- Welcome to a different kind of video for the channel! In today's upload, we'll head for the sky and take an arial tour of Progress Rail's Mayfield, Kentucky shops. As you'll soon find out, this facility was full of rare locomotives, some I haven't seen in years, and some I'd never seen until now! Enjoy!

Your knowledge of locomotives is impressive!
Nice find and thanx for taking us there.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this. I count 10 SD70T-4s in yellow plus three more in different paint. Not exactly a ringing endorsement of a new locomotive.
Thanks so much for watching! Yeah, as far as I know, they did not satisfy the few railroads that bought them.
I’m curious about the common issue with the locomotives? They seem to be a very solid design and extremely rugged. I’m not much of a diesel expert.
@@lawnmowermanTX they are mechanical nightmares. They’re utilization numbers were subpar when compared to other modern offerings
@@lawnmowermanTX I’m retired and never worked on one (and cannot recall ever seeing one in person). That said, let’s compare the progression paths. GE followed up Dash-8 line with the common framework for both the Dash-9 and AC4400. That basic framework has carried forward, with little alteration, to the ES series and later the ET series. EMD didn’t do that. The SD70 and SD70MAC had the same engine and that’s about it. When GE introduced the EVO-12 we knew the future for freight was a six-axle, AC transmission locomotive with a 12-cylinder prime mover in the 4000-ish hp range. EMD did test one with the SD89MAC test bed. But then they reverted back to the tried and true (and doomed) 710. Now they try to sell an SD70 that doesn’t have a 70-series engine under the hood. Locomotive market is down due to railroad management decisions. There is no critical mass of new SD70T-4s out there to refine the product. They are dealing with a confluence of bad circumstances.

I have seen only one of those yellow Progress locomotives come through my hometown. I live in central Minnesota off the BNSF line and that one was heading west.
I get flashbacks to that fateful day in December of 2021
Me too. That burrito didn't sit well. 🤢💩
I see PRLX is smart and has most of their horns removed so they won't be stolen..lol
I went there June 13th!, and I saw the other UP SD9043MAC gutted out before it got completely scrapped.
Cool 😎
Pretty fascinating!
4:07 is it just me or am I seeing a CP in the classic Heritage paint sitting at that yard?!
Yep my friend, it’s there for some work. I think it’s 7015.
@@joshthetrainfan I see. Thx for the info.
@@haaseshouseoscience6377 sure thing mate
I wonder if NS has any interest in taking those 70M-2s back, now that they've approved the SD70ICC conversions for the ones they still have.
I have heard that ferromex will be getting some but it’s unknown right now
Ferromex the Aerosucre of railroads. (Watch 3 min of Aviation and Aerosucre is the best entertainment of pilots violating safety rules in worn out cargo planes.. I don’t know Ferromex…
@@yeahman70no las que recibió no son sd70m-2 son sd70acu 👀
@@kevinoswaldofxe3817 I heard they were getting both SD70ACUs and SD70M-2s
@@yeahman70 también sd70m-2 para reconstrucción 👀
Hey man I checked out some of your music the other day and it’s amazing keep it up!
Thank you so much man, that means a lot!
@@WashingtonDistrictRailfan no problem!
Great video!
Thanks for watching!
Cool!
Wow, I counted 15 SD70ACe-T4'so in the dead line. Why didn'the these motors sell any better. I've they are good locomotives.
There is some renewed interest of the units in Canada, with CPKC currently performance testing 10 UP 70-T4 units and CN ordering an SD70H hybrid conversion, both of which could lead to orders
Those junk tier 4 SD70s didn't last long. CSX sent theirs back, and UP is now the sole buyer. I think it's safe to say that EMD is pretty much finished in the locomotive market.
It is still so odd seeing CSX YN3b locomotives patched out - it is shocking how quickly CSX grew tired of them.
what killed the tier 4 sales was the ability to rebuild a loco into a SD70ACC , SD70MACe, and the AC44C6M or C4M (either 4 or 6 traction motors)
What really killed EMD T-4 sales was the finicky engine and it’s control systems - we can’t keep them running.
@@ralfie8801 crazy thing is that engine been around a while old SD89’s from like 03-04, you think they woulda figured it out by now… or throw a GE engine under the hood 😅
Correct o mundo!!
Just waiting on the cutting torch.
Some of the cute switchers can be remanufactured to reliable quality standards. Would be sweet to go to an old roundhouse and find a group of young people men/women restoring the old locomotives, like young men did with old cars and trucks..
Young people watching RUclips videos on remanufacturing road locomotive diesel engines with tear down, and remanufacture procedures.
Nice video 👍🇺🇲
Thank you!
EMD is easier to rebuild because they make replacement parts while GEs rush new ones out the door because their older ones don’t last as long after 30 years and they cause fires and that’s not uncommon with theirs
0:57 espera las unidades de demostración sd70ace t4 de bnsf todavia extisten no puedo creerlo yo pensé que las desarmaron 👀
Was that on the other side of Mayfield when they had that killer tornado a few years ago?
Aww man I thought the SD70ACT4 where going to go to BNSF those engines are cool looking than the SD70ACE and GEVOs but I still would rather see a BNSF heritage locomotive GEVO in a ATSF warbonnet style and so as others if BNSF will ever do some heritage units for there 30th anniversary man already 30?? I thought it was 20 where has the time gone???
I would love to see heritage Santa Fe GEVO locomotives or better yet just dump the wedge logo and the black and orange and just become Santa Fe 2.0!
@@armandoperez7967 uhhh no because I also would like all of us preserved a ATSF dash 9 and a ATSF C40-8W just one
I see the core is of several Metra Passenger SD70MACH’s!
Are all these locomotives here to get scraped or are they here to get worked on or just getting rebuilt
Thanks, I have fun with my google earth lol
I really wished they can bring these all back to life!!!! Emds r awesome and love how they look. Just to bad they r wasting away. Bring back sd 45s!!!!
If you like SD45s, keep an eye out for my next video!
Sweet!!!!! I will for sure!!!
Did FXE return those SD70ACe-T4s?
These are still in service for FXE, but the ones seen there never came here.
@@Trainspotter3033 Ohhhhhh
What is that CP heritage doing there
🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂
I wonder what the real reason why they get rid of the locomotives so quickly? 🤔🤔🧐🧐🤨🤨😔😔
Clicked hoping to see EMD E's & F's; nope!
Sounds like those engines really need a remanufacturing facility and use reliable engine designs, diesel fuel delivery, crankshaft, pistons, rings, engine block enhancements as well as oil lubrication delivery.. I’m not 100% sure what the exact common detailed complaints were, but sounds like if the engines broke during warranty then it be recalled for engine design defect flaws. Caterpillar and Cummins used to make good reliable engines.
Sounds like too many penny pinching 🤏 nitpickers screwed up a cool looking locomotive for cutting corners on the bottom line. 😿😿😿😭😭😭🤕🤕
Turn down the music when you talk. You can't be heard over it.
There were 28 locomotives stored there. So what? You see more than that at CSX Waycross yard.
I don't think CSX has CP heritage units, unreleased BNSF T4 ACes, and 75 year old end cab switchers in Waycross 😝
