from what you can hear here the guys had potential since the early days and a drummer like erik gave them songs the boost. i like their more 80's hc take on punk music that they got to leave behind to move on into more melodic territories. If Mike really states this was terribble stuff it quite shows he must have always had higher standards than your average friend's punk band. Nothing strange they got caught under Brett radar and had him recording/producing their music.
I think he actually liked the early stuff, back when he was playing that stuff from 83-87. But when he heard the 'Suffer' album by Bad religion, it made him want to do that kinda stuff, which is why he moved away from the straight hardcore stuff and went more melodic in the late 80s. He talks about how everyone thinks their band is great when they're first starting out in the NOFX hepatitis book and how he was the same, but after playing so many shows to 5-30 people all the time, he was getting tired of it and when they started doing more melodic stuff, their crowds slowly grew and by the early to mid 90s, they were playing Festivals.
They had to change, otherwise we wouldn't have NOFX. But I only wish they gave more value to this, and played more songs from their 80's repertories during the years, instead of those same fucking songs for decades. "Radio" and "don't call me white" are the ones I hate the most live. Finally they quit using "60%" as a first live song. That also lasted for like 12 years.
@@maximoutbound1265 I agree. It's quite irritating how much they play Eat The Meek, 72 hookers, Linoleum, and the 500 other popular songs they always play. I wish they played more off of White Trash and Maximum Rock N Roll. I'm just glad their final tour will be them recording live albums for each city they play. I do think it's possible they may play more 80s stuff.
Yeah this is dope. Wish they still sounded like this but hes still respectable and fun and speaks truth and its funny. Dr. Know all the way. Kyle that is not brandon.
Their entire discography is very diverse with sound. The only thing that seems to remain the same is the hardcore style drumming. They still have a lot of harder sounding stuff. Just not raw. Separation of Church and Skate, Hardcore 84, Reagan Sucks, Take Two Placebos, Three shits to the wind are all a bit on the harder side. I'm not sure if the hardcore aspect is necessarily what you're trying to make, but if it is, my point here is, their later stuff isn't ALL the same. Their most popular songs all just seem to be found by pop-punk fanboys and they get a hype-boner over the fact it doesn't sound like this particular EP. For the most part, they have a wide diversity of sounds.

i was looking up the old records of all these crappy pop-punk bands to see if they were ever decent in their early days. been through green day and nofx so far and im happy to say they've always sucked.
Nah, this is actually pretty good, at least for hardcore; they sound kinda like early Adolescents. I do think Mike’s voice could’ve been mixed better though.
I wanna hear them play this whole demo on their 40th anniversary tour 2023
final tour *

This is the best NOFX material I've ever heard.

Sorry Mike but your Steinberger bass DID NOT LOOK HARDCORE back then, that's the cheesiest looking bass, like the DeLorean of basses haha
What's wrong with Steinberger basses?
@@MonsiRecords it looks like Janet Jackson's bass player not for a hardcore band 😆
You say that, but Lil Joe Raposo ripped that thing up in RKL 😂
WHen NOfx was an actual good hardcore band and not some poppy commercials collaborating with the big festivals....
