This time Moroccan Spiced Veggie Burger mix from Artisan Grains.
"That's better... because you can taste the ketchup and not the burger."
Mr. Shrimp is vicious today.
I guess they would be better replacing some of the water with ketchup/tomatoes, and some with "frying safe" vegetable oil. Maybe some emulsifiers to make oils and water blend
Something ought to make The Shrimp tick
I lol-ed at that too.
I laughed so hard when he said that. 🤣🤣🤣
He wasn't even trying to be funny, but his honesty when he said it, was hilarious 🤣🤣
when even shrimp has no good things to say about a food you know it's BAD. he's literally the kindest politest reviewer of food i've ever seen.
"If you think I'm assembling this burger wrong, I guess you're welcome to think that..but...I don't really care"...love it 😂
Should have left out the patty. 😅
Lol that made me laugh
The producers of these burgers:
"Is it...Moroccan?"
"Maybe it is Moroccan!"
"Yeah...anything goes in Morocco."
I don't want to call you a racist at my own dinner party...
It's from the Atlas mountains.
No no no you read it incorrectly, it is More Oaken. Has earthy, woody flavours. That's what it means... isn't it?..I believe so, thus it is my truth, thus THE truth.
Needs more lettuce and beans, beans are pasta sauce.
@@FoxDeDieux You’re racist
“I’m not toasting it because I don’t want a toasted bun”.
That principle can be applied in so many ways👍🏻
After all, he's not Powder Toast Man, he's Powder Burger Shrimp Man!
That's logical thinking right there 😎
We used to eat something similar in the 1980’s as poor grad students. It came from the bulk bins at the local food co op. We found that having really sharp cheddar and ketchup was the way to go for eating the patties. I can still recall the flavor 35 years later. I think you described it well.
What's is like when it comes out the other end? Any changes in consistency and aroma?
Ketchup, Mayo &. Mustard solve every taste problem. You just have to take enough of it.
@@haywoodyoudome Please try it yourself and then let us know the result, thank you.
@@haywoodyoudome yeah, it's a bit smoother consistency and it kind of sticks to the roof of your mouth. But you can still taste the vegetarian. I think it's the patchouli sauce.
@@othername1000 It's bad enough when my Labrador does it!
As an omnivore who also likes to try various vegan/vegetarian alternatives, I always find these videos entertaining and informative. Thank You!
I'm the same way, I actually prefer making burgers at home from the impossible burger stuff instead of ground beef. It's just less fatty and still tastes pretty good.
@@greenbanana311 Lol! I tried a package of the impossible burger stuff from the store recently, and I discovered it was the stuff they made our school lunch meals from in the 1960s. Other kids told me it really wasn't meat and they wouldn't eat it because they didn't know what it was, but I didn't fully believe it not knowing what real meat was like. We couldn't afford it and my fully employed mom hated to cook, and didn't really know how. TV dinners were her specialty. I'd better add that she saved many other children's lives though.😊 But can you believe it? The stuff has been around that long!
That stuff makes me sick so I can't eat it
@@bakielh229 I think I said what I was trying to say.."¯\_(ツ)_/¯"
You'd be better just getting falafel mix! Tasty, vegetarian, and usually economical
💯💯💯% agreed!
Yeah dry falafel mix has beaten the pants off every dry veggie burger mix I've ever tried... most fresh veggie burgers come to that. Falafel is hard to beat when it comes to quick and tasty, spicy veggie meals!
Falafel is wonderful indeed !
Even though I consider myself as a 100% carnivore, I have to agree: a freshly made falafel sandwich with crunchy cabbage and tahin can beat the majority of the affordable "gourmet" burgers out there!
@@f.d.6667 How tf u a 100% carnivore?

Hope you're feeling better and the sun is shining
It is always safe and calming here, huh? Hope you are back in shape.
Mr Shrimp has a lovely calming manner. 😊 Hope you are feeling better.
Eat a few of these veggi burgers and things will probably pass really fast.

Yes, calming..... The Bob Ross of frugal cooking and foraging? 🤔🥰 Get out there and get some nice new Dandelion leaves! Healthier than expensive Organic spinach!! ✌️🇨🇦🥰
The emotional journey I went through with this video was really something - going from seeing the thumbnail, to truly believing in the moment as I watched it that maybe it WOULDN'T be so bad, only to be dragged back to reality once you finally tasted it. Thanks for making this video!
