switch on and put her windows up lol it ran out and went up my neighbors shade treee my dog is in my yard which is fenced in so he couldnt get to the bear or no doubt I would have to kill the Bear to save him from getting eaten .we have alot of Black Bears around.and he loves to bark at them when he sees one or smells one near by .he is just a big pet and he just opened my screen door and ran in and piled up on top of me.he loves to point the robin that is in the lilac bush by my porch he was doing that last night and my wife got afraid and called me from her car to come out and see what he was after before she walked in our yard.lol the bird has a nest in that bush and he loves to point it when she sits her nest. lol

I saved one setter off a street of Montenegro. Hunters in that country are dumping these beautiful, sweet dogs constantly. Really makes me angry. Serbian people in the Balkans do not treat animals well, it’ll make one want to scream. Beautiful baby here though
