What really happened when I was ejected from my hot air balloon

  • A wise lady pilot once said to me "you will make a mistake before you get to 50hrs experience, what matters most will be how you respond and deal with the situation as it unfolds". This is how mine unfolded at 47hrs. 2 years ago today on the 13th November 2017 my passenger and I were thrown clear of my hot air balloon after attempting to land and the balloon became "rogue" as noone was on board to control her. It may be 2 years ago but it still effects me. It has also however helped me become a better person and pilot. This video is to share experiences and hopefully help future pilots should this happen again. I hope this video is helpful in some way, its said we need to talk more about our traumatic experiences so here's mine. To end this description on a comedy note I shall quote a legendary pilot who repairs balloons after he inspected her damage heres what he said to me "She landed herself better than you ever will yourself boy!" xD

Thank you for sharing this and I do hope others learn something, learn from others mistakes because you won't live long enough to make them. all. I respect you for doing this, and again thank you. I would hope that I can share the same airspace with you one day in the future.

Jeff H thank you Jeff as I said the main reason for the video is to talk about what happened to hopefully encourage others to do the same. We talk about things like this enough, it does and can happen to anyone.

Not being cruel but some people aren't cut out to be Pilots! If you think Fabric will hurt people. And if you can't handle 10 MPH you don't need to be flying and your instructor should have never signed off on you without high wind expereance, that's not actually high wind flying, sometimes you get caught and or pressured by events but it always up to the PIC to make the call. you obviously got focused on instructing your passenger at the wrong time if you made contact with the ground and got ejected. And you last statement after two years, says you haven't learned control of your aircraft even with 132 hours of flying.

Mike Balloonman this was discussed in the MOR (Mandatory Occurrence Report) report I had to fill in at the time, it is believed I became caught in a thermal and my passenger will tell you that we definitely were not landing in 10mph it was closer to 25... About the fabric my autistic mind works much different to yours, you maybe right but my crew and the teachers there believe I did the correct thing. Also 10 miles traveled in 40 minutes speaks for itself no? The weather here in the UK has been very unpredictable this year forecasts not as forecast and wind gust speeds higher than forecast. I have landed in higher speeds before but this one caught me off guard with all due respect I have learnt much better control of my balloon if you refer to some of my other videos. I’ve not had any serious incidents like this again so I think I’m pretty competent at being a pilot. Thank you for your comment.

@@REP-Ballooning Robert Thanks for Sharing Your Story and for being a Brave Sole in Putting Your story out there for all to see. I know this can be an embarrassing moment but also a Learning experience. Your Video was Viewed this past weekend and was dissected by Over 40 American LTA Pilots with various comments and conclusions. Please understand as the comments and conclusions were being made we did not have the ability to watch the entire Video Segment you have Provided. We were only given segments in between discussions. I would encourage evey Pilot to View your Full Video and come to their own Conclsions as a Learning tool. In this Day and Age of the Cell Phone and Video Cameras and Instant postings, We as Pilots are ALL One Flight away from becoming You Tube Famous. I can say I am Proud of you for your Ownership of this incident dissection of your own actions as I am sure it will Make you a Better Pilot. We all Have and Can Make decisions that May come back to us Maybe not in the way We had Originally Intended. I am Glad You are Safe and Hope you will be able to someday convince Your First Time Passenger to Go on a Less Adventurous Flight with you. I Now Have My Own Personal Pilot Restraint On Order.
Many Many Soft Landings to you in Your Future.