7:33 "I'm not toasting it because I don't want a toasted bun"... I love it!
I don't know what it is about your videos that makes them feel so calming and safe, but I really enjoy it and find it very soothing to watch your food experiments and forays into nature. It's funny because, even if they feel safe, they also encourage me to explore the world and try new things, to step out of my comfort zone and think in new ways. I originally found your channel because I wanted to watch scam baiting...I stayed for weird stuff in a can and nature walks! Thank you for being who you are and creating these videos. You may not know it but you are changing lives with your calming presence and kind manner.
I had a sense of deja vu when I started watching... as others have mentioned just like the burger mixes that used to been around in the 1980s. So I wasn't surprised with the outcome. The fact that you managed to fry them without them disintegrating deserves applause! And it's your burger, your bun, your build :)
It's the polenta acting as a binder.
Yeah. Tried a couple of those over the last 20 years. Was never very impressed with the results. And love falafel, so I'm by no means set on meat flavor.
@@raraavis7782 Just so! 'Flavour' is by no means reliant on meat, so these mixes are at the very least worth looking at.
I used to love them, we had them when we went camping in the 80s because we didn’t have a way to keep things cold. Tasted like holiday!
We had porridge and then smash instant mash and beans.
One of the most enjoyable mock meats I’ve had comes from simply pressing the whole brown oyster mushrooms in a frying pan to make them become more dense and meat-esc (the head of the wicked brand in Tesco came up with the technique), it’s well worth a go.
what is a "mock meal"?
@@sergiokaminotanjo *mock meat
@@AlphaAceEX ah yes hahaha l readi lt wrong. l get it now
Hell no. You can have all the rubber hockey pucks for yourself. Chonky mushrooms are nasty
shrooms are delicious... they should be called shroom burgers. That way l would certainly wanting to buy them instead of despising them as "mock meat" tbh
When you took those out of the oven I thought those were cookies for a second 😂
I'm glad you mentioned the quinoa. That could account for the weird flavor. Some people call it nutty. I call it inedible.
If quinoa isn't washed thoroughly it does have a weird bitter taste. I get it from a company that says it's pre-washed but even so I wash it and lots of cloudy water comes out. it's a very healthy food so if you can make it taste better it's nice to have it in your menu rotation.
2 fascinating videos in one day! We are truly blessed for this weekend! One of the things I love most about the channel is your range of content, it really appeals to curiosity and learning.
I’ve had this Artisan brand of ‘add water to create a meal’ recipes in several different boxes and found that none of them were particularly appetising. I had strange beetroot/garlic aftertastes and agree with your review basically haha!
'I'M NOT TOASTING IT COS I DON'T WANNA TOASTED BUN' lmao you sounded so angry Mike XD
Lol. No, just a tiny bit of annoyance remembering the last burger episode. Why do people assume I forgot something if I never intended to do it?
I'm an omnivore aswell and there's a few veggie / vegan stuff I like. My favourite burgers are the spicy veggie bean burgers. The cauliflower cheese one is fine aswell. I like the linda McCartney burgers and sausages. Xx
The Linda McCartney sausages are lovely. If they were gluten free, I'd probably have them every week.
The oven ones reminded me of cardboard papier-mâché and now I'm remembering the stale dried products flavour of similar mixes that were available before frozen meat-free burgers were available. Not my cup of tea either!
My mum makes a burger using canned chickpeas sometimes (a BBC good food recipe). They are crumbly like these, and flavoured with onion, lemon and cumin and are really quite good, excellent with piri piri sauce. I'd suggest you give them a go if it sounds appetising to you, by the sounds of it they'd be whole lot better than these :)
As an omnivore who likes to eat veggie sometimes, a spicy vegetarian burger I can recommend are the Naked Spicy Bean burgers. They do not have the same texture as a regular burger, but the flavour is really good. However, they are slightly expensive. (£2.75 for 2 at Tescos, sometimes on offer for £2.25).
I always find that cooked peanuts taste kind of stale/earthy. Maybe that's the source of the odd flavour. Thanks for the heads up!
