This concerto has very interesting and attractive qualities: it is well built, exhibits beautiful harmonic and melodic features, is well written both for the instrument and the orchestra. Its lyrism is noble and intense and never falls into sentimentality or other defaults. It could be longer (it is only 18 minutes long). It is a masterpiece in the repertoire, which should not be forgotten as it is now.
Eighteen minutes: "Less is More," (Robert Browning, "Andrea del Sarto" ("The Faultless Painter," 1855). Also, in architecture, a phrase adopted in 1947 by architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe as a precept for Minimalist design and architecture.
@@steveegallo3384 I fully agree wih you. This sentence is by no ways a criticism, but a comparison withi he time standards; Webern wrote scores lasting about one minute; 'Schoenbreg declared that he had put a whole novek into a single sight'.
Saint-Saëns' Cello Concerto in A Minor is usually performed in under twenty minutes and is a powerful and beautiful work. I like that it is "shorter" - some composers can over-embellish their concerti. Sadly, too, some composers have a great thing going and then seem to lose momentum or miss an opportunity. For example, the last few minutes of Victor Herbert's Cello Concerto N°2 in E Minor.
@Gary Allen I fully agree with you. This tonality is brillant since its main chords can use natural resonance of some strings without fingering. So, the cello two upper strings sound as D-A, the basic tonal fifth in D major. Some composers dare to avoid this lazy principle. For instance, Shostakovitch's first cello concerto is in Eb, and the first violin one in C#.
I like Svendesn's music. he is not as popular. He was also a conductor. He wrote 2 symphonies, a romance and concerto for violin and many other pieces His romance for violin and orchestra is his most famous piece. IC XC NI KA

An excellent cello concerto. Thank you..!
Wonderful piece. Truly needs to be better known.
Very nice - I was made to study so many average concertos and have never heard this before. Just found it on Petrucci. Something beautiful new!
+georgcello if you perform this concerto please upload a video on youtube so we can hear your perfomance =) Greetings
It was written in the 1860's but the opening few minutes sounds more like it cam from the 1700's. I hope that this piece becomes more popular.
Esplêndido!

He was more popular than Grieg, but suddenly stopped composing around 1875.
