How Psilocybin Mushrooms Can Help Save the World with Paul Stamets | SXSW 2023

  • Join Mycologist Paul Stamets, co-founder of MycoMedical Life Sciences, as he speaks of their historical use of psilocybin mushrooms and explores the potential for neurological health based, in part, on recent results on molecular modes of action his team has discovered.
The recent upsurge in interest in psilocybin mushrooms by the scientific community is attributable to their long use in history, their widespread use today, and the increasing number of clinical studies validating psilocybin as a breakthrough medicine. What is not yet well elucidated is the efficacy of microdosing and the mechanisms of action for neurogenesis and neurogeneration.
Paul published his first book on psilocybin mushrooms 45 years ago, and five since. He leads a team who are uniquely positioned to develop new compositions and methods for helping human health with these powerful, ancient medicines. Clinical trials are being planned to test his theories, based, in part, on the 3 composition patents recently awarded to Paul on his psilocybin discoveries.

I'm a veteran, was actually addicted to alcohol and cigarettes. I suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Got diagnosed with cptsd. Not until my wife recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 8 years totally clean. Never thought I would be saying this about mushrooms.

I wish they were readily available in my place. Microdosing was my next plan of care for my husband. He is 59 & has so many mental health issues plus probable CTE & a TBI that left him in a coma 8 days. It's too late now I had to get a TPO as he's 6'6 300+ pound homicidal maniac. I was horrifically depressed since childhood. It was relentless. I assumed it would ultimately end me somehow. About twelve years ago I randomly accepted the offer from a friend of a few doses of mushrooms. I did them two consecutive nights alone. First night was pretty mild. The second night? Wow. I saw my depression from every angle, realized much. Next day: depression totally gone. Never came back, never coming back. It's like it's a forest far away I can remember, and could probably find again with enough effort, but it has zero impact on anything in my life or mind. They honestly saved my life and improved it immensely. I never did them again, either. I wish there was a good, organized way to administer them to people who would benefit from them.

“Psychedelics are illegal not because a loving government is concerned that you may jump out of a third story window. The initial story about someone jumping from a window on psychedelics all comes from a lie. During MK Ultra, the CIA had dosed someone with an extremely high dose and they traumatized/tortured them until they freaked out enough to want to un-alive themselves. The story was twisted to give credence to the drug war, especially against psychedelics.
This is not to say that people haven't jumped from tall buildings on psychedelics, but I highly doubt it's because they thought they could fly. It's because they were depressed and going through a very tough and traumatic mental episode, and wanted to just end it.
If they want to ban psychedelics because it causes people with severe depression to hurt themselves, then sure, go ahead. But you know what the worst offender in that same vein and has killed far more people(just in the way I described)? Alcohol. They should treat alcohol as a schedule 1 if they're going to decide to ban any drug.
We tried that though, and that's when we learned that prohibition never works. And it only helps to prop up organized crime and corrupt politicians, police, and corporations.

I agree, he's a wonderful human, and even though he most certainly started off as a good person, the reason for his calm, passion, altruism, enanched intelligence and on and on, are the result of his several psylocibin trips. As an active user of psychedelics, I can say without the shadow of a doubt, that if everyone on earth had to go through initiation with psylocibin, or "similar" natural substances of which there are many, the world would be a much better place, as these plants not only introduce us to a different plane of reality, they also lower our egoic needs by showing us what is really important, being the journey within, as "the dead don't have pockets", the only thing you bring with you in your afterlife is your experience, everything material is for the surviving family to fight over 😉. This of course doesn't mean we have to live in a cave like savages, but that we would be much better off collaborating with each other instead of fighting. I hope you all get my point without the need for me to go on with rhetoric, and I close by reminding you that the vast majority of ancient people had initiation rituals involving psychedelics, and those cultures that survived western religious bigotry either still practice them, or at least keep treating their sacred plant as such, surely if it wasn't important the tradition would have died off long ago, and if it wasn't so meaningful it wouldn't be praised by everyone who tries it.

Psilocybin mushrooms changed my life. They are unimaginably powerful though, so I would caution anyone who is curious to do a lot of research before dabbling.
If you aren't ready to "download" that much information, and you fight the experience, you can absolutely traumatise yourself or even suffer a psychotic break. They demand complete and utter respect and humility. This might sound like hyperbole to anyone who hasn't had this experience. It might sound like a dramatic metaphor, but I promise you... It's probably the most mind blowing experience it's possible to have in life. I've had near death experiences and watched my son being born, and those experiences are like a grain of sand at the foot of the mountain that is a breakthrough mushroom trip.

