Fabulous plans Alan. Looking forward to you helping me to finally make it all the way through Lord of the Flies. I’ve been doing pretty much the same thing. I was pretty rebellious at school and refused to enjoy anything I was ordered to read. This year I reread Hard Times by Charles Dickens and thoroughly enjoyed it. I’ve also reread 1984 and a book on the evolution of English called Our Language by Simeon Potter. I’m generally enjoying the old set texts much more as an adult, although I did enjoy 1984 first time around. Great video 😊

Thanks Debs, I'm hoping it is as good as I remember!

Terrific plan for January, Alan. I used to teach Lord of the Flies for many years. I'll look forward to hearing what you and Debs think of it this time around.

I’m both excited and a little nervous to revisit it after over 30 years but it was on this reading list for a reason so I don’t think it will let me down!

I look forward to hearing your reaction to your reread of Lord of the Flies. Like many others, I read this as a high school student. I've seen other Booktubers talk about their rereads with varying reactions!! I liked it when I read it - but that was over 50 years ago.

Yes I admit to being slightly nervous about it not living up to the memories that I have of it.

One of my favorite parts of Historathon is finding new-to-me channels like yours, Alan. Glad that you're joining us this year! I see that you're already in the D-cord, too (comments where I fully spell it out inevitably seem to get automatically deleted by RUclips). Do pop over and say hello sometime!

Thank you and welcome to my channel. I’m still trying to get to grips with DC but I will, thanks

Alan this man is dangerous… encourages you to read books you’ve never thought about reading 😂😂. Don’t say I haven’t warned you 😊

Ah, Lord of the Flies (LotF) was a set text at school for me too. Ours wasn't the best school and I'm sure the teacher gave up on us because before the exams came around we were treated to the 1963 film version which seemed to cover everything I needed to get through the English O Level. Looking at the volume you hold up here I'd be tempted to skip LotF and jump straight into Pincher Martin. Another decent Golding book is The Inheritors which, along with Pincher Martin has a nice twist in the tail.
Looking forward to know how you get on with the buddy read.
    Cheers👍🏼

Your school experience reading LotF sounds very similar to mine, we were also exposed to the film on a creaky VHS cassette. I read Pincher Martin in 2023, having skipped LotF then, but maybe I’ll read Rites of Passage afterwards to complete the volume?

@@AlansReads I wouldn't be polite to leave Rites of Passage hanging. 🙂

Good day from Texas. Maybe instead of reading Lord of the Flies your friend might try first J.G. Ballard's High-Rise. Ballard's book compliments Golding's.
I too like WWI poetry and fiction. I especially enjoyed Pat Barker's Regeneration trilogy, with Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon, and Robert Graves, appearing through the novels. Excellent historical fiction.
Ford Maddox Ford's Parades End is one of my favorite books. It's a actually a quartet of books that take place during WWI.
The BBC adapted it a few years ago with Benedict Cumberbach as the main character, Christopher Tietjens. It was a faithful adaptation. Recommend it, too.

I've had the Regeneration trilogy on my reading list for a while, but still haven't gotten to it, so many books I want to read and not enough time! I'll be adding Parades End to the list to, thanks for the tip.

Been a long time since I’ve read Lord of the Flies, had to read it for school as well and the way it was taught was very dull. I might have to give it another go, to many good books are ruined by poor teaching.

True, I was lucky with the English teacher I had and it’s maybe why I remember enjoying it. I wonder if I’ll feel the same over 30 years later?
