Code Geass R2: Checkmate - Extra Detailed TL Notes Edition

TL Note: Schneizel just made an illegal move in chess, so it doesn't make sense that he could say checkmate, he might possibly say check but the use of the term here is wrong. The only way this could be a legal move is if this were blitz chess, also known as "Fast Chess". However, in this scene, it is never declared they are playing "Fast Chess", and neither of the players are using clocks to time their turns in the game. (Source: /a/)
TL Note 2: The reason why Schneizel did this is because the game was going to turn into a threefold rep. By pulling this illegal move, he is able to gain insight into Zero's personality, and "un-mask" part of him, thus fulfilling his victory condition in a subtle and Schneizel-ish manner. To look at the picture more properly, think of the chess board not as a game but as a battlefield. Zero's other options were to take his King, which would have made him similar to his father, or to call Schneizel out on making an illegal move, which would have made Zero look dumb since "lol rules of war". What Zero chose to do was keep his pride and run away from a free victory. Furthermore, by placing his King behind a pawn instead of any other open tile, Zero symbolically shows cowardice.
TL Note 3: Alternatively read like this: [aers | laptop] Well personally I think the symbolism in Schneizel moving his king is that he wants to be buddy-buddy with Zero. And that Zero moving behind the pawn is because he is afraid of Schneizel's advances. (Geass is about yaoi and shit, so the likelihood of aers being correct is somewhere over 9000.)
TL Note 4: This scene is interesting because it raises the question of whether or not Schneizel "plays dirty" in bed with Canon. :3 - Спорт
Judging by Schneizel's knowledge of the rules of chess, if he was capable of beating Lelouch 8 years ago, Lelouch must have been really, really bad at chess.
HAHAHAHA
He's knowingly breaking the rules here my dude.
The chess here is not real chess, it's a metaphorical clash between Schneizel and Lelouch.

@@lFakundo9999 we can say both Player doesn't know the rules of chess.
The chess speaks for itself. The beads must have vibrated so hard that Schneizel was unable to control his movement and directly put his king in front of Lelouch's king.
Schneizel did a double illegal move: 1 - A King can't stood an adjacent tile near to the opponent's King for obvious reasons; 2 - Schneizel moved his King into Lelouch's pawn's capture zone, putting it in check.
I believe the game was already ended in a draw, Schnitzel was fooling around.
Even if he did not and made it as a legit move, Britannian chess might not have that rule and instead allowing the king to be captured. That would certainly seem like something Britannia could do when you think about where the rules about capturing the king being illegal comes from.
Instead you should complain about pieces magically appearing and disappearing and both players playing like morons.

@@MrJimmyist did you miss the fact that Lelouch is prideful and theatrical, and repeatedly chooses less than optimal options for these reasons?
did u even get the symbolism? TL note there is no rules in war. lol
The way I see it, and Lelouch brings it up again when he meets Schneizel for the last time -- Schneizel was always willing to sacrifice his own kingdom for his own purposes. Him getting rid of the "king" in the chess board was only to see what Lelouch would do in reality, as he wanted to know what kind of person was behind the mask. Lelouch knew that Schneizel was testing him with that move, so he retreated -- basically avoiding conflict with Britannia and the Chinese Federation at that moment; had he taken the king, Schneizel would most likely had his guards fire on Zero instead (and not give over Suzaku). Lelouch realized that, so he backed off -- which Schneizel found amusing, and hence backed off too. Schneizel probably would have enjoyed seeing bloodshed, as he didn't care -- and that's why Lelouch got upset at him; Schneizel is always looking down on everyone -- he doesn't care so long as he gets his desired outcome -- which was to force everyone into slavery and rule from top when all the dust settled. That's why he came up with the Fleija plan too, he had no concern for human life, everyone was expendable, it was always about control. I guess the chess game is symbolism -- Lelouch is ready to protect his people/kingdom, while Schneizel is ready to dispose of his people/kingdom -- both for the sake of winning.
That's also why he planned to self destruct the bombs with Nunally still there.
2:17 Wait. That's illegal.

The explination of this move is quite easy to understand. Schniezel is somebody who wants victory. In this scene there is a draw game between the two players. This is why Schneizel concede to Zero, but he gives to Zero a victory by his own choice. Zero can't take this easy win, because it's a victory gives by Schneizel from his own. Zero makes miracle and brings victory against opponents stronger than him. But now it's not a spectacular victory. Lelouch goes back because Zero's personnality can't just take victory and results without miracle.
Illegal move.

The king move was illegal (lol), and nobody should ever bring their king out until the endgame unless there are special circumstances. Also, the bishop move G2-F3 at 1:47 was pointless, it gained literally no new useful squares to attack and no tempo. *Edit, How did he get a pawn on his kingside when clearly there was none before?
zepeterinma different world, dofferent chess
Bryce Richardson nope the animators just got lazy these moves would make sense if the pieces moved differently which they don't
No, if you're gonna use chess as a pretentious tool to portray the "intelect" of your characters at least follow the rules.
You should defiantly bring out your king in the endgame. Basic theory.