It's YOUR kitchen/channel. Suit yourself and most of us will follow your content, happily.
Thank you for taking the time to upload this video.
I fall into the latter veggie burger category where I prefer patties that taste of vegetables but yeah most dry mixes have that stale cereal flavour because, well, they are dried cereals that have been stored for a long time.
Works quite well with falafel as it is chock full of onion and garlic and really strong aromatic spices. For burgers though I prefer fresh veggie patties with a chickpea base and Moroccan flavours as it turns out. Definitely a no on quinoa however.
Great video, keep them up, always great to see lots of different style of products tested.
One of the things in your videos that I really appreciate is the vocab you use. I had to check what does 'omnivore' stand for.
I always enjoy your content. Especially when it comes to vegetarian and vegan options. I feel that as I’m getting older, trying to find less meat options or just expanding my diet to things that I wouldn’t usually eat is important. Having somebody here tries these things and your commentary even if you don’t like it helps quite a bit because you will put it in a way that just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean that someone else shouldn’t try it.
"It smells less appetizing now that it is wet", for some reason you made me think of the smell of wet used socks or wet dog and I just laughed
I find dry dogs way more appetising as well.
@@robcio150
Try them....'hot', instead. 😉
Hey Mr shrimp, love the video as always! How is the ceremonial spoon coming along? Can't wait to see the next update. Inspired me to reclaim a log and start some axe carving myself, really enjoying it so far 👍
I prefer the burgers that aren't trying to emulate meat. Bean burgers are one of my favourite things 😋
Yes agree, the plant based ones are yuck, soy and bean burgers are tasty
I'm an omnivore and I really like bean burgers. For years it didn't even occur to me that they would be considered a vegetarian substitute, I thought of them as food that just happened to be vegetarian. Now I'm finding it harder to find bean burgers because the 'free-from' sections in my local supermarkets are full of fake meat burgers and no bean burgers
@@alittlebitofkatie l have exactly the same problem at supermarket and even independent shops
Same. I do enjoy some of the "fried chicken" style ones, but in general I find that almost all "beef style" burgers have a very similar taste and I really don't enjoy it. Pulled pork, Nacho burgers, and those cheap vegetable burgers are all fine. Even Nandosc vegetarian burgers are lovely! Just can't get over what I'm assuming is trying to taste like beef. I was very surprised when I tried one of the first "just like real beef" type products and I just tasted exactly like one of Linda's quarter pounders 😂
Mushroom burgers are great too. I had one at a cafe that was minced mushroom seasoned and grilled and it was amazing.
You should have deep fried them in lard... LOL
XD
Yeah o.O
Love these vids you do, love the ‘I don’t care’ comment when assembling the burger, bravo!
My wife likes trying things like the Vegie/Vegan burgers. Out of 8 or 9 of them I think 2 of them were fine. The others either tasted and smelled like stale bread or tasted like I was chewing on a garlic bulb. Always enjoy the videos and really appreciate you continuing to make content for RUclips.
Maybe you could do an energy saving week with a small food budget. It would be great for new ideas as you are fantástico for thinking out of the box.
Reminds me of "sosmix" which was a sausage mix very like this my mother used to make pies out of when we were poor as hell in the early 90s.
Made a very dry pie!
Hi! Jane here. It looks like something I used to get way back. I loved them. They had a great taste, but they were irritating my system, so I stopped. My favorite thing to do is make an egg fu yung type patty for my keto buns, when not making a meat burger. I really enjoy these product tests. And you assembled it just fine.
Yet another interesting video - I hope these keep coming!
One of our (sadly now defunct) local restaurants used to make a Moroccan turkey burger. They weren't vegan, obviously, but they were pretty darn good. They had bits of chopped apricot in them.
As a vegetarian I loathe these kinds of products. It has no protein in it and as such is functionally useless as a replacement for a burger in my opinion whilst also tasting not great and being too soft to give the burger any kind of contrast. I would honestly much rather just have salad in the bap at that point.
Where a product is designed to look like meat or replace meat, it should actually replace it. It makes it much harder for meat eaters who want to cut down to pick a good option that has a good chance of being satiating and is even worse for actual vegetarians who don't want to spend all their time looking at labels but still want a balanced diet.
@@KitchenWitchery They won't because they're not thinking about your health. They're thinking about the health of their pockets.