I had my first experience 25 years ago and it changed my whole life. I was very materialistic. During my experience I realized that materialism keeps you trapped in the world that our rulers want to keep us as slaves. It showed me that I had to let go of materialism and reconnect with my subconscious and with nature, my environment and with like-minded people. Since this experience I have become the complete opposite of who I used to be. I live completely on feeling and intuition. This has always shown me the right path. In the meantime I have had many new experiences with these fruits of the earth. The moment of the pandemic they showed me very clearly that this was going to be the toughest test for humanity. In retrospect, I made the right decisions and preparations to get through these difficult times as best as possible.
I recommend anyone who is psychologically strong enough to go through such an experience. Don't do it for fun but to learn something from it!❤🍄❤

When you say 'honesty', I view that as being connected with your authentic self (aka inner child, etc). If a person is not connected with their authentic self, shrooms amplify where the person is at, meaning they will become even more disconnected from their authentic self with negative separating emotions like fear. Shrooms can have either a negative or positive effect depending on if the person is advanced enough or ready to connect to their authentic self. Shrooms by themselves do not automatically connect a person to their authentic self, they have to make a choice to do so before hand. People who have very strong inner childs/very connected to their authentic selves have the most powerful shroom experiences/effects.

On my first and most intense trip so far I received very clear messages to 'keep some things 'private'', even requesting that I do not try to convince people who are not ready to do shrooms. I am a very open, sharing, transparent person, but it was very surprising to me the shrooms wanted me to keep my experience to myself for the most part. The voice/messages were very clear and explained why this is the case.......mostly because mushrooms can pick people who are ready, are running the show (globally), and this process of people voluntarily using shrooms to grow must be entirely based on that person being ready and coming to that point on their own. Of course its ok to educate people, but do not try to co-erce or pressure anyone, especially those traumatized and need it most, to do shrooms until they are fully ready. It even explained that it was telling me this specifically because it wants to give me a very powerful healing experience that it knows I will want to share with the world, but it doesn't want me to do so in the way that I want to do so. In a way, it basically wants me to keep it a 'secret' to a certain extent, not to keep it from people, but to let the mushrooms do their work with everyone in the way they need to. It also means the people it does pick, are very special and fortunate, the most powerful gift available in this part of our universe (I'm not kidding or joking). It also told me shrooms are of alien origin and did not originate on Earth (not alien beings necessarilly, it does not explain this).....and no I am not tripping and 100% sincerely believe my experience is real, the most beautiful connected experience I have had since being in utero in which ALL fear of abandonment is gone.

I believe what is happening in the brains of people working with the mushrooms is similar to what happens with consistent, repetitive meditation. Which is exciting because if you know the things his students are experiencing with their meditations (spontaneous healings, etc.) then I wonder what's possible for people working with these mushrooms with the intention to heal.

Listening to this wonderful man who doesn't know me, now that the holy mushrooms have given me a new life, is strangely satisfying. I am living proof of everything he is narrating in this lecture. Thank you Mr. Stamets for introducing this medicine to me and perhaps more inportantly, thank you to Joe Rogan for having introduced Paul Stamets to me. Life is good and God is great. Bless you all.

@raymondscott8689 I'm good, man. And be careful, the enemy is always listening in. And yes, the ones trying to suppress this medicine are enemies of the human race. They will be crushed eventually.

I can't find a source anywhere for any good psychedelics in my area, I suffer some pretty bad depression and i got a chance to try K and man it was a miracle substance, I felt free, the only high or euphoria was from the relief of my vices being released, that's exactly what it did

You can't really imagine what being on a high dose of mushrooms is like until you do it. I mean there's beauty in the world, sure, but all the artists who have ever lived would struggle to create something quite so magical as psilocin and it's effects on us. If you're curious and you get the opportunity to try it in a safe environment, then do it. You won't regret it.

I carry too much baggage to have a full blown trip these days. But after being prescribed a couple of things for anxiety and stress and being repulsed by the side effects, I decided to to try microdosing. It's been several months steady. Well below the threshold of visuals and any abstract thoughts, but a pleasant body high, a bit of energy, and a mild mood boost. The jury is still out. It wasn't the magic bullet I was hoping for. Contemplating discontinuing. It may just not be for me.
