'Genius' is right. Super versatile and with the most absurdly wide ranging skill set. There's no one else like her. An incredible composer, above all, like a throwback songwriter starting by writing out notation for piano and really thoughtfully crafting interesting pieces of music.
good evening. I am a Japanese passing by. Thank you for telling me about my favorite singer Shiina Ringo. If you could understand Japanese, I think you would have been able to enjoy more of her inner life through her work. So I would like to give a Japanese explanation that she uses her works in. As for the characteristics of the language, the Japanese she uses is much older than the normal Japanese used by modern Japanese. For the above reasons, there are few Japanese who can understand her songs by listening. So she uses old Japanese. Japanese Estimated 500 Years Ago. Another thing is that she, Ringo Shiina, is said to be a rare conservative singer in Japan. During her performance, the audience carries the Japanese flag into the venue. It is also the navy flag of the former Imperial Japanese Army. Have you ever seen this flag? A flashy Japanese flag. Two points above. In other words, old Japanese and her audience are Japanese conservatives. Both are very rare in Japan. In addition, in Europe and America, requests for Shiina Ringo's debut are frequently sent to her agency, but they are not realized. Her band Tokyo Incidents is positive, but Shiina Ringo is not. The reason, she says, is that she doesn't like being busy. My two favorite singers are Ringo Shiina and Eikichi Yazawa. Please listen to Eikichi Yazawa.too. You can also listen to all of her works on Amazon Music on Amazon Prime. maybe this is only in japan.
I didn't know about her being a rare conservative or what the imperial Japanese flag was. I always saw it but never knew why it had those stripes. Thank you, that was very informative .👍
@@DavidSanchez-wq2dj Good morning David. First of all I would like to thank you for your interest in my post. The stripes on the national flag in your question are from the era when naval forces were the main force in wars around the world, and the imperial navy's battleships had poor fuel efficiency. About 150 years ago. The Japanese Navy had to refuel at allied refueling points, so the Imperial Navy's flag had to be flashy. Otherwise they may mistake the Imperial fleet for their enemy. This flashy, striped flag was never used in Japan except in war.
i remember reading some youtube comments about how a lot of koreans dislike sheena ringo performance, but like her music. apparently it's because the rising sun flag, even though it's just modified rising sun flag, with tokyo jihen symbol at its center
I see. The Rising Sun that Ringo Shiina loves is the military flag of the former Japanese Imperial Army. However, the current Korean peninsula. At that time, there was no historical background for North Korea to hate the Raising Sun. Well, in 1944, the Rising Sun was a symbol of communism, but China was a communist state, and both North and South Korea had been vassals of China for 1,000 years. In other words, when Chinese or Koreans see the Rising Sun, they react negatively, but they may have forgotten that Japan, China, and Korea have been communist countries for a longer period of time. . Changing the topic, in Japan we live in the times. The name of the current era is Reiwa. Before that was the Heisei era. Before that was the Showa era. The sounds created by Ringo Shiina are consciously reminiscent of the Showa era. In terms of the Western calendar, that's the sound from 1926 to 1989.
Omg I loveeeee Sheena Ringo!!! All throughout middle school until now, she has stayed on my playlist! She has a softness in her voice, a growl, she rolls her “r” sounds sometimes, I just love it!!!
I'm a music journalist and for me she is a GENIUS. One of the greatest artists of all time. It's funny because the way you found out about her work is the same as me, but it took me some years to find the song because i'm stupid and using Shazam never crossed my mind. Anyway, after checking 2016 Olympics' page on Wikipedia, i starting digging deep into her work as of 2019 and i never felt the same. She is the last music discovery that really rocked my art foundations. I'm still really amazed by her work and i can only feel sorry for not speaking Japanese (and also that i don't have many people to talk to about her 😑 )
I've always loved her. I discovered her music when I was in high-school and I'm 35 now so very formative years of my life, listening to her music brings on soo many emotions all at once on top of being very nostalgic. I didn't know Japanese but she always spoke to me regardless. I'm glad to see more people in the west being as touched by her in recent years. I hope she'll do a US tour
She’s just outstanding. I found her when Ado did a cover of her song ‘Crime and Punishment’, and from there she basically instantly became one of my favourite artists. I still don’t even think I’ve listened to all of her songs, she has so many! But my favourite is ‘A Driving Rain in Darkness’. I love the strings at the start and the marching feeling, and the cool guitar solo (the guitar and bass solos are always so sick. and as a bassist i especially appreciate those lines)
I have some of her DVD/Blurays (solo and with Tokyo Jihen) - she's one of the best live performer ever, if you like her very theatrical way of performing. She's a diva in th emost noble sense of the word. Oh, and I love her choice of guitars too (her blonde Gibson RD artist especially).
I adore her, I've been following her work both solo and with Tokyo Jihen since 2000/2001 when I was a preteen living in northern NJ and had a local TV station that showed Korean and Japanese rebroadcasted programming and got introduced to her through music videos and interviews from her first and second albums. Anytime I meet someone who knows her music in the US I get so excited. She's criminally under appreciated in the English speaking world, IMO.
Maybe you did since this video came out, but if not please listen to her 3rd solo album (2003) Kalk Samen Kuri No Hana (KSK). Her masterpiece which was compared by a Time magazine journalist as a mix between The Beatles' Sgt Pepper and Radiohead's Ok computer... And also try to find a whole concert like she did in the Expo series to celebrate her carreer's anniversaries 08, 14 and 18 or any concert with her band Tokyo Jihen (or Tokyo Incidents) They are all amazing ! Nice to see someone being aware of her genius It happened to me 15 years ago and it's been a journey ! 😄
It's interesting you mentioned that you can imagine a film based on her song - I recommend checking out the movie Sakuran (2007) if you haven't - the soundtrack of the film is based on her Heisei Fuuzoku album (which I still think is her best album to date)
love the video and love to see her music on this side of the world and actually, she composed a whole album for a movie xddd, the movie is called Sakuran and the album 平成風俗 (Heisei Fūzoku)
I love Tokyo Jihen, but there's no 2-CD compilation you could make from their entire discography that would be better than just choosing, as is, any 2 of Ringo's first 3 albums. As a composer she's on a whole other level to the boys, even if Izawa is consistently very good and the others certainly have their moments.

In my opinion, Tokyo Jihen (her band) is the pinnacle of her artistry. Their music definitely pays off.
I don't think the best of Tokyo Jihen tops any of the first 3 Ringo solo albums tbh. About the level of HF, SG, maybe Favor of Duty 1.

She's obscenely talented. Reminds me of Bjork a little.
that's actually the most accurate comparison ❤

Greatest musical artist in any culture in the last 10,000 years or so.

well said ~
She's basically Japanese Prince
Yep, Shiina is a genius
Flabbergasted that Carnival comes out and she's still not getting western coverage.
theres 2 people. people who like hikari utada and people who like sheena ringo
Hardly. Many, many like (love!) both, in my experience.
Omgg I stan both ❤ Although I wouldn’t know who Sheena is without Hikaru
Maestra.
Very crappy songs, I think you missed a huge opportunity to present her through Tokio Incidents.
