Majority of people will just hold a door open for you, no matter what, help you with heavy bags, or give extra change at the laundry mat. When I first looked into it, six years back, all the doula websites were glorifying the empowering, sacred feminine act if childbirth. Now? They avoid using these words: woman, maternity, feminine, mother, motherhood, breast, breastfeeding, wife, husband. They use these instead: birthing parent, partner of the birthing parent, partners, chest, chest-feeding, parental. At one of my classes, someone apologized for mentioning “mothers’ groups” and replaced it with “community groups,” which is ignoring what those groups are actually called. At another class, it was impossible to discuss men’s issues around birth and fatherhood, because we couldn’t use the words “men” and “father.” It really is an attempt to rewrite the way people perceive reality by changing the vocabulary. It is nuts.
