Thank you, Jesse. I am getting old and have had massive heart problems. I can still sit in front of a computer and I still have to actually fight on my workdays. I deal with mental health for a living and I have been a practitioner of Karate for almost forty years. Because of Karate no patient who attacked me got hurt... nor did I. Thank you Master Junki Yoshida for teaching my teachers correctly. I will never forget one hundred push-ups because of getting out of control during a match. The punishment was well deserved. I love watching your videos, they make me wish I were young again.

I love this notion of what a Kata is, and it was really hard to learn them because I never knew what it was for. A suggestion from a new fan: maybe making a series for the main Kata from each belt

Jesse you are absolutely amazing and I always learn so much from you. For all my years of martial arts I never really understood the meaning of doing Kata. This just makes so much sense. You are really an extraordinary individual. Thank you so much!

World needs more than one Jesse. You are great man... I will never pratice real karate because there are no more dojos or masters who have your same point of view. (In italy, or near where I live).
However I like what you said about 1kata-3years. I am praticing karate about 3 years and i know a lot of superior katas but without really understanding it, and I feel bad about this. Also because I am brown belt but basically I know nothing about what i am doing, even if i am quite a good karateka. I hope to attend one of your courses one day.

It is really a great exercise. It teaches kata on many levels. On one level it shows the connection of the move to a person and it also shows the disconnection that comes from going to a person to doing it in the air. Again very nice exercise.

Great initiative..only a few have ventured this far in finding the roots of karate and slowly uncovering what karate used to be. I believe that the days in which people will incorporate this type of training into their induvidual practices and classes is not far. This can help elevate the status of karate to what it was in the olden days.

Now I get it. After 2 1/2 weeks of watching Jesse's videos. Jesse saw that many people mistakenly believe that karate doesn't work in a real fight, because they, or their friends, have been taught karate in an incomplete way. So Jesse is on a crusade to revive the original way of teaching karate, which is to reveal its inherent Bunkai or practical applications. I'm sure there is more to Jesse than just this, and I will realize more as I keep watching his videos.

every martial arts should be taught in this manner. i think it would definitely help make the styles make more sense. it would especially apply to taekwondo, old version of muay tai, old version of boxing and several of the kungfu styles that you don't get to see in mma because people don't know why it is used or in what situation it is the best.

This makes sense.... This type of training will sure improve karate. Great initiative. This also sheds light on the large variations in karate of today as in olden days masters would make kata suited for the student this could also be how various karate schools originated. But schools which teach and practice kata like this are a very few to none these days. How can one learn good karate without good schools. Today good schools are scarce.

that was a very good way of seeing it's origin. it's like shadow boxing but more personal. taekwondo has a similar flaw. it was taught in a similar way but it took too long(not any more). also, taekwondo is what we call the final product of the many styles that were put together and got polished. Taekkyon is an example of some of the ancient styles that were used originally. also, originally, taekwondo/taekkyun/etc. didn't have a proper name. like karate, the style was borrowed from several kung fu/wushu styles and was taught to the military as a "martial defense arts"(this is how i interpreted it). eventually, the style became more and more original to korea(as it got used in combat and people learned the practical uses of each sequence and moves). in fact, while i see many animal styles in karate such as the well known crane style, i see other animal styles in taekwondo. when i was learning it, i didn't quite see it(i was 8 or 9). but when i think back to it and compare it to kungfu, i see the tiger style and some parts of snake style. karate felt like it was a soft style(diversion is key) and taekwondo was more of a hard style (direct and gravitating). karate starts with redirecting the attack and then following up with an attack while taekwondo uses the opponent's movements to amplify the attack. i mean, it would make total sense to use the oponent's attacks because it was developed specifically for war purposes originally. karate was taught in okinawa which is a seperate island to the mainland meaning it was more peaceful and therefore it was a self defense at it's core. while taekwondo was more of a "if i don't attack, i could die" style. karate focuses heavily on turning the body into a shield by constantly hitting something until the bone is denser and the skin is like that of leather. and korea, being a country full of mountains and hills, utilized the environment to do endurance training and muscle training. if you've ever done it the traditional way(i did), you'll have to go up an entire mountain first by running and then hop all the way down while in a sitting position and not using your hands. if you've ever wondered why on tv or in games like tekken, the character does mostly kicks, it's because of all the running in the mountains. we use legs because the are crazy stronger and faster than most other attacks we can use(it doesn't mean we throw soft punches). also, with taekwondo being developed for war originally, we used swords and we kicked while using swords. my kwan jang nim(korean for dojo master or sensei) taught us taekwondo and at the same time korean kendo to show us the original roots and to show us why we kick a certain way in taekwondo that is different from other martial arts. i know this is long but this video got me interested and made me think back to when i was still learning and what i know now because of what i learned then.

Personally speaking, I would find it very interesting and fulfilling to study one kata for three years, because the way I understand it, kata is the basis of karate.
As long as the given techniques and applications of kata are studied and practiced repeatedly until they are part of the muscle memory on one level while the concepts behind them get absorbed by the practitioners, then the same practitioners can be assured that they are studying karate the way it is supposed to be studied.

The point Jessie makes in this video is probably the most important one, we need more instructors to be teaching bunkai showing the application before the kata. If we only meet up once or twice a week and spend the whole time practicing a solo form of fighting, its not self defense. The more we practice with each other the less we'll end up getting injured. The amount of guys I've been with who show no control because they're so used to going in full speed and power. The solo kata should show the full range of motion and speed necessary.

Great video thank you, can you explain the idea of seishin ! I understand yin -yang as the 2 opposites that have to exist in order to create one another. Understanding this is very important for the cultural understanding. But the idea of three is often seen as in seishin or often as the triangle in many arts. Can you talk about your ideas on this very important concept, and maybe deeper meanings, as multiple translations ! The Buddhist include the middle way as the third part, what have you heard? Thanks Scott
