  • In bushcrafting, the folding saw is a very efficient tool for sawing wood. A decent folding saw is light, portable, and fairly inexpensive. Over the course of my bushcrafting journey, I have learned a number of simple but effective techniques with the folding saw. So Today, I'm going to share these techniques with you, so lets get started
    Tree-felling Cut
The Tree felling cut allows small trees can be harvested much more efficiently than with a knife or hatchet. To do so, saw halfway through the trunk on one side, then do the same on the other side. Make sure that the 2nd cut is at least a quarter inch above the first cut. With this technique, one can take down a 4 inch diameter tree in under 15 seconds with minimum effort and control the direction of the tree's fall.
    2 handed cut
The 2 handed cut allows for the quick and energy efficient billeting of thicker logs. Secure the wood in the fork of a tree and use both hands and your back muscles to saw off each billet. When doing so make sure to gradually rotate the cutting angle of the saw blade to prevent binding.
    Splitting Cut
The split cut allows you to split wood without a knife or hachet. First, saw halfway through the middle of a stave of wood. Then strike the wood a few times against a tree trunk until it splits cleanly along the cut.
    Diagonal Cut
The diagonal cut allows for the creation of assymetric edges without a knife or hatchet. Brace a stave of wood against a tree and saw vertically downwards, keeping the saw away from your bracing hand. To prevent blade binding, make sure to use this technique on wood that is no more than 2 inches in diameter. Assymetric edges are useful for making wooding wedges, spikes, and digging sticks.
    Leg brace
In the leg brace technique, step on a stave of wood and use your back muscles to saw of each billet. This techqique allows you to billet smaller diameter wood in a very quick and energy-efficient way.
    Notch Cut
With the notch cut, prop the stave of wood under your feet, and saw along the flat end of the stave keeping the saw pointed downwards and away from your body. This technique is safe amd great for making notches in wood.
    Conclusion:
Now I'm by no means an expert with the folding saw, but I have found these techniques to be highly effective in my bushcrafting adventures. And they might just be helpful to you as well. Anyways, thanks a bunch for watching and if you want to see more videos like this one, please like, share, and subscribe to my channel. Thanks and have a nice day!

You should check out the bracing technique called the "plumbers vice," blew my mind when I first saw it. (No pun intended) Keeps your hand out of danger and gets the wood up off the ground.
    Great videos, cheers!

Excellent video as ALWAYs sir! I know it seems kinda to large and bulky and just negative all around, but speaking of saws I'd love for you to try out the Silky BIGBOY 2000 man. I've had one for about two years, and it's still going Strong. The only thing I'm thinking of doing, is switching out the saw blade and replacing it. I haven't broke one tooth or had it bend or anything but I know a nice brand new saw blade would = faster cuts.

Michael Fabian thanks for watching! Silky bigboy is awesome imho. I tried it once, it’s very efficient.

Hi Michael, did you know that the Bigboys blades are interchangeable. So you can pick any of the 4 tooth sizes to fit into your Bigboy 2000 handle. We have done a review on them all to help people figure out which one would be best for their application.

A fun project Idea for a future video would be a slate arrowhead. You have worked slate before and you can text the penetration on leather, meat, and all sorts of things! I have made many slate tools before, from arrowheads, spearheads, knives, and a few necklaces

Yeah slate is great for making knives and arrowheads. Though I have to say my current favorite for primitive projectile points would be bone or fire hardened wood.

Wannabe Bushcrafter I haven't made any of those points before. I would love to see those as well! Your channel is absolutely amazing and it was one of the key factors into me getting into primitive bushcraft

I canceled RUclips red today and left feedback about censorship. I am now on bitchute and gab .ai
I will no longer be getting my content here. I hope to see you on those sites. I suggest everyone leave feedback and make the switch. The only true voice we have is through a mass exodus away from corporate fascism. God bless you all.

The lower, shallower cut, is the one that determines the fall direction. By pushing the tree against the higher cut you pretty much wasted the whole technique and put yourself in needless danger. You never should need, or get in the habit of, pushing trees. But if you insist, you should always use a branch or similar object to tap on it from a safe distance.
Remember, there are some mistakes you only get to make once.

Why don’t you use a silky saw?

Deanda Lacapa thanks for watching! Silky saws are great but they are a bit too expensive for me, especially since the Bahco more than meets my sawing needs.
