They are getting rare these days. I've got parts that I ordered waiting to go on the bike for the next video. I hope I can get bike back close to what it once was. Cheers
I can’t wait to see the second vid, especially how you go about restoring the clutch. I’m in a similar boat with my bike, haven’t had the heart to tear into her blind. Great vid as alway m8.
Hi mate, just rescued it from the back paddock this morning. I will be doing another video shortly and going through the bike and finding all the faults and fixing them. They are good old bikes and hopefully I will get this one running and looking well. Cheers
ATF & Turpentine or Diesel makes good Penetrating Oil, I'll give you Recipe a Go As well!! I got a old Ballard's XRs Only XR630 - She Still Thumps Hard!! Make Sure the Oil Line to the Head is Primed, the are Notorious for Flogging out the Camshaft Tunnel, from Oil Starvation & the only Remedy is a Replacement Head, & Honda haven't made 'Em for about a Decade!! - Great Job - Let Her Ripp!! 👍😉🍻
Thanks for the tip, I will check that out. Hopefully get around to making the next video next week. I've got a few parts ready to install plus there is still a lot of work to go, hopefully It will be a good runner. Cheers
I raced an Al Baker XR280 for years which is the same engine design just smaller, the one thing I had to replace every so often was the cam chain, the auto tensioner does a good job of keeping the chain tight but also causes it to stretch, those are great bikes and worth restoring but parts are getting hard to come by, I hope you do a full restore on it.
Hi Rob, wont be a full restore but it will be very close to it. I'm already finding it hard with a few parts but I have a small shop full of machining tools so I will get away with making a few of the parts. Cheers
I do a lot of bikes just like this and I will share my knowledge with you . the first thing you wanna do with a bike in this condition is give it a complete soaking in wd-40 head to toe, with tank seat and plastics off it helps dislodge old dirty and grease and does wonders for the aluminum and magnesium engine parts and obviously helps loosen fasteners
Yeah timing chain prone to stretch got to keep clean oil in motor not a big capacity of oil cam and bigger valve's in hemispherical head can get some good gains big torque
It was very wise adding a little motor oil to the cylinder after the beast had sat so long (outside?!???). I cringe when watching "will it start?" documentation of -whatever- sitting years/decades & no cylinder oiling is bothered with. Where roughly in the Down Under you located?
Checking the oil, let it idle for 5-10 minutes on level ground, wait 2 minutes, unscrew dipstick, wipe dipstick, insert dipstick to the thread, do not screw in, lift dipstick and read oil level. you can't read the oil level on a cold bike, the oil seeps down in the crank case.
Hi thanks for the comment. I added a little oil before I could even start the bike and I didn't even know if the engine would. The bike didn't run in many years.
I picked up a 1988 XR600R from my bro for $400 and it has sat in a garage for 26 years..I have been working on it and love it so much!!!
That's good to hear. Im having trouble getting parts for mine but there should be a video soon where I finish the project. Cheers
Great find. I grabbed 1 3 years ago sitting behind a shed. They are a great bike 👍

Well how do ever expect to learn anything? 🤔 Just put your big boy pants on and dive in. You'll see it's not that scary
This is typically the condition you find these machines. Honda built them so good nobody ever did any maintenance. Just put gas and oil
Yes they are good old machines. Cheers
