    What I love about this one in particular is that it was the whole COMMUNITY'S record that was achieved. This could have easily been a race to see which individual could get his total below 3 with a clashing competition, but instead they set a bounty to encourage everyone to make a push for a community-wide goal and celebrated everyone who participated. Fantastic story

    • @byugoi
      @byugoi 7 months ago +24

      @IgniriumIt seems logical since the longer a run is the more room there is for changes and mistakes. Some longer runs, like 120 star in mario 64 for example, aren't any easier than the shorter ones per se, but there's more potential for big time cuts (like carpetless), so when you're looking to lower the total number of frames across all runs, it really does make sense to attack the long ones first

    • @KelpTheGreat
      @KelpTheGreat 6 months ago +3

      TBF, that player was more likely trying to lower a particular record for just one character, not necessarily caring about the overall bounty.

    • @LendriMujina
      @LendriMujina 5 months ago +7

      @Ignirium Here's why the four longest times - all the ones over 10 seconds - weren't pursued.
      - The stage with the longest time, Dr. Mario, was the hardest and most complicated one on purpose; normal Mario is the character designed for people just learning the game, so he has an easy stage to match. But Dr. Mario is the stronger version of him, and his stage is meant to put your knowledge of the controls to the test.
      - The stage with the second-longest time, Ness, is because his stage is designed around his having very strange controls and the ability to attack remotely.
      - The third longest time, Kirby, is... partially just because Kirby is terrible in Melee and he doesn't have much potential to work with, but also, he can move great distances (which his stage is built around) but not very fast.
      - The fourth longest time was the Ice Climbers. Or, rather, just Popo. When the Ice Climbers are separated, their attacking potential and mobility are greatly reduced. Popo is *always* alone during Target Test because the stage mimics the original game. Even though that record was greatly reduced later, there was reason to believe the early cloud strategy making that possible was suspected to be TAS-only before then.

    • @Ignirium
      @Ignirium 5 months ago +4

      @LendriMujina Another factor i notice in subjects that have very high amounts of knowledge, is how "a high amount of knowledge and understanding" can cause a tendency of a person to avoid looking into specific things while checking, because they know so much about it so certain things appear safe to ignore. Sounds like ice climbers was like that; the belief of their own knowledge and understanding caused them to overlook some key details. I think this happens in many fields and probably is a bias with its own name, idk.

Your videos have plot development and character development and the "x frames to go" is a great way to keep the audience invested throughout the video and feel like they too are part of the journey you mentioned at the end. Great video! 🔥 😊

  • @RiskierGoose340
    @RiskierGoose340 7 months ago +577

    36:04 For those unaware, Hanky Panky is more than just a competitive Peach Main; Hanky Panky is a very highly skilled player who wins pretty much every tournament he enters. The thing is, he *only* enters tournaments that he knows he can win, purely for the money. Unlike most other top players, who travel to majors and supermajors to compete with the very best, Hanky Panky pretty much exclusively plays tournaments near where he lives, so he almost never has any real competition. Even more interestingly, the very few times he has competed against some of the best players in the world, he’s actually done very well, beating a decent number of well known pros. His unconventional competitive history is strong enough to have many player ranking systems rank Hanky Panky extremely highly, like, top 10 player high, despite very rarely actually playing against other top 10 players, or top 50 for that matter.
    Basically, he’s not interesting just because he always wins tournaments; it’s how he wins tournaments.

      @KarmaKomet It's not that he's actually top 10, it's that ranking systems which assume you can't pick your opponents will, when applied to a game like Melee where you do have that control, incorrectly rank him in the top 5-10 because they don't know how to handle a player who doesn't play the best players but also doesn't lose against the people he faces.

And everyone's excitement at the end was so lovely to see!

    • @Papupi2pi
      @Papupi2pi 7 months ago +8

      At 36:19 he mentions the TAS for peach. There probably is a TAS for every level that shows how many frames could be saved, but it just wasn't what he wanted to focus the story around

    • @JaggerG
      @JaggerG 6 months ago +5

      @Papupi2pi that, and probably also TASes have a tendency to get dismissed as nonviable for years and years. It makes sense as a logical approach from the outside, but a top level runner often just isn't ready to consider stuff. Frankly, I'm surprised the Peach saber strat had ever seriously been considered.

    huge thank you for providing the photosensitive warning!! as someone with epilepsy this is one of the most frustrating things about watching videos, and it is very nice to have a youtuber who consistently and explicitly labels potential issues. thank you!!

      Honestly, i'm so surprised RUclips doesn't have automated warnings when processing videos. It feels like such a simple thing for them to implement.

      Except this wasn't anywhere near epilepsy triggering. You'd know but you skipped it and now just wildly believe it saved you, when in reality there were no danger.

    One of my favourite video essays on RUclips is the old Peach BTT video by PTAS, I’m so glad to see the goat visit it

    I still unironically have several VHS movies on my shelf that I bought back during the rad 90's. This retro aesthetic VHS product offering really emphasized the grey in my bush for me. Cool, cool..

    I love how Pikachu’s record was the one that ended the bounty. Seeing the optimization of the record due to one move was amazing!
    Kudos to the runners, you all changed melee for the best!

    Dude I almost NEVER get RUclipsr merch, but as soon as I saw the VHS and how absolutely perfect your videos are for the format I legit had to. Unironically I might buy every single one you make
    Your vids are like the best comfort food videos I love them so much
