They only got the whole story well after the 2nd impeachment. They had some of it but how the whole story was knitted together only after it was all over. Don't forget, these authors had to fact check everything before they could say or print anything. And with a family as screwed up as the Trumps and with their penchant for suing for any and all reasons, their hesitation is understandable. If Trump had launched a lawsuit to stop publication it would still be in court and we wouldn't know half of this stuff. So I wouldn't be too harsh on them.
