My mum always tells me about my great grandfather who went over with the 36th that morning. He survived and also fought at Messines the year after. He never wore a poppy despite losing lots of his comrades. Apparently it was because the charity never helped him out during difficulties later in life. His son went on to fight in WW2 and was shot by Japanese in Burma but he survived too. My mum always talks fondly of Nathaniel, my great grandfather, because he used to give her money and bottle of coke to go to church with him on a Sunday. Because no one else would....
It saddens me to think that the sacrifice made by all those who died in 1914-1918, 1939-1945 and beyond was all in vain. Our freedoms, traditions and heritage have been given away or sold by our politicians. Shame on them.
Sad to see alot of people completely misunderstanding Ulster heritage. We are not bootlickers to the English, nor are we subservient to the Irish, nor are we Northern Irish. We are the Sons and Daughters of Ulidia, be proud of that - do not sell your heritage to another nation.
12th Royal Irish Rifles William Mcilheron 18297. Survived the Somme, Messines, Camrbrais and was took prisoner on 21 march 1918. Quis Separabit. Lest we forget. FGAU. No Surrender
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years contemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.
We will remember our fellow scots who have spent so many years in Ulster I hope you remember we scots are always yours friends allies and blood no surrender to Rome or Dublin rip reverend Ian Paisley
@BitingOsprey an ancient King of Ulster, in fact Ulster's last King before our homeland was subsumed by the hated Gaels...after the Battle of Moira in 637AD.
+Linda Irvine I never knew this was written, and sung by Brian Irvine. This makes sense to me now. I get a lump in my throat. Every time I listen to it. Thanks for your kind info! God bless you.
R.I.P to all the soilders on both sides in ww1 and ww2 they both fought because they had too not because they wanted too we will always remeber there sacrificies. this Might b a bit of a long comment but they deserve it :) R.I.P
Will we look on as these traitors destroy our Union Jack as our fathers travelled forward whilst we go tamely back but forever we will hoist our Union Jack
im sorry but you misunderstand, the UVF of 1912-1921 was nothing to do with the UVF of 19166-2007 the original UVF were a part of a division of the army and were the only division to achieve all there objectives on the 1st July 1916 at the somme
"We will remember the Somme" BTW The 36th Ulster Division WAS mainly Protestant, and certainly Unionist/Loyalist, as the few Irish catholics who volunteered to fight, joined the 16th Irish Division!...
@Flamorgan actully mate u'll find out that the "English" did put an effort into the Somme, just like the Scots , welsh and the IRISH..all united as British Soldiers..all they did all "pay the cost " as they had MANY causulties....and fianlly they DO rember the irish as we rember ALL fallen dead on Remebrance day....so ure talking out of ure arse
Too far that's because you irish and the Scots and welsh are mad men whats more frightened nigel with his tea or the Welshman raping the sheep the scotsman in his dress and the little irishman screaming potato?
@@greghwqkdhrw7196 the 36th is not Irish they where are and all ways be ulster men true British . Its not where your born its your tribe and genes . We came from the glens of Scotland and the North of England by request of are king . Betray use and feel the wrath. I Signed this in blood at 16th year's of age
Mythology overtakes history and facts yet again. The Irish 10th and 16th Division lost more on the somme than the 36th but hey who remembers them? RIP all brave Irishmen who fell in the Great War
The memorial parade on the 1st of July every year carries a banner at the front commerating all the fallen of the 36th, 10th and 16th divisions, but don't let bigotry take over facts
36th Ulster division had over 2,000 men killed at the battle of the Somme. 16th Irish division around 1,200. 18th Irish division never fought at the Somme. But hey, don't let the facts get in the way of your hatred.
@Flamorgan spelling and grammer is irrelevant...the fact still remains that my "statement" is right and yours is simply wrong......and I have researched it......so maybe YOU should making "Stupid statements"..............
