I really like this original song, Angelina's performance is extraordinarily raw and aggressive with her unique, raspy and deep voice, while performing those fantastic and beautiful tonal scales, which completely captivate you and she does it in perfect calm, effortlessly, as if it were the most normal thing in the world. With her I continue, even after many years of listening, to have goosebumps every time, in particular with every new wonderful vocal experiment that she creates. This was a songwriter showcase, were Toby was invited to present him. He had several of his hit songs performed by different artists (including his own daughter), and Angelina just did If I Were A Boy, and then this one. So yes, it wasn't her show, she was just supporting Toby, although in this case which her own original song, she co-wrote.
You could have a look to If I Were A Boy with just her and Toby on keyboards, live in a tiny venue (like 25 people in the audiance), beautifly filmed, excellent audio quality, on the Sofar Sounds channel. This listen is well into three digits, and it is as delicious as the first time. I love the informal vibe. The dynamics--- her phrasing, her treatment of individual notes, her grit to delicate, her loud to whisper, and her power..... Like Billie Holiday, she treats her voice like a fine instrument belonging to the band, to composition, and to incredible delivery. I love this so much. Angelina did not sing on the 20th. She remained in London for a while.
First, let me say I’m so glad you got the video with the cleaned up audio. It makes it clear that Jordan is singing “I thought I told you I would mess up girl I warned you right from the start, which makes it a follow up to Now I’m the Fool, about unrequited love from Jordan’s point of, vs Bad Valentine, about unrequited love (same person) from the ex’s point of view, still sung by Jordan. Jordan is a brilliant songwriter, she takes a relationship from her journals and writes two songs about the same relationship from the viewpoint of both partners, who can do that? Only a few listeners have caught on to what this song is really about, I’m merely expanding what another person replied to me about the two songs. If you’re interested, listen to Now I’m the Fool, pay very close attention to the words she used, then go back and listen to Bad Valentine and listen to the words she used. The two songs are about the same relationship from two different points of view sung by the same person, the unbelievably brilliant Angelina Jordan Astar! And you thought she was just another pretty face lol! ( that’s an American colloquialism, by the way)
Almost everyone misinterprets these lyrics and think Jordan is the Bad Valentine because the video they watch doesn’t have the best audio and there’s a question of what she’s singing in the line “I thought I told you I would mess up girl”. It varies from “mess up yeah” to “mess up your heart”, because it rhymes, “mess up your world”, like Angelina Jordan would do that to another human being. These people obviously have no clue who this person really is. Anyway, Richard, watch both videos paying close attention to the WORDS, and see what you think.
