Nice video David. This was actually my first car. Christmas 1989. I painted it metallic green with a brush when Tamiya polycarbonate paint was what we had. My brother had the Topcat that year and he did his a light blue. Very fond memories and I wish I still had it. I sold it to a lad called Donald and he painted it purple with house gloss paint. I remember telling him off about it haha.
Thank you for taking the time to comment. Very much appreciated.👍 Those were the days! 😊I would have loved to get my hands on a Vanquish back in the day. But I was happy with my Terra Scorcher. Brush painting the bodies is something I miss!
Thanks for the awesome review! 👍 The part about its quietness is both intriguing and pleasing as I prefer a quiet car. I have a VQS waiting for me to build it and I did order the aluminium G11 and high caps for it as well.
Thanks! The hi caps look great and help with the performance too.👍 I'm not sure why the VQS is so quiet - maybe it's just that all my other buggies are so loud! 😅
Great review David! This is on my list at the moment but at the price point I keep looking at the Kyosho 4wd buggies. It is hard to justify this buggy against those but I am sure at some point it will end up on the bench 😂
VQS/Vanquish is great and I really wanted one as a kid. But, I'd have to recommend any of the 4WD Kyoshos. They are on another level and you won't be disappointed! 👍
I always think should I get it? Strange I always pass on it. Regardless you always do a Great review. I guess when I figure out what VQS means I’ll get one. Long live the Vanquish.👍
Thanks! I have no idea if VQS has any meaning! Probably just an abbreviation for Vanquish. Next time I visit Tamiya HQ for one of their open house events I might ask them! 😁
I like my Tamiya VQS kit. I did do the carbon conversion made by Fibre-Lyte. I did do this because the G11 part is weak. This solves many problems. Thoughts?
The Fibre-Lyte kit certainly looks very nice and would definitely help to improve the robustness of the VQS. 👍 I will probably do the upgrade myself at some point along with an Avante cockpit/driver too. But at the moment I've had no issues with the plastic G11 part...probably just a matter of time! 😅
Hi David. For the money, would you choose this or something else? If so, what would it be? Must confess, do like the as see style of the VQS. Many thanks.
Tough one! Answer depends on what you're looking for. If it has to be a re-re and Tamiya, then for the price this is a great kit. The VQS occupies a middle ground in terms of price. It costs more than most other 4WD re-releases from Tamiya (Hotshot, Terra Scorcher, T Dragon etc) but much less than the Avante and Egress. For a similar amount of money over here, you could pick up a 2WD Legendary series Kyosho. Better build quality, arguably more durable, but an older design. If you don't mind something newer, the BBX has vintage styling and looks to be a great performer. Might be worth a look. 😊
I've not done it myself, but I have seen it done. You'd need to cut some of the Avante body at the rear, but the main issue as I recall was the steering servo. It would need to be lowered for the body to sit correctly. I believe the Avante 2001 body is a little easier to mount on the VQS.
I believe It's possible, but would require some modification. The re-release VQS has two front body mounts. The Egress body doesn't extend far forward enough to reach the foremost metal one, but does cover the plastic one between the shock stays. At the rear, the normal Egress cutout for the body post appears to line up quite well with the VQS body post. But the Egress body (cut correctly) extends too far back and is prevented from being lowered into position by the rear shock stays. You would need to cut around 2 ~ 3 CM off the back of the Egress body for it to work. As I'm unable to lower the body down completely, I can't say for sure if there would be any clearance issues with the body and electronics/servo arm etc. One final thing, if the Egress body has already been cut to fit the Egress chassis, the front body mount is rectangular, so it would need to be rounded out to work with the circular VQS body posts. Hope that helps!
Silent running blue thunder mode.. doesn’t get cooler than that!😁👍 I agree.. the poor man’s avante label is undeserved.. it looks alot better with the upgraded shocks tho. I’m sure it runs on par.. if not better than the Avante.
I can't really compare it to the Avante as I have never run mine (one of my very few shelf queens). But it drives quite similar to the Egress and I don't notice a huge difference between the two. Admittedly, I'm just running around at the park.
