Daniel is my son, that was his favorite fishing spot...his three older brothers put up that memorial. I told them it looked like a grave....that is also his picture taped to the orange barrier blocking the road. Thank you❤very touching.
Daniel was a dear friend of mine. He was loved by so many, he loved fishing and had a smile that was very contagious. I see this video and can still hear his voice in front of the campfire or swimming in the water. Thank you for appreciating his memorial. LLDG ❤

Daniel Erwin Goliath aged 23, born April 1,1999 in Wyandotte Michigan, sadly passed away on April 11, 2022 in Wake Forest, North Carolina. Son to Roger John Goliath, Laura Ann Goliath with Jack Milam; brother to Aaron John Goliath, Christian Roger Goliath and Andrew Forbes Goliath; Grandson to Edna, James Walsh, Inge Goliath and Erwin Goliath. Daniel had far reaching energy that touched the lives of so many people, there were very few people who could say something bad about Daniel, he was a true outdoorsman and loved to spend time in nature or just generally hanging out and about with friends creating memories and stories that he told with such energy you couldn’t help but be captivated or just laugh. Daniel was always trying new things and packed so much life experience in to such a short amount of time from farming to traveling the state he loved or just gaming and chilling at home with friends and family he brought joy to people without trying. He was cherished by so many and the footprint he left behind will never be able to be filled, he'll always be present in our hearts and will never be forgotten by all those who knew him.
I use to work for a local gas company and I drove that road many times going to service the accounts of customers. There were a lot of road closings and changes when Falls Lake was created. Bayleaf is an old community, it was always a pleasant visit passing through the area before Raleigh fell victim to urban sprawl. I remember seeing the cemetery, it was more than likely a community or church cemetery judging by the simple stones marking many of the graves.
@fredericktaylor2891 Your past experience is interesting and sad at the same time. Although Falls Lake is a beautiful place to hike and fish, many people lives were uprooted. The town I grew up in NY had a population of 25k. Now, it's over 100k. Barley recognizable. People moving north from the big cities.
I grew up around Quaker Springs near the Saratoga Battlefield. Very small town in NY. I moved down here in 96 from Buffalo to 3 days later going through Hurricane Fran. In other Graves around the area, unmarked graves represented by a stone are usually slaves. If you go into Hillsborough at Blackwood Park there is a slave cemetery in the back of the park towards I-40.

I'm a native Tarheel. My ancestral family cemetery includes a few graves marked by plain rocks like those you filmed in the beginning. These graves are of slaves who became Christian. NC has cemeteries that were segregated, white and separate black cemeteries. This is a tradition/practice that largely continues unspoken. If this is an old church cemetery its possible that the church moved to a new location because of building the lake and may have a burial register with a numbered plot plan to will reveal the names of those interred.
Thank you to all of those who mentioned slavery and native Americans who don’t like to be called Americans; they like to be called native or Indian. But I will say slaves and natives built this land no and if buts. So when you are traveling any of the roads in the south or certain parts of the north, especially the Midwest and New England, and the very top of East Coast; remember, natives and slaves built his land. The Europeans and other individuals like the Spaniards and other countries came over to the Americas and took over. So we need to give credit where credit is due. I do like the fact that you dedicated your video to Daniel, that’s the only memorial that you saw with a name on it. But you did not see all of the slave & the native graves. My ancestors, both slaves and Indian people had this land first and navigated this land and plowed this land off of their backs and feet.
When I was stationed at Ft. Stewart in Huntsville,Ga there were small old centimeters scattered throughout the training area. It was always weird to come up on one when you were manuevering through woods.
Stones are called field stone headstones. Not necessarily poor. Depending on how long ago the burial took place, the family may not have had access to headstone businesses to purchase headstones, in the 1800s or early 1900s. Sometimes when headstones/fieldstones are grouped together it is a family. Smaller headstones/fieldstones are children. A lot of love and care was spent looking for the right fieldstone. Remember, this was the marker which family could return to so they can pay their respects later. There are definitely newer headstones which might have been placed in the last 20 or 25 years, even though death dates maybe in the 40s or 50s. So many are doing geneology and finding loved ones, so, out of love, purchase new headstones.
My mother, my brother, and I are mentioned in a book called "The last real people" by Joseph Lapointe. Its a book of people he met deep in the Adirondacks

In the area close to where you were is the Mangum and Langley house and the Mangum Allen House I believe alot of the Graves could be children because the are close together Depending on how old the grave site is I know Mangum had slaves so It could be that as well. I have been doing ancestry history Not so proud of it but I can't change it either

Nothing about Daniel but his obit. So strange. Another young man died there a year later. He was 21. Stranger still when I looked up Daniel Goliath 4/11/22 it is a bible verse 4:11-22 NLT.

Do keep in mind that Blackbeard(Edward Teach[Thatch]) made his home in Bath North Carolina, about 45mins north of Jacksonville, and often used the Topsail inlet. North Carolina has some of the oldest graveyards in our countries history because North Carolina was a "Profit State" so it had many farmworkers and land owners, so there are cemeteries all over North Carolina starting late 1600s for European settlers. Having been born and raised and still reside in my original hometown. North Carolina is full of fascinating history, and there's a lot of things and people in the ground that nature has taken over, plus here in Brunswick county, they found ancient beads used for trade typically by the inuit people who crossed the Bering Sea when it had was a land bridge, it is now the Aleutian Islands, so that gives even more credence to the history of this state. If been to Falls lake and the Neuse River many times.

Old as that graveyard was, it makes me think it might have been an old family graveyard. That the state would not take care of it but keep it separate unbothered. I guess the family can if they are still around. I see these all the time old family graveyards that are grown over and the families do not take care of them.

By NC law, you can move them if the family doesn't care or if there is no family. There lies the problem, there is always one who says it is going to stay. Thing that upset me, was yesterday you didn't even know the graveyard was there.
Family graveyards are common in NC. When I moved down here, I wondered about these little graveyards in the middle of fields and that’s what I learned. Because some people lived too far from churches (hard to believe today when they are everywhere), people were allowed to have graveyards on their property. There are no laws in NC prohibiting burying a body on private property. Unsolved murders anyone? 😮
@@Guesswhat211 I don't think you can bury a person anywhere now. I do believe that the funeral homes have got that fixed. I had someone in my family die in MT. He could not be buried in NC without coming from a funeral home. He was cremated. Then there was a 1500-dollar groundbreaking fee. No matter how big the hole. There were a few other issues also. In a home graveyard, if it is already established, you are ok, but I think it is difficult to start a new one now. It is really a money racket that the funeral homes have got going. I thin the last funeral that I did about 4 yrs ago was 12K. I already had the grave, the headstone and the foot stone. The person didn't mind seeing their name on a foot stone when they visited their spouse.

I find it interesting that your audio clipped for a second as you stood by that memorial.
When editing the clips, I might have offset the audio. There is a lot of filming that doesn't make it into the video.

I’d bet those small graves are for children, infants, or miscarried babies. Death rates for the young used to be a lot higher.
