    OK so I know this might not be something that every camper ponders but this was in fact very informative and helpful! I recently had the same dilemma, I wanted something small and practical I could carry some simple spices in so I started the quest as well. I eventually went with the same thing, the MSR Salt and Pepper shaker! It's great, loved it, one small issue was that the holes were too small for some of the other spices I wanted to bring. I love Roasted Garlic and Red Pepper blend of spice, I put that schit on everything. But the holes were way too small. Here is where this video helped! I did not know they also made the "Spice" shaker with bigger holes! OK So I ordered it, have not gotten it yet so I can't testify that it will be good for my particular spice but judging from this video, it looks promising, at least better than any other option I have found.
    Thank you Milo for a great video, I have subscribed to your channel!

    Thanks for the videos. I have been watching and enjoying them.
    I wouldn't have thought there was all that much to something like a spice shaker for camping. I was just going to go with Coghlan's salt & pepper shakers off of Amazon (or Walmart if I saw them there). I will try both and see which one I like better.
    Again, thanks.

      I had the Coghlan shaker as well as the GSI (the worst). The Coghlan was very similar to the GSI in that the tops cracked after very little time. I then got the Outbound shaker which I liked but I lost the dam thing and when I went to get a new one, MEC was not selling them anymore and I didn't see anything there I liked so I ordered the MSR from Amazon and (see above review) I am happy with them ;)

    I have that double compartment shaker, it's really neat, however, despite having grains of rice inside (to absorb moisture) the dispensing holes get dirty with spice (more with salt than pepper) and opening them with one finger becomes impossible, I often end up holding it with both hands (one hand presses the lid, so it doesn't fall off) and open it on something I have around, like a table top. It jams really, really badly. Other than that it's really great.

    • @milotash
      @milotash  Год назад

      Ufda, I’m sorry you’re getting some humidity issues with the shaker! I feel you when it becomes a harder open. I’ve also used the table top for opening it when it gets a bit harder to open. That or you have to have a thick nail which I’ve never been brave though to open even my pop cans with a nail only. Nice perspective and thanks for the comment!

    I actually wouldn't mind the 6-spice container that sells pretty much everywhere for $5-$10, depending on how poor of a shopper you are. I'd be okay with the size because I took my father's out for a test drive on my last trip to the Rockies, and it's nice to be able to handle your shaker like a shaker. But it apparently cannot be refilled. I saw a video of someone refilling one, and you basically have to run a screwdriver around the inside of the cap to pry it off. That's not going to work too many times before the lid becomes loose, spices start creeping out of the top and you have to trash the thing, but maybe the limited number of times you'll have to actually do this makes it worth it.
    But I'm ALSO someone who, when thinking about it, doesn't need 6 spices. I would probably just go with seasoned salt and pepper, but I'd like to add a couple. One should probably should be regular salt, but I mostly rehydrate and there aren't many meals I eat when camping/hiking that will be ruined by my salt having garlic powder, onion powder, etc., in it. Unless there's something I'm just not thinking of, if I get another 2-spice container I might just make one spice an additional seasoned salt and the fourth BRAGG Organic Sprinkle 24 Herbs & Spices or a Mrs. Dash option for a no-salt alternative. If you haven't tried BRAGG (they make that apple cider vinegar you see all over), where original Mrs. Dash tends to smell like chicken noodle soup spices, BRAGG smells like Thanksgiving stuffing spices. OR, I can always use Lemon Pepper (seriously, it's making a comeback) in one slot, although that's more of something you use when cooking, rather than to season with AFTER cooking.
    I currently have a two-spice shaker that I love (Coghlans camper salt & pepper shaker) that is no longer available. It's got much better volume than those tiny little red-capped jobbies they currently make and the lids have a nice snap to them. Plus they measure only 2.5" h x 1.5" w. I'd just get a second one if I could do it for less than the $10-$15 it's now going for on eBay (for a $1.99, small plastic tower). The multi-shakers on Amazon tend to be about 3-4" tall. Even the 6-spice jobbie is generally smaller than that. The MSR ones look to be about 3.5"-4" long and cost $9 apiece. Given how much I like the one i have, that product just seems like a bit much in multiple ways. It IS a little amazing that there aren't as many options on Amazon as a person might think. I may have to check AliExpress. I'm sure there's a knock-off or two there that might be of interest. :)
    Take care.

      Good thoughts! I just continue to be fascinated by how folks feel so differently on such a seemingly simple object. Some people are fine with their cardboard salt and pepper shakers, others in a zip lock bag, and some in little plastic contraptions. Interesting to see the diversity in opinions!
      Happy trails!

    I have the Wildo spice shaker. It has 3 compartments, a very hard to remove refill lid xD, and can "leak" some spices if it's something super finely ground, but overall I like it! It has no rubber so nothing to go bad in that regard.. Aaand of course it's orange so it fits with all my other orange items

    I favor a single plastic empty spice container. Inside, I've formulated an all purpose seasoning. Think homemade creole with my own twist. Works great on meats, soups, veggies. I control the salt percentage, as opposed to buying a creole seasoning. Salt, pepper, garlic, onion, cumin, rosemary, paprika powders as a base. Cayenne as needed. I get very few comaints.

    Every bit of GSI I’ve had has failed. The MSR look really cool but the lids look like a weak point. I use Nalgene bottles and jars for everything from cleaning to cooking stuff. I’ve never had a failure or leak and they are only a couple of bucks. They’re nothing fancy just well made and tough.

    • @milotash
      @milotash  Год назад +1

      The Nalgene screw tops are consistent and seem to carry their own very well, I agree. I've had a few that do the job for small instant coffee / Dandy Blend canisters that are the size of a Tic Tac box that I love. Can't complain one bit. Thanks for sharing Warwick.
