    I saw Hoyt in England 1982... I've loved him forever...
    The cat was cool... and he never said a mumbling word...

    He looked alot like Roy Clark in this video. Hoyt seemed to be on everything on TV in the 70's and I remember him from the Black Stallion movies and I think, the Gremlins too. Great voice...sings like a man should sing!

    Hoyt was a T.V actor he had a role on the show Different Stokes. His mother Mae Axton was also a songwriter She wrote a couple of hits for Elvis Presley Heartbreak Hotel she was known as the "Queen Mother Of Nashville" she also wrote songs for Reba Blake Shelton and Eddie Arnold. Guess you can say the talent ran in the family

    When I was a young man living in Lake Tahoe I worked at Hoyt's house for more than a year and got to know him quite well. Hoyt was a larger-than-life good guy. At the time I'm afraid I didn't realize what a special opportunity I was given. Regardless, I have great memories of that time and miss him dearly. The Cat was Cool!

    Hoyt Axton's mother, Mae Axton wrote Elvis' "Heartbreak Hotel" So he probably got his song writing skills from his mother. He was in the movie GREMLINS, he played Billy's fathwr who bought Gismo.

      I saw an interview with Hoyt one time. He said he was desperate for money and sold the rights to Greenback Dollar for $300. Then it became s hit. At first he was mad he’d sold the rights so cheap then he remembered the song contained the line, “I don’t give a damn about a greenback dollar.” After that, he said, he realized he had no right to be mad because he didn’t give a damn! Funny gyuy!

    Great song, and reaction, Sir!!! Grew up on Hoyt. He is like a minor league Kris Kristofferson. Singer/songwriter/actor. He was a far better songwriter than he was the other two, although I love his voice. He wrote all the songs you mentioned, along with Snowblind Friend (Steppenwolf) , The No No Song (Ringo Starr), Greenback Dollar (The Kingston Trio' first hit). If you like The Pusher, you should check out Nina Simone's version... an incredibly soulful rendition.
    Hoyt was a very minor actor. His biggest roles were in Black Beauty, and he played the dad in Gremlins (he's the one that bought the mogwai, AND he invented the Bathroom Buddy). This song was a HUGE crossover hit and landed him a gig on WKRP in Cincinnati as Jennifer's (Loni Anderson) childhood sweetheart.
    This was by far his biggest hit as a singer. I would urge you to listen to more of his stuff. It's just great music. Evangelina, In a Young Girls Mind, Lion In The Winter, Water for my Horses, and of course You're the Hangnail in My Life... and so many more.

    I think "Cat" and "Dog" were nicknames given to the drug dealer's sidekicks.
    In all the previous choruses, Della was with the dealer.
    In the last chorus, she's with her lover rather than the dealer.
    The implication being that when the dealer got mad, he attacked Randy Boone, but rather than killing Boone as the dealer swore he would do, Boone killed the dealer and left (quickly) with Della
    .

  • @StevenSpolar
    @StevenSpolar 3 года назад

    So, the cat and the dog are not actually a cat or a dog. They are two buddies along for the ride. Hence the expression "hey dog" or that "cat" got it going on. The dealer is a drug dealer and "he snorted his coke through a century note". The song leaves a lot to think about. It's dark really. My interpretation is that either the dog or the cat killed the dealer and Randy Boone, the guitar player, was Della's lover.
