***** Interesting anecdote about the 1936 Berlin Olympics: There were two sprinters on the USA team who happened to be Jewish (Marty Glickman and Sam Stoller). They were supposed to run in the 4 X 100 relay. However, Avery Brundage, head of the US Olympic Committee, dropped them from the race for fear that it would "embarrass" Hitler if Jewish athletes won gold medals. Instead, he substituted two other sprinters, one of which was Jesse Owens. This event won Owens his fourth gold medal of the games. Glickman later became a nationally known sports broadcaster.
***** His particular hatred was for the Jews. Blacks were not on his radar because there weren't many in Germany. By 1936, he had already fired all Jews in civil service and had them tossed out of their teacher's jobs. And he was just getting warmed up.

That German fella loved him respected him and adored him. He didn't deserve to be caught up in the horrors of war, I wished he would of left with Jesse to live in America because he had the biggest heart ..... So sad!!
When my husband INFINITEPUGGS told me of this video I watched it and cried when the narrorator said these two became the best of freinds but the German man died 9 years after they met and when they showed the picture of the 2 of them at the end of the video I lost it. Such a nice tribute.
After 1936 Olympic Games Jesse never see this friend again. Sadly according to history this guy Who helped Jesse Owens died in World War II battlefield.
Luz Long did indeed die but he was a special man in breaking barriers alongside Jesse Owens. Here is his final letter to Jesse while he was in WW2, really powerful: lettersofnote.com/2016/08/15/tell-him-about-his-father/
Jesse Owens will always represent the very best that one can be. His performances in Berlin are still the standard by which all are measured. His times and distances have been surpassed but not the class the man showed.
This is the best Olympics in history. From here Berlin invented a revolutionary style of Olympics that had never been done before, the celebration, the participants, the athletes and the spectators all knew exactly what to do to present a great image of the Germany sport. Carrying the torch, arranging the masses, the forms that the masses used to perform during the parades, is a truly artistic masterpiece. After this Olympics, the rest of the countries began to imitate the Berlin celebrations, to what we have reached today.
Owens said crowds were cheering him in Berlin, in the trams, everywhere. In the US on the contrary, black people were still segregated in buses... When Owens went to a celebration organized for him at Waldorf Hotel in NY, he had to take a separated service elevator to not mix with the Jewish-White crowd. I admire this guy for his honesty in telling all this.
Yes Jesse said that in nazi germany he could ride on the front of the bus and was treated as a human being, back in america he was treated as a second class citizen
Almost certainly the greatest athlete of all time. A true natural phenomenon that made a separation between him and his opponents and he would have won also the fifth gold medal in Berlin in the relay race 4 to 200 if they had not hindered him for envy. With his exceptional and unreachable talent he would have almost certainly won successive Olympics in the same specialties, but there was the World War II. Imagine if he ran today with all the innovations, new materials and new current knowledge. And without the several hard obstacles that he had to suffer. I don't think that Bolt would have been able to defeat him at all not even in a single specialty.
The paper I choose to do in the 5th grade was about Jesse Owens. He had to overcome a leg tumor that his own mother had to operate on. What a remarkable man. I loved he really rubbed Hitlers nose in it.!!