Dear Shrimp, thank you for yet another lovely review of a vegan product. I myself am an omnivore cutting back on meat, so those are both interesting and helpful.
As for this product - that's a shame, as the ingredients sound good and real. Had it been from many other reviewers, I would have thought it's just the regular vegan product bashing; But your reviews are always to be trusted. Many thanks again!
The correct way to assemble a burger is the way that looks, feels, and tastes the best to one's liking.
I’m America we have this brand called Boca burger, idk if you all have that or not, but where they fail as a meat substitute, like on a bun, dressed, etc, I LOVE them as a vegetable!!! I just put butter and salt on them and they are so yummy that way!!!
I had high hopes because getting her to try new things is at the very least a study in patience.
Depending on what region of the U.S. you grew up in, the way a burger is served is very different , which I found out when I first traveled from Texas (where lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle and mayo/mustard is standard) to Washington state (where you must request each addition) but as far as How one assemblies their own sammich being right or wrong is just another absurdity in a absurd happy world.
I wasn't aware there was a wrong way to build a burger, and I even flipped burgers a few years. Ya make it how ya want it!
The sweet chile one they did at the same time is slightly better but they definitely need something juicy to them I found topping them with fried mushrooms to the top helped
Try bacon grease.
Lol
Beef stock instead of boiling water
Or just beef
Try adding some beef mince to the patty
damn we got three geniuses with their clever lines all being unique and smart and also funny. Why are you so afraid of people eating things that aren't meat? It's kind of odd, really, like nobody here is even arguing against eating meat and you're still acting like this.
I found the texture was pretty poor, but the sweet chili flavour was really good and just about saved the day.
Thanks for the review. Love your honesty and you are always fair in your reviews even when the product isn't up to par. So you not liking this at all no matter how you cooked it, proved this isn't tasty at all. Old flip flop sounds more appetising hahaha. X
This summarizes your frozen dinners perfectly
The dry mix reminds me of the Sosmix which used to be a veggie staple in the 1980’s. Not seen the stuff for years but I remember it as being pretty good.
i remember sosmix so well...my dad used to make it for us and i remember it being really tasty.not seen it in many many years.
I remember that stuff. Last time I saw any was in Holland and Barretts. They were ok, but could go very dry, very quickly if you overcooked them.
There was a product called beanfeast as well, when my Safeway changed to Morrisons, it disappeared
I used to love Sosmix and Beanfeast, I've been trying to find a similar product to use for years.
We use to use Sosmix and Burgamix a lot back then; it was good stuff and I really enjoyed it even as a rampant meat eater.
Again, I have to say I appreciate that you give the answer in the thumbnail. Hats off to you.
it looks exactly like some falafel boxes in the US, just less green food coloring. great video!
Thank you for commenting for me :D
Yes, I thought the same and wondered if the ingredients were going to be mostly chickpeas.

Just a heads up in case anyone is considering trying a Macdonald's vegan burger: they're like the Linda McCartney burgers but wetter and with a huge amount of salt.
I remember when we went to burger king for the veggie bean burger as I think that was the only one available at the time years ago.
I've been on a hunt for veggie burgers myself (it's fun to try out different ones made out of ridiculous things) and so far the only one that I've liked was made from soy protein. But it was hella expensive. So it's fun to watch you go through these, you guys in the UK clearly have more options, and cheaper.
Edit: BTW the grossest veggie burger I've tried so far was made from lentils somehow
We've definitely improved our options. If you ever get a chance to try Mozzarella Burgers, particular Linda McCartney ones, don't hesitate. They're lovely.

@@peterclarke7240 Had no idea Mozzarella Burgers were a thing, would definitely try to find some
I would recommend experimenting with homemade lentil burgers, I made a good one a while ago by roughly processing some well-drained soaked but uncooked lentils with spring onion, minced garlic and a few random seasonings, with a bit of gram flour as a binder
@@100beps I reckon homemade is always the best, especially if you don’t try to imitate meat. I’ve had delicious homemade lentil and beetroot burgers, tofu burgers etc.
Personally I always cook the legume based burgers in a bit more oil than usual and definitely put sauces on them. or at least fried onions and mushrooms
I've found that these kind of dry mix burger/falafel type things seem to always have that fusty off taste to them.