2:17 It's a bit illegal
Code Geass treats actual chess much like Yu-gi-oh treats actual Yu-gi-oh.
Basically
The match was going to end in a draw.
- Schneizel instead of letting it end that way , did a mind game and pulled an illegal move by offering his King to Lelouch, thereby offering to let Lelouch win.
- Lelouch's mindset : if he takes the win it would subconsciously looks like he is "taking Schneizel's offer" and would look like a sign of submission.
- instead of taking the win, Lelouch moves his king away instead out of pride.
So instead of ending it in a draw, at least Schneizel learned something about Zero's personality by comparing it with the Emperor's.
To Lelouch's dismay of course.
Ah yes, the infamous “king’s gambit”
2:10 chexkmating yourself is illegal in chess

I would allowed the Pawn to take the king and thus allow the Subordinate to claim victory.
And we transpose in the kings sacrifice declined
*down a million points of material*
"They're evenly matched!"
2:46 シャルル「わーい!」
I think the point of this is that if Zero's king took the white king, then Zero's 'pawns' would take him - kind of foreshadowing the ending
This is such a Shneizel move.
It was auto loss for schnizel regardless of zero's next move because the king and the pawn were hitting the wht king so he couldn't avoid it in just 1 move.
l saw the move as resigning just to disrespect the thought that they were in the same level, schniezel preferred to throw the game in an outlandish way. Eventhough Zero won, his pride was damaged.
I mean no way that should have happened since schniezel had so many more pieces and the fact zero pulled a pawn out of his ass since it wasn't there at 1:47
This is a right state
lets just say that they change the rule of chess in this anime
Rules aside.
Lelouch should've gone for it. He'll get Suzaku and will give his brother a false info about himself. It's a winning situation, but no, he chose his ego over it.
I don't know if Schneizel was going to respect the agreement made.
1:47 black is losing, but in the next scene the girl said they r equal, they dont even know how to play chess
This whole show is stupid lol.
@Blue Silver
I don't need to when it's trash from the start.
Schneizel isn't playing to win the game, he's playing to win the game going on outside the game.
When he called checkmate he was calling it on himself
Schneizel way of saying life is not just a chess he's willing to do illegal move or cheat to destroy he's opponent .
He did it to read how zero/lelouch way of thinking or what kind of person it is .
Where did you get the video from?!?!? I am an AMV maker and I need this kind of videos. Can you or anyone in this section please tell me?
If you're still interested it is from Code Geass S2 E9
Well, he was the son of the emperor. Maybe he changed the rule of chess
If a king doesn't lead how he can except his subordinate to follow
What kind of rules they're this chess with
At 2:46 schneizel found that zero is a revenger not an emperor ( just I think )
Well, it's kind of good to see some animes trying to make sense on chess but those are some of the worst moves since falling victim to a three move end game. Whoever wrote this is probably more into Shogi. The game is more close to Shogi but with different rules when it comes to the pawns who attack diagonally when it comes to neutralizing the opposer because they can't attack horizontally.
The true Kings Gamble.
Season 2 episode 9
I agree on TL Note 4
ルール無視してて笑える
キングで白のキングを取るのが嫌ならポーンで取れば良くない?
How excited Kaguya got. She is so cute;-)
he does not even need to move a king! A pawn on the right would do the job.

2:16 wait where did that pawn on a6 come from? It wasn’t there at 1:47
I cant believe that I thought it was a smart move when I was 6
When you don't know how to play chess
But you act like you do
Obviously the chess clocks are off screen to the side lol
I don't get why people question the chess scenes in Code Geass when it could all be easily justified in-universe that the chess they developed had slightly different rules and extra nuances than the chess we grew up playing.
and with which rules would that move be possibly anything other than giving up? also is lelouch moving his pawn to his ground line? even if this is legal what possible benefits can he gain. i highly doubt they play edgeless chess
Well, in Code Geass' version of Chess there could be unique interactions on King vs. King checkmates.
You definitely seem knowledgeable on Chess, but your saying "I highly doubt they play edgeless chess" sort of proves my original point, that people are assuming what version of Chess is played in Code Geass when we have no clue how the game rules developed in their universe.
PandaJerk007 ridiculous king checking another king wouldn't result in a check mate cause both kings would be in check that makes no sense

Even in Blitz game, it is still considerated as Illegal Move. I'm a chess palyer myself, so i can say it for sure.
For everyone saying they dont know how to play
chess via one Lelouch spawning with extra
pawns thats because the animators mistake and
its consistent that he had more pawns but that
one scene was art mistake because we even hear
kaguya say "well there evenly matched" implying
thats its more so in the realm of actuality that he
did have that many pieces so that can be
dismissed and thrown out the window. And 2
Schneizel moving the king next to each other is
simply him doing this as intimidation to discover
Lelouchs identity as we alr know thats his only
intentions so thats why he did the illegal move.
In this position I was like WTF! Isn't White a knight and 3 pawns ahead??