The only thing nazi germany nailed is that they were better than their american white counterparts, they didn't nail their aryan superiority claim because they couldn't beat Jesse Owens, John Woodruff and other black competitors who were both supposedly inferior to Hitlers so called 'Aryans'.
That was Jesse Owens with natural talent back in the day, today with spikes a track and actual training he would give Usain Bolt a HUGE run for his money
I agree, it doesn't make you un-American to question what's wrong with this country. Yes, I would rather live here than anywhere else, but it's not the greatest country in the world. The citizens who think America is perfect are ironically the ones that are hurting the country the most. For example, If you have a child that's misbehaving do you not correct that child's bad behavior or do you turn the other cheek. I love my country and it does have the potential to be a great country one day.
That's what's great about America, you're allowed to question it's authority. The founding fathers made it like that. You are allowed to comment about with no backlash from the government that you're talking about. It's not perfect, but it's the best thing we've got.
1936 was also the year when Max Schmeling knocked out Joe Louis to become the heavyweight champion of the world. I leave it those who believe that Jesse Owens single-handedly 'destroyed the myth of the superiority of the Aryan race' to figure out which one was the more important sports event. The truth is, Owens appreciated Hitler and Germany more than his own president and country. Maybe because he could have married a white woman in Nazi-Germany had he wished to do so, not in the US though. Maybe because in Germany he got the respect he deserved for his accomplishments when he achieved them, not later on when history was raped.
Michael Vierling You're full of it. The Nazi era German parliament outlawed mixed marriages in German controlled African colonies. Google "Blacks During The Holocaust"
+Michael Vierling He did not need no nasty white woman. Germany is still white. White people are the same no matter the country. And that guy beat an old Joe Louis. Nobody even remembers his name.
+mspinkytee you have no idea what your talking about, do some research before commenting.... He did not beat an "old" Joe Louis. Joe Louis was in his early 20s and in his prime, he was still effectively fighting into the early 1950s which was 15 years later. Max schmelling was also the only person to ever knock Joe Louis out until rocky Marciano did in Joe's last fight. So give the damn kraft some credit, where credit is due
On his return to the US after the Olympics, Owens was not invited to the White House. He later said, "Hitler didn't snub me - it was FDR who snubbed me. The President didn't even send me a telegram."
Lutz Long was a true sportsman, and more people should take notice. Lutz and Jesse walking arm in arm around the stadium must’ve made Cpl Schickelgruber want to spit lava. Served him right.
My experience is that long jumpers all usually like that. Go to a meet and you'll have people on other teams helping out and such. Especially when they are just warming up.
My Father and Uncle were in the stands, they were just outta high school and I have a long letter my Father wrote FROM THE STANDS! AN EYEWITNESS ACCOUNT! Of course, NPR put out their "research" denying that Owens even knew Lutz before this race!
Jesse Owens earned his gold medal without a doubt, but documentaries and the media always focus on just Jesse Owens in the 1936 Olympics. Germany took the most gold medals that year. I'm curious as to why they always fail to mention that.
Fun fact : hitler was in one of his races and said that germans is more superior then every human and jesse owens proved him wrong and when jesse owens won some people say hitler gave him a handshake
In the movie " The Jesse Owens Story " they showed Hitlers top athlete helping Jesse as much as he could and was the first to congratulate and compliment Jesse as much as possible. I'm glad that wasn't a Hollywood made up story . cool
the crowd was cheering for Owens almost as loud as their own athletes and that is true sportsmanship!

Agreed, spike cleats alone do a lot
He is fast
Jesse Owens era un capo punto!
Beautiful, and sad....

Wow I had no idea about this story
My god what an absolutely beautiful life
Made it against all odds
Friendships are worth more than gold!!
So give the damn kraft some credit, where credit is due
kraut*
Another life long friendship that defied the race barrier
A man who overshadowed one of the most popular leaders of the modern era, who would have seen that one, revered by the German public as a hero
On his return to the US after the Olympics, Owens was not invited to the White House. He later said, "Hitler didn't snub me - it was FDR who snubbed me. The President didn't even send me a telegram."
Jesse Owens is fast as fawk
I agree. It's highly probable. He was a beautiful man, proud to wear Germany colors. He died at war :(
Jesse Owens
great man
Lutz Long was a true sportsman, and more people should take notice. Lutz and Jesse walking arm in arm around the stadium must’ve made Cpl Schickelgruber want to spit lava. Served him right.
Both these guys were heroes!
They should be role models for everyone!
Nothing racist about the crowd of people cheering
Happy 100th birthday Jessie
My experience is that long jumpers all usually like that. Go to a meet and you'll have people on other teams helping out and such. Especially when they are just warming up.
Tears
Jesse Owens legendaaa !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jesse Owens and Lutz Long used different techniques when jumping.
I thing Lutz used the "hang" technique, while Jesse used the "glide" technique".
Jesse Owens was a star at the '36 Olympics, but overall Germany won in medal count!
AWESOME!!!
Fantastic story
My Father and Uncle were in the stands, they were just outta high school and I have a long letter my Father wrote FROM THE STANDS! AN EYEWITNESS ACCOUNT! Of course, NPR put out their "research" denying that Owens even knew Lutz before this race!
Seeing the german crowd asking Owens for an autograph a-la Usain Bolt is quite something.
Good comment, Amy Smerling 👏
owens is exceelent
please could anyone tell me the name of this piano cover ..i really love this music
Owens won the race!
I look up to Jesse Owens
Somethings the media won’t show
"WE DA BEST"
-DJ Khalid
You are the best man ever Jesse ownen
And 🤑😭
Big respect for Lutz Long
Jesse Owens earned his gold medal without a doubt, but documentaries and the media always focus on just Jesse Owens in the 1936 Olympics. Germany took the most gold medals that year. I'm curious as to why they always fail to mention that.
Con jesse owens y en esos juegos olimpicos, dio comienzo a las marcas adidas y puma.
He’s sooo fast
Grande atleta!
Thank you..pleez let us care
Fun fact : hitler was in one of his races and said that germans is more superior then every human and jesse owens proved him wrong and when jesse owens won some people say hitler gave him a handshake
In the movie " The Jesse Owens Story " they showed Hitlers top athlete helping Jesse as much as he could and was the first to congratulate and compliment Jesse as much as possible. I'm glad that wasn't a Hollywood made up story . cool
Que gran campeon el señor owewns
