When I went mushroom picking with my Dad as a young teen I wasn't aware or scared. But when we came back home my Dad revealed that we had came across a big animals den. At the time I was so busy looking for mushroom and not caring about my surroundings. My dad was loaded so I never thought about ghosts or animal attacks. We do have mountain lions (cougars) in the forest. Most beautiful place to live if you love natural food. Cleanest water and best memories of my life. Will always be home because Dad will never move out.
I drove some old grandmas and young to cut xas in Humbolt, Mendocino, Trinity, Modoc, Shasta county etc.. river roads some of those roads are sloppy and curvey as hell, tires be screeching down each turn. 1-2am at night no phone signal and gps stop here and there with none of them can drive. The Night seem to be so long and dark. I can’t imagine my car broking down with hardly any phone reception in those mountains. If No good tires or car, don’t recommend going in those mountains. Big bushy redwood trees hundreds of years old standing so quiet and windy. Some of those ladies say they so old Indian in those mountains. Well anything runs around in those forest.
I live in Eureka, CA. I have nephews who are avid hunters. Once, my nephews went squirrel hunting and shot a squirrel that was perched on a branch about 15 ft away from them. When they approached the dead squirrel, they saw 2 squirrels on the ground with the same bullet wounds on their chests. My nephews left the woods right away without picking up the squirrels.

Back in early 2000”s I went Hunting with my dad, my brother, a old man, my dad Inlaw, and his two son. We went two truck to bass lake. It was about 5am we park at the spot waiting for the sun to raise. We heard a loud sound like a dog barking on the pine tree circling around our pick up truck. My dad put on the car alarm to scare what ever the creature is but the creature never stop crying. My dad and the old man did some Hmong black magic that is use for to scare the phim nyuj wai, it was about 30min until that creature took off and cry out couple time very loud and gone. My dad Inlaw believe in Christianity and he say that it might just be an owl, but in his face you can tell that he was scared. That day we didn’t see any squirrel or heard any bird chirping. We never return to hunt at that place near bass lake anymore.