Only just found the wittiest ever Shrimpiness.... 2 fantastic (mis) quotes seconds apart.... if you think I am building this wrong, I don't care..... ketchup helps = tastes of ketchup. I like the idea. Saw a video on McDonald's in India, they had vegan burger styled sandwiches made out of chickpeas that looked good.
I think the way you assembled that burger was just right. Pretty much how I would have done it haha
Im going to look out for this and try it. I am vegetarian because of all the usual reasons but mainly because i do not like meat at all. I am always on the look out for veggie products that do not attempt to replicate meat. If a vege burger is too 'meaty' - especailly in texture, then I dont like it! I would also put a beaten egg in the mixture to help bind it together a bit better.
I am totally on, when you talk about the consept: vegie burger, not like meat, but tastey.
I don't want a fish burger to taste like beef, just to taste delicious.
Why would I want vegie burger to taste like beef. I don't mind if they resemble, but my main target is for them to be tastey.
I mean one of my favorite summer meals is salmon pattie on rye. Basically salmon+bread crumbs and onions formed into a patty, pan fried and used in lieau of a burger. Tarter sauce, cucumber sauce (greek tzitziki) and other burger toppings = delicious
Some people want them as a replacement for beef burgers because they miss them but still want to be vegan/vegetarian
@@djdrack4681 Oh my goodness, when I saw the burgers he cooked up, I started salivating for salmon patties myself. My recipe is salmon, an egg, and a half and half mixture of flour and corn meal to get it to the right consistency. Salt and pepper to taste then fry them until crispy. I usually don't even have them with anything, just straight up eat them as it. They are so good!
@@jaybee4118 of course making them taste and feel, to replace the meat alternativ is important to some people, however I argue that it's even more important to make them tasteful than to vaguely resemble meat.
Kind of like a test of different spread for bread. The taste criteria was ranked 1 to 10, where 10 was "tastes like butter", as if that is the only ultimate taste for spread. If you want to replace butter, resembling butter is important, otherwise it is just important to taste good. And the taste score actually reflected butter content, where 70% butter scored 7-10, and 30% butter scored 3-6. Of course high butter content tastes more like butter, but is it better?
If you want a direct meat replacement, of course you want your veggie burger to taste and feel more or less like meat, but there are other tastes and textures that can be just as delicious, they are just different.
well, they can't all be winners. thanks for checking out all these vegan and vegetarian alternative products!
Remember a similar product in 80s from Holland and barrats, use to make, pin wheels, with it and cheese roll up up and baked.
Ketchup, the culinary duct tape
how about a video about convenience food/mixes that are specifically british/versions of traditional british food? I would bevery interested
Consider doing this again but add herbs spices and other things to the mix and slightly less water to make it taste better maybe even replace the water with stock
A new one for you to try Richmond BBQ sauce flavour meat free sausages, just cooking them now for my breakfast. I’m not vegan or veggie either but like to reduce the amount of meat I eat so really enjoy your reviews, thanks.
Yum, saw dust.
If you ever go to Sweden you should try Max's plant beef burger. At times I prefer it over their regular beef ones 😋
Being vegan for years now.. I tried a similar product here in Canada at one point. To be honest I would sooner make them fresh at home then use the packaged one I agree with you they have a weird stale bread bad stuffing kind of taste that's hard to get passed. Very fun to see you try these types of products though...lol...even if some are really bad like those burgers definitely shows that you like a challenge. Keep up the wonderful content!
Completely unrelated to the subject of the video, but that's a really nice looking keyboard you've got. I love the colours.
Kinda makes me want to try a stuffing based version of this . Maybe I'll make the stuffing a couple ways, one using added herbs and one added herbs and some kinds of ground meat. Also gonna assemble the exact way you did as that seemed yummy. It will probably take some attempts to get it right. But I think you inadvertently gave a genius idea when you described the packet... LMAO
Box stuffing makes a great base for salmon patties and crab cakes, I guess it would be ok without the meat.
@@cmdrbudman1ao580 I think that's why I preferred the meat version. I used broccoli and whatnot for the non meat but I need to try other stuff I think. I used ground pork and ground sausage and stuffing a third each and it was outstanding.
