This was a really fun project. If you guys have any ideas on how to improve the design, I'm all ears! I thinking this winter I'll fabricate a roller! If you liked this video, check out the rest of the channel and subscribe! : ruclips.net/channel/UC-GLv-PE9Mn9goCpeCYeYug?view_as=subscriber
I just made this on a smaller tote box. I made a few adjustments though. I put the wire inside the box and I used 1/4" wire. I haven't used it yet but im hoping it comes out as good as yours.
I was able to make the same peat moss spreader you did, but I added some wheels. I ran a 3/8 inch threaded metal rod ($4), bought some cheap plastic lawn mower wheels with at least 3/8 inch holes. And added two 3/8 inch nuts on the ends to cap off the axels. I’m currently trying to fix up a handle to pull it by. It rolls easy!!
Put wheels on it by finding a rod to use as an axle, run it through the box lengthwise. Find some cheap wheels, attach them. Then McGyver something for a handle. You can then push it a ways, stop suddenly, back up a bit and repeat until you've spread the load. Possible alternative to stopping is to add "bumps" to the wheels so it thumps and causes release. ?
That's what I would do - but I would cut off some of one wheel so that when you tow it behind the mower it would bounce a little to shake the peat out. I think that it would be great for worm castings with a 1/8" hardware cloth.
Guy in my neighborhood did almost the same thing but put it in a wooden frame with wheels and tows it around his yard with his lawn mower, the bumps in the yard “shake” the compost out.
I was thinking buy a cheap plastic wheel barrow. Cut out the bottom. Then attach the chicken wire to the opening. Fill with peat moss. Walk it around and shake it up and down.
Dude you gave me an idea because I need to spread some moss also over a couple acres. Thinking about doing the same thing to the big plastic dump trailer for my lawn mower. 850lbs capacity. Cut the bottom out of it and install screen like you did, but for the “shake” the make it fall maybe I can affix some wood pieces around the tires every 3-5 inches or so. I have to try this now. That was a lot of work. Thanks for sharing
wheels both on the front and back and incorporate a vibration system to ensure you get an even spread. I would also mix the peat moss with seeds and use it to re-seed... Make it so it is only about five/six inches above the ground. Or in place of a vibration system; put a handle to push, stop, pull, push and continue with this method for an even spread...
Thanks 😊 for the great idea. It’s better than paying to rent a pea moss spreader $30-50 4hrs at Home Depot or even buying a spreader for $170. Certainly making one. Thanks 🙏🏾👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽🙏🏾
I made this spreader over the weekend. Gave it a try for my overseed project. Not bad, only did 1 bale, using about 1/4 of the bale at a time. It was a little windy, but worked well enough. If I had to do 10+ bales, I'd buy the roller. But for the spot areas I was doing it was great. Going to use it at a friend house for his renovation, I'll let him do this part.
Really wish I saw this yesterday! I attempted making my own rotary sifter, what a pain in the butt!!!!! Wasted all day making it “perfect” by the time I took it outside it was almost dark and I lost a freakin wheel…. So now I’m thinking this is a better idea BUT I’m going to put big wheels on it lol. I think my favorite thing to do to myself is “make something to save time and money” then I end up wasting time and money in the process 😅
I have those exact containers to store tools and other stuff in my garage. I can imagine that a good amount of the peat moss ended up in your boots. I have spread it via shovel and it is slow going. I just might try this! Thanks buddy.
I'm a guy who likes manual labor, I'll try this out this weekend :) climate threw me in for a loop though. From 75 degree weather to snow and frost. I just over seeded last week too.
great vid!i liked it, any reason y ur spreading moss in the 1st place, not sure if i missed that in video, overseeding? also, what abot over lapping the wire mess with another set? to decrease the flow of moss dropping? thanks!
Thanks for making this video! I plan on using my DIY peat moss spreader to clean my landscaping rocks once I get done spreading the peat moss on my lawn.
Did you ever think about putting the container on short skids and pulling thru the yard with a rope? Im just guessing but I think the uneveness os the yard jostling the tub around will shake out a more even quantity. Just a guess though.
Thats looks like really hard work. So how about a rig on wheels? some sort of garden cart, put a mesh in the bottom and perhaps you can just pull it around on the lawn and let the natural vibrations shake it out? IT would also allow you to load up a full bale at a time, I think?
Great idea. Yeah fill it 1/2 way definitely. On v2.0 Any thought of adding wheels to your tool ie harbor freight.. and create a handle maybe thought pvc piping .. Just a thought....
wow I am impressed with this. And it made me think of how I can do it easier.. wheels were spinning.. and guess what? Wouldn't be hard to borrow a shopping cart from a local store.. that thing should naturally rattle on a lawn.. i mean some of them frankly rattle on a smooth floor anyways.. im really curious if it will work. LOL
You could have just drilled holes in the tote and not used a screen at all. Could also have used the plastic garbage can: drill holes in the cylinder and then roll the can with the peat inside. Could also borrow a grocery cart from supermarket. Dump the peat in and roll the cart along.
Great invention! Unable to locate a peat moss spreader to rent from Home Depot, etc. Did you use 1/4” or 1/2” screen? One or multiple layers of screen?
Just remember it gets lighter with every shake🤣🤣. Get some wheels to stick through the sides and one for up front. Make it a cart. Easier on the back and mind. Also what is the purpose of spreading the peat here?
It’s like dusting confectioners sugar, albeit on a large scale! Nice for sifting of debris, but respectfully not for me, my noodle arms would fall off. Maybe good cardio though
dude make a round one that turns that you just roll around, work smarter not harder couple of 5 gallon buckets cutin half with wire cloth between them.
This is great! I just bought all the materials for this spreader. Hey, did you throw the pete moss bag around before emptying it in the spreader? I do it all the time and its a lot lighter after tossing it around a few times.
Wow, maybe a smaller container....how did you feel the next morning? 😨 Another suggestion, make round wood ends and put wire around the wood and put some type of handle. Of course have an open area to put the peat moss in. There's a video by Everyday Dad.
I put up all the zip codes that I know and no where does HD rent them. I think they must have stopped renting but still have it on their website. Such a disgrace!
It should work for compost as well. I can't imagine why it wouldn't unless it had a lot of moisture maybe. I'm starting a compost pile now so hopefully next year I can give it a try!

Put the wire on the inside. No need for duct tape