@@rc-dom-uk Avante works out to be around £350 in Japan. I guess with Tamiya being the local brand, prices are the lowest. Our kits don't come with an ESC though. But while Japanese brands might be cheaper, the same can't be said for imported RC's - a Cougar Classic over here cost £300! 😅
@@rc-dom-uk Traxxas are virtually un heard of over here. I managed to find the Trx 4 Defender for sale at a few online retailers...priced around £600 or so.
I will be getting this one long before the Egress or the Avante. I have hear a lot of good thins about it and other than the names and prestige of the others I am not terribly impressed with them. I do like the Avante but I am not a fan of the Egress. So for price and performance I think this will be a better bang for the buck for me and I like the way it looks!
You won't be disappointed with the VQS! 👍 And it's a lot cheaper than the Egress or Avante. To be honest, I'm not a huge fan of the Egress styling myself, as I much prefer the Avante or VQS. (I prefer buggies with driver figures whenever possible ) 😁 For the money, the VQS is a great alternative and it runs well too.
great vid! i love my VQS!! - i put a HW brushless 10.5T in it. its a blast, but i roasted the center ball diff. how do you like the super stock in there? think the RZ would work well too?
The Super Stock is plenty fast enough for my needs and the VQS is one of my quicker buggies! But having said that, pretty much I everything I run would probably be considered slow by modern standards. 😅 The VQS kit gearing using the 21T pinion is 8.73:1. Tamiya recommends to use a gear ratio of 6.5 ~ 7.5:1 with the RZ motor, so it might run a little hot with stock gearing. The BZ recommended gearing is 9.1 ~ 11:1 and the TZ is 6.5 ~ 8:1. I find the BZ a little better suited to where I run (grass adding drag and forcing the motor to work harder).
Ah, cool, a teaser for something new from you, I'm already excited! Looking forward to seeing what that can be, ha ha! As for this one, this is a buggy I never managed to get myself hyped about. I sort of like all the 4wd Tamiya buggies, but the more fancier ones we'ren't so much for me, except maybe Top Force of course, but maybe it's less fancy than this one anyway. Is there such a thing as a fanciness scale for Tamiyas?
I don't think so! 😁 Standard VQS with yellow CVA's doesn't really have much shiny metal bling when compared to the Avante/Egress or any Kyosho re-release. 😅 I've been busy working on another RC project, but as I said, I'm not sure if it will interest most of my regular viewers. I guess I should probably put out at least one video and let you all decide. 🤔😃
Nice review. Looks like a fun park for some retro rc fun. On the topic of "the poor man's Avante" do you think there's any chance Tamiya rereleases the Avante 2001? Less expensive than the Egress due to some more basic parts like shocks and turnbuckles, but in my opinion it also has a nicer looking shell than the Egress. Looking forward to more running vids!
Hopefully a re-release of the 2001 is on the cards at some point, but really who knows with Tamiya. 🤷♂️😅 I've never owned one, but I understand it shares many parts with the Egress/Vanquish. So it wouldn't be that hard to bring back. Thanks! 😊
Love your commentary while having the car running in the background. Very Informative.
Thanks! I figured watching the car is a lot more interesting that watching me! 😁😅👍
Your reviews are always awesome, thank you 👍🏻
Thank you for the kind words! ☺️
Nice overview and video mate .... cant wait to pick one of these up 👍🏻
Thanks 👍
Interesting to see that failure of the shock.
They must be fundamentally different to traditional yellow CVAs.
Thank goodness for the Hi Cap option 👍🏻
I agree it’s a great buggy. One of my favourites.
Great review David and great tips for upgrading the car.👏👍
Thanks! 👍
Awesome RC and great mods and overview
Thank you!
Very nice looking Vanquish/vqs David. One I’ve not before, one to think about getting at some point. Cheers for the video sone great footage
Thanks! I highly recommend the VQS/Vanquish It's not got the prestige or bling of the Avante, but a great buggy in its own right. Looks great too. 👍
Would you let me know what camera gears you used and how you shot video while this VQS is running? Thanks