Yep. You saved me once again from wasting money and I'm on a very tight budget right now, so thank you!!
Do any of the Manufacturers ever reach out to you after a video like this for additional feedback? Or perhaps to guide you towards additional product offerings?
I was vegetarian for a while because it was helpful for a medical condition I had which has since resolved but I found that it eventually made things worse because these packed foods were always so dry and Quorn type foods all started to taste of mushroom to me so I stopped eating all together. Not good when blood sugar drops are the problem.
This looks like a stuffing mix, which based on the ingredients it basically is. You could use any kind of stuffing mix and prepare it in this way, although some may be a bit less appetising as a burger.
I thought about using my homemade stuffing like this, before remembering that using egg and sausage meat kind of defeats the purpose.
It seems like a simple, seasoned portobello cap still remains the optimal burger replacement for me, if I ever go vegan. Thanks for sharing.
I make nut roasts with this brand adding nuts and cranberry sauce on top before shoving it in the oven.
I got some pork shanks in a sweet balsamic sauce room Lidl was only cheap but turned out really quite nice
Hola Shrimp! So happy to find a place where the omnivores are representin'! I became an omnivore around age 7 when on family hamburger night I'd always load up my bun with condiments and lettuce, tomato, pickle, etc and leave the beef burger on the side of my plate, despite much family ridicule. Much later I realized it was because my mother cooked the living daylights out of those hockey pucks, and now I love a juicy burger or steak, but also love cheese, pb&j, bean burritos, or a good veggie burger. Have you read The Omnivore's Dilemma?
This could easily be "Weird Stuff in a Box".
My daughter cooked some of these (different variety) and I thought they were delicious. I found they had a nice chewy/nutty texture. I'm not vegan/vegitarian, so there is no need for vegetable based products to taste like meat. The same brand do some lovely falafels too.
Thank you for the video!
I wonder what stuffing (from a stuffing mix) burger would be like. Or stuffing with some hot pork and some apple sauce might be good.
I've seen these type of kits in LIDL before and your video showed them to be about what I expected. It was telling that you needed ketchup, a bit of cheddar and even pickle to improve/enhance the flavour, but it didn't work.
*hide* the flavor
I think if you slice them horizontally after frying and if you fry them in a flavourful oil they'll be more pleasant. The thinner burgers will have more browning surface area and the oil will give the burgers a better flavour. I'm not sure though
Do you have the "rice" made from oats where you live? I love it! Tastes wonderful and is just wonderful. Or maybe I was just brought up with oats for breakfast, and I still love the taste.
My mother was also brought up on oats and she hated it, really hated it as a grown up woman and mother. She still made it for us :-D
Barley used for porridge is hard work, but very tasty (in my mouth) and you can serve it cold if there are leftovers, with golden syrup(?). Tasty stuff! Or just with your lingonberry jam. You as one does... ;-)
See I liked porridge in camp where they put cream on the top but at home having it throughout winter it didn't feel special it was probably the same porridge as well.
I used to have something called sauso/ soso mix and burger mix made from soy that used to actually be kind of meaty and filling.
The sausages tasted meaty as well. I have not been able to find it for years now
Oh I love your keyboard :)
Could be the quinoa, if it was not washed before grinding, quinoa has a musty smell, you are probably absolutely right. Also I think a lot of energy is used to cook some vegetarian foods which do not make them viable for lots of people.
Yes I've tried quinoa, not keen on it
@@nige3801
Quinoa upsets my stomach.
I use quinoa, but I rinse it throughly in a fine sieve, then I spread it out to dry before cooking. To cook it, I heat a tiny bit if olive oil with spices then I add the quinoa I stir to make the grains hot then add hot water to a cm over the grains then cook on low preassure for four minutes then leave closed to use the residual heat. I open and remove when the preassure has gone.
Cheers from Morocco :)
To be fair it looked like trash in the serving suggestion picture too so at least they gave fair warning lol

I was wondering myself, due to your comment at the beginning, it looks like stuffing mix, I wonder if you could make stuffing burgers. 🤪
I dunno if it’s available where you are, but the incredible burger is quite good. Maybe look for those. They are quite satisfactory.
i have never had a processed veggie burger that i like. I make my own spicy black bean burgers that are really good
