Constructed in 1913, the Rockland Tunnel serves as a shortcut around the Wood Hill Mountain passes through what was once a busy village named Rockland Station. The (tunnel is 2,865 feet long) and is now part of the Allegheny River Recreational Trail in Rockland Township, Pennsylvania, about 21 miles south of Franklin via the trail which follows the meandering Allegheny River. The southern end of the tunnel is prone to leaking and in the winter provides a spectacular display of ice formations.
The Rockland (Woodhill) Tunnel remained in use by the railroad until the late 20th-century. In an inspired move, the tunnel was transformed in 2003 to be part of the local hiking and biking trail system. The tunnel now has an asphalt path running down the middle complete with reflectors.
