I'm so sorry for your loss! I can't believe your brother in law remarried less than 5 months after your sister died. That's crazy, but I'm glad you were able to channel your anger into something creative and that has been beloved by many people for over 30 years.

adventuresinlaurenland Men are perfectly capable of being a widowed parent. Women have been taking care of everything, even multiple children on their own. Susan disregarded the doctors, immediate family all to satisfy a dangerous desire, only for him to remarry after a few months!

After 5 months the Bro-in-law (Jackson) remarried. Tho, remember in the Movie, Shelby wanted Jackson to find someone else, that could provide him with Children & be a great Mom & Wife. But they were young & all (Jackson) wanted was to make Shelby (Susan) happy. Like they said in the movie (Life continues to go on & doesn't stop)!!

I think because it resonates with everyone who's felt lost. Nothing fancy, no CG, no car chases.. Just the human experience. I'm a 55 year old man, from Southern Louisiana, and it hits home when I think about my past, before life got all crazy. I've seen the movie countless times, and it's in my top three..

One of my top 10 movies also. The one and only Olympia Dukakis' death very recently at age 89 has made it even moreso. The movie is beloved among us gay guys with, personally, Clairee being my favorite character. "The only thing that separates us from the animals is our ability to accessorize!" And "Well, you know what they say.......if you don't have anything nice to say about anyone, come sit by me!" :-))))). FOREVER BLESSINGS on Olympia's fantastic heart, soul & legacy and the entire cast's, too.

I've seen the movie countless times, but I always want Shelby to get up and walk out of that hospital. It breaks my heart every time. I would be just like M'Lynn and never leave my babies for a second. I'm so sorry you lost your sister! I can't imagine the pain. God bless you and your family!

I just quoted a line yesterday, " If you don't have anything nice to say about anybody come sit by me." I've quoted so many lines. Loved the movie! One of my all time favorites! Sally Field's performance at the graveyard when they were walking back, she asked "does anyone have a mirror?" Dolly ( does anybody have a mirror? I don't know how you're holding up on the inside but your hair is just...... Then Sally Field started in on the scene that had me in tears. "Shelby's right it is a brown football helmet" Are you alright? I'm fine! I'm fine! I'm fine! No, no, I'm suppose to go first, I can jog all the way to Texas and back but my daughter can't, she never could, why, why? Why!? I want to know why Shelby's life had to end, will that baby ever know what she did for him, will he ever know how wonderful she was?! I want to know WHYYY!....... Oh, I just lost it, I cried and cried. It was so real. I'm not an easy crier but this scene really got to me. The whole movie but that part in particular.

Thank you for posting this. I felt surprised and maybe I shouldn't have been when I found out that this story which surrounds the relationships of these women was written by a man :) But above all it's a story about life and what we can choose to do with it and Mr. Harling obviously knows a lot about that and he's done his mother and sister proud by immortalizing Susan, not just for her son but for the world

I can quote the entire play and the movie. Is it me or are people talking during his presentation? It's extremely distracting. Sounds like a hushed murmuring constantly going on.
