Great podcast as always. Have you guys heard of the fan theory where Punk Drunk Love is actually secret Superman movie? I think it's pretty compelling. Barry is like an alien from another planet, he doesn't fit in like most people; he lives in his fortress of solitude (right from first frame of the movie); his outwardly awkward and anxious demeanor hides superhuman strength (he breaks unbreakable things, he beats up the "bad guys" easily); the frequent-flyer miles he accumulates allows him to fly anywhere he wants; his love interest, Lena Leonard, has a name that sounds similar to Lois Lane; Barry's sisters, who often wear color green (or have green around them), are his kryptonite; in his final confrontation with "The Mattress Man", Philip Seymour Hoffman wears something that looks like the black cape of a Villain; and, my favourite : in the final scene where Lena, dressed all in red, wraps herself around Barry's neck, he -- who's been wearing a blue suit the entire movie -- finally gets his cape, and he is now complete.

It’s Paul’s retelling of one of his favorite filmmaker. Robert Altman. Popeye. The mattress man spot came from an actual vhs tape Paul had from an actual commercial. Every detail from that spot is almost identical to what you see in the recreation.

I love how this film was the perfect companion piece to Uncut Gems, both in style and tone. Well done y'all, this was an enjoyable watch during my morning routine!

Firstly, I have to give props to the colour scheme on the thumbnail. Secondly, this is my second favourite PTA film after The Master. Blasphemous I know, but I still have yet to watch Boogie Nights. I know There Will Be Blood is heralded as his magnum opus but it hasn't connected with me the way that this film has. As a novice I understand that I'm not smart enough to fully grasp the complexity of TWBB yet, but hopefully one day it will click. All I know is that Punch Drunk Love just clicked immediately for me & I could easily appreciate everything it had to offer. Even hearing "He Needs Me" by Shelley Duvall, which was sampled on one of my fav albums "Below The Heavens" by Blu & Exile just elevated the experience.

Great episode, and I loved Tricia's likening the movie to a Beatles song. Michael's blazer offers a nice homage, and it classes up the whole vibe.

    I would tweet Tricia a pun about paper but I won't, because it's tearable😅
Michael in a suit talking about sound design should be a spin off of shorts.
Miles high fiving people in The Godfather is sick lol.
Alex's laugh at Dick & Angel Stawbridge is infectious.

Originally. Sean Penn was playing the character Phillip ended up playing. Phil was supposed to play one of the thugs with John C Reilly.. Sean had to back out. Phil took his role and they started looking for two brothers that look like they are from Utah… So flash back a few years prior when Paul was at the film lab Sundance does every year. He met Ashley Clark. Who played the phone sex operator. Who. Is from Utah. She mentioned to Paul. I know actual actors from Utah that are also real brothers. .. But there are 4 of them. So we get asked to send in a tape. Then a second tape. Then flown out. The clothes we wore at that meeting were taken from us by Mark Bridges, and ended up being our wardrobe for the film. Back to John… He didn’t know he wasn’t going to be in the film anymore. So he showed up on set to find out when he is needed for the film. Only to be met by me and my four brothers playing the role… John was not only awesome. But came back a few times just to say hi and show support.
