Just a heads up, the Bobwhite is a native game bird so you may need a license to raise/sell them in the US. Something to consider when making your choise.
Here in Michigan you can keep a maximum of 12 bobwhite quail without a permit as long as you aren't breeding them. Since coternix is not a native species, there's no permit requirement for them in Michigan.
Varies state by state. In North Carolina the permit is free and only requires the owner to keep a record of receipts and sales. This is separate from food sales and processing.
I bought 100 bobwhite hatchlings from a game bird hatchery. Give 30 to my dad, I built a 4'×8' pen for the 70 I have left. Easy to take care of and feed. I gotta rake the straw bedding out once a week. Very enjoyable..
Hi, nice video. I've been raising quail for 5yrs now. I started with bible and bobwhite, i now have A&M, tuxedo, Italian & blonde. They all get along fine, just don't mix any variety of reds or jumbo. It took me a little over a yr to not have to buy fertilized eggs. Very enjoyable "hobby". side note- coturnix+A&M= tuxedo.
Thanks. I have a Local hatchery an hour from me that do coturnix, So I was leaning that direction anyway as I could pick up the eggs rather than shipping that. This video has helped me 50 you I am moving in the right direction!
Thanks heaps for this. I've been raising Coturnix for a while now for both eggs and meat. But the Bob Whites are sooo cute. In Ozstralya Bob Whites are very expensive ($80 per pair compared to $20 for Coturnix). I'll stick with my birds. Cheers!
From what I've read so far there are bobwhite breeds that grow larger than jumbo coturnix, but as shown in this video and many other places, coturnix will out perform in the time it takes them to grow. If I'm not mistaken it takes coturnix like 8weeks and the bobwhite like 17-19weeks. I'm not sure if that's the precise time for bobwhite but the only reference I found gave those many weeks. So as a prepper or business or reliability decision, the coturnix wins. If you wanna go a bit out of your way to to have a bit bigger bird and help educate and public your native species, go bobwhite. Do check your state dnrlaws on owning quail, native species, and if applicable the requirements to sell birds or products from them.
Great video; very informative and, in many ways, inspirational. I tried quail eggs for breakfast in Latvia last year and fell in love with the taste. I'd really like to add them to my diet, but can't find anyone who sells them where I live. Any where else I can buy some? I live in Jacksonville, Florida. USA. Thanks again for the video!
In my opinion the bobwhite quails are prettier and more unique/cool to look at but the coturnix quail are much more practical in most ways. ALTHOUGH I’ve heard of people having success with natural hatching more so with bobwhites than with coturnix which makes sense since bobwhites are wild and haven’t had the instinct bred out of them.
Nice video! The quails were super cute! Thanks for teaching me. I dont have quails, but find them adorable! It's nice to know about the difference between the two birds! Ita very strange that even though they are both quail there incubation periods are different. It's interesting how God does that! Anyway, good luck with the quail and nice video!
In nc we have Georgia giant bobwhite which have eggs year round eggs are larger and the size of the bird is 3 times larger they are also calmer / domesticated . We also have Wisconsin jumbo bobwhite . The first is great for coastal regions and piedmont the 2nd best for mountain region of nc . You don’t need a liscense in nc and definitely not for the domestic ones
Many thanks, I've been looking for "why are my bobwhite quail dying" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Eeyila Rudimentary Expediency - (just google it ) ? It is a good one off guide for discovering how to raise healthy and fertile quail without the hard work. Ive heard some super things about it and my cousin got cool results with it.
My granddaughter and I are hatching BW quail. Hopefully. The eggs We are into day 7 using a small commercial incubator. What temp should we aim for when we start the brooding process and how long should they stay in the brooding box? Thanks.
Thanks. I live in France, and I want to try of buying eggs from the supermarket to try my very first incubation process. What kind of quail do they sell in your opinion?
Yup Coturnix are slobs Bobwhites are a nightmare. They fly like stink and the only reason you rear them is to train bird dogs like I do. Really challenging birds. Cannibals, trample all over their own , need 3x more space and if you want to use them for bird dog training you need to build a flight pen so that they get flight time. That said my escapees entertain my Setter! He gets them every time! Setters rock but Old Hemlock Setters are rock stars!
