This replica of the David is on display at the Old Santee Canal State park in Moncks Corner, SC. Inside the museum is a cutaway section showing the inside of the David, as well as lots of other information.

Very nice production. However, according to Donald L. Canney in his book "The Old Steam Navy: The Ironclads", the damage done by the David was minimal. It was six months after the attack that she left for overhaul and the damage from the David's attack had little to do with her leaving.

+Joseph Greeley The damage done to the New Ironsides at first appeared minimal, but after further investigation was found to be serious. Captain Rowan wrote, "The ship is very seriously injured, and ought to be sent home for repairs as soon as it is possible to spare her services here." Very soon after the attack, she went to Port Royal, SC for a few days of repairs. This kept her functional until June, 1864 when she sailed back to the north for a refit.See War on the Waters: The Union and Confederate Navies, 1861-1865 and Engineer in Gray: Memoirs of Chief Engineer James H. Tomb, CSN.

+Discerning History: Thanks for the information, I stand corrected. I am no fan of the Confederacy, but I certainly will admit to the bravery of them men who manned the David-and even more so, the men who manned the Hunley. I plan to build an RC model of the USS New Ironsides someday . . .

Does anyone know how or is there a video on how to plug a hole on the side of your warship?

Jim Wind In the documentary The Secret Land about Richard Byrd’s 1947 Operation Highjump expedition to Antarctica, there are re-enactments of the Navy crews patching up the hulls of their thin skinned destroyers when the icebergs and floes were cutting them open like plastic bags. The drill involved pushing metal mats against the onrushing water, then pushing a framework behind it, then jacking that up against the overhead.
