Great video and a great bike! I've had 2 Cross Checks. I got the first one over 20 years ago. I sold it and bought one a size larger 5 years ago. I've very much enjoyed my Cross Checks. Always SS by the way.
I agree with what you are saying about single speed. You are fortunate to have found such an excellent bicycle that is a single speed. I am still riding my old cruiser bicycle...with a few mods.
nice to see someone on yt make the same mistakes as everybody else. chop it off than realizing you need to move it. clasic. happy it worked out. im building a surly steamroller soon, its in the mail :)
I do think you're onto something with that statement. It is such a practical skill, and to make useful stuff with a sewing machine, doesn't require mastery. I quite enjoy it and find it satisfying (once my wife showed me how to do the things that were making me frustrated 😆👍)
@@Simplelittlelife weeeell, lets see: so far, I've learned, gunsmithing, blacksmithing, welding, carpentry and masonery...but, still have issues on my cross sew and my croché
Single speed simplicity... In addition to what you mentioned, they're really easy to clean! Hose pipe, bit of rag and some chain lube. Those Schwalbe tyres/tires are brilliant! I've been running them on my commuter for 10-11 years and never once had a puncture*. * I touched the wooden bookshelf to my left as I wrote this.
I found a green one for $900 he paid $1400 I think he rode it 30 miles, it's practically new, it's in my size 54cm, it's 2 by 9 I think, I may make it single in front, it comes with cantilever brakes.
Excellent vid Bro. You just could not have a better Bike. Being Single Speed & Black, just make it perfect. I really love the way you feel about your Cross Check. I can not wait to get mine. It is on its way to where I am from. Venezuela. I am just gonna have a Ball cruising the whole place around. Cheers Boddy !!
Congrats on your new Cross Check!... Are things getting any better down there in Venezuela? I know there’s been some very hard living down there for a time. Best wishes to you!
@@billyjambone2399 Hi Billy , nice talking to you man. No bro,, Things are still hard down here. In fact, they are getting worse everyday. That is why I am ready to hit the road & the Dirt for quite some time as soon as my C.C. gets here. Thanks for the reply. Keep in touch Boddy,, you too take care.
Thank you so much! I’m excited for you to get yours! I hope things get better there. I lived in Rubio for 1 year and I love Venezuela. So hard to see how things are changing there. We’re still in touch with some friends we made there and it’s insane what’s happening. I hope you stay safe and getting out on a cross check will certainly be a great way to clear the mind. 👍
@El vlog... Try to stay safe down there! I hate hearing about so many people suffering such hardship!... You definitely picked the right bike. If you want an indestructible tire with super long tread life and high puncture resistance look into the Schwalbe Mondial, they are a world tourer tire that was designed to take tons of miles even with loaded packs. They work in dirt and pavement. Best wishes brother.
@@jeremygoertz Hi Jeremy, Man,, I can not believe how cool it is to meet nice and awesome people this way, especially talking about, and sharing true Love and passion about Surly Bikes. It just does not get any better than this. What a sweet surprise it is to to know , you some time ago lived down here for a while. Now , I can say, we for sure have got something in common. I Just love your vids and everything about them. Where you live , reminds me a LOT to where I went to school in the States. I went to KU. Lawrence, Kansas University. Yes, things down here and getting harder and harder everyday, but I tell you what ? we have got down here some of the most gorgeous and exotic places around the world to bike around. and for me,, that is enough. I love the outdoors some much, I just could not live without them. For sure, we will keep in touch. You just keep making those cool vids, and WE will keep falling in love with Surly Bikes more and more. Take care bro. P.S. I will get to drink a nice and cold POLAR beer on your name. How is that ?
Surly makes the Hurdy Gurdy which they say is specifically designed for tensioning semi-horizontal forward facing dropouts (like on the Cross Check). Also it's got no bottle opener so it's likely to not interfere with your original fender stay mounting position.
halo richard, is the hub on the back (dropouts) really a defect of the Surly Crosscheck type? im a newbie but love Crosscheck model I want to buy it, but now I'm worried, some people also talk about the incline and the occurrence of the hub part wobbling.
@@Banggeek It's not a defect. The dropouts are an old design. Bikes had that kind of dropout for many years. The hub axle can pull forward if someone is just too strong and/or the quick release skewer is a weaker model. Shimano skewers, DT skewers, and Paul Comp skewers are generally thought to be very strong

I'm also ordering me a bike stand, I'm tired of flipping the bike over, and I ordered me an affordable cyclist repair kit, comes with everything I'll need, I can true wheels with break pads, I can almost eye bent derailleur hanger.
I don't think so. If you were doing a lot of gnarly trails and single track with his then it might be. But I think that if it don't kill an actual derailleur, it probably wouldn't harm the hanger. I have owned single speed bikes with derailleur hangers for years and not once have I damaged one. My two cents 👍
I am 6’2” and generally I prefer my frames a little on the larger side. This one being a 60CM, I have a healthy fist full of seat post so there is certainly room to go down a bit if desired. That’s the real trouble these days isn’t it? Hard to find anything lately.
I'm 6 two on a 60 by Surly. Likely should have gone smaller myself. Though it might be a bit too big for 6 footer. Try a midnight special, it's fast in the rear, and stable in front. Best bike i've ever owned.
Yeah it’s a cheap rack (used to sell them for $15) from Nashar. Sadly, they don’t make it anymore. I had two from about 15 years ago and I’d wished I bought 10 of them back in the day. Decent size, cheap and light 👍
I would certainly agree with you on that. We're not flat flat here but in most of my riding from home I only have one big hill. And I hate it. Brings me to a crawl, standing out of the saddle just to keep moving. Last about 6 minutes and feel like it almost kills me every time. I wish I could flatten that hill! 😆👍

Hahahaha, right on. I’ve had a few of them on various bikes and they certainly are reliable 👍
I love the aesthetics of classic looking steel bikes they just look better than the new ones with those frames for long rides
Yeah I hear you. They look so sweet and the steel is able to flex and move a bit so the right is usually very comfortable on these steel frames
Awesome video! So informative, and the editing is smooth!