Joan Smith Yes, they do have a nicer sound in my opinion. Here’s a cotunix call: ruclips.net/video/_T3KU93FxP4/видео.html Here’s a Bobwhite call: ruclips.net/video/nEKIAteCDYU/видео.html
I came across a bob white male when young as a pet opportunity....lucky for this lil shit I’m a huge animal person and I’ve always wanted a bird. So he stays with my other herbivors...but it’s true they rlly r kinda wild. He only likes me and legit attacks everyone else. Still he’s my precious bird boy
I have raised both. Coturnix----Fast growers BUT require twice as much feed. Fast growers BUT poop twice as much and it is very liquidy. Dark meat birds one level worse than chicken dark meat. Calm as chickens, can be handled no problem Can be cramped together with fewer problems. Vocal sounds irritating. Bob Whites---Slower growing BUT eat half as much feed as coturnix Slower growing BUT poop half as much and poop is much dryer. White meat birds much more tender and tastier than chicken. Not calm. cannot be handled. They want to excape all the time. Cannot be cramped together. Vocal sounds are absolutely beautiful. All in All: I have gotten rid of my coturnix and have Bob Whites. I have not tried Some sites are saying that activity controls the color and taste of meat. Hogwash. Coturnix are dark meat birds period. Bobwhites are white meat birds period. Enough of that. I have been raising birds since I was 10 years old and now am 63. Bobwhite quail meat is so tender that you cannot soak it in buttermilk like you would chicken breast. It will dissolve. The most tender bird meat I have ever eaten was bob white breast meat. I have eaten most birds including crow. If you enjoy white meat then wait until they mature. If you enjoy dark meat and fast turnover then put up with all the wet poop and large feed bills.
Everyone with me now, follow along if you know it. I used to be a bobwhite a good old bobwhite too, but now ive finished bobwhite-ing i dont know what to do...
I made the same discovery in a slightly different way. I wanted quail for the same reason and Bobwhite chicks were all I could find. I don not recommend getting quail chicks. Of the 56 mailed to me only 18 are still alive 6 days after they arrived. They are super skittish and those that survived are pecking at each other’s toes brutally. I spoke with a quail farmer that’s been doing quail for 50+ years. I have the conditions right. Could I email you some specifics of my situation to see if you’ve had similar experiences?
When they peck at eachother's toes it means they are looking for meal worms/grubs because they are protein deficient and lacking in nutrients. You need to feed them live grubs.
Bob whites (Jumbos) get alot bigger than coturnix when fully grown. Bobwhites are also native birds Coturnix are from China. This lady is from Colorado so just do the opposite of what she says and you should be good.
Don't be worried bobwhites take a little longer to raise but they give you white meat instead of very dark meat and they dress out more meat than the coturnix quail.
Why do you buy a second incubator if one egg type takes longer to hatch? That is not at all logical and something that everyone would do. Normally people just put the eggs that hatch faster in the incubator after the ones that take longer, it's that simple!
Hello. Great vídeo. If you have some time available, I would like to talk about the bobwhite quail. Thank you in advance for your attention. And congratulations on the video
Your comparing a crow to a game rooster!!! Courtnix are a waste of time and feed. The crow would taste better. The Bob White however is the best meat on the planet!!!!! Yeah, they are harder to raise but certainly well worth it!!!
Bobwhite quail seem to always be afraid of humans (when they mature) so the whole agrument of "what if it's imprinted" and such is thrown right there. Also, a lot of quail are endangered in a few states so raising and releasing is a really good idea. Me and a few other homesteads around my small city raise quail and incubate their eggs, wait 6 weeks or so and release them in the warmer months and the population of them got higher which is actually pretty good for the general ecosystem. Quail are also native to America so they are not invasive at all.
Coturnix are not a subspecies of bobwhite. The two species evolved completely separate from each other on different continents. They don't even share the same genus.
