I can't thank you enough! This video saved me so much time. I recently took my macbook pro into apple for a repair. They had to wipe it and in the process installed Mavericks. When I got home and did a recover, I realized that my final cut, compressor and a few other items were not compatible with that system. I thankfully saw your video and realized I could wipe my hard drive and then restore from my last back up (which was Mountain Lion). Worked like a charm! You saved me so much time (4 hours driving time), waiting and money to try and get them to install an older version. :):):)
If you have a time machine backup this is the way to go to revert back to an older operating system.

This seems the easier process-at least compared to the downloading and creating a bootable drive process, but there seems to be less of a risk of losing files you’ve created and apps you’ve installed since the initial upgrade with the latter.

I had one question: I have too many files saved after I upgraded to Mojave from High Sierra so I was thinking of getting an SSD to replace the current HDD, Install it with High Sierra using bootable drive (following your video instruction :-)) and then bring the data back using the most current time machine back up (made when I had the Mojave). Will the back up bring Mojave back? Wouldn't I be able to bring back the data in full to the freshly install High Sierra?

I have an old MacBook Pro I want to give to my neighbors kids for school. I DO NOT want to use one of my computers backups. I just want the computer wiped clean (which I did) and then to install a fresh copy of an old OS as it is a super old Mac. this is like the most simple yet impossible feat in computers today. I just want an old copy of Mac OS that isn't someones time machine back up. I'm assuming I'm not alone this is ridiculously hard to accomplish.

I know your questions old, but it sounds like the solution would be to revert to your old operating system by using one of your time machine back ups, and then wiping all of your personal files off of the machine using a different method.

If you have Time Machine Backups all the way back to your Snow Leopard days, it would be theoretically possible to go all the way back. However, remember, it will erase and replace everything on your Hard Drive from those days, so you need to manually back up all your pictures and files etc.. However, Snow Leopard is getting pretty old, and things like Safari, won't view a lot of modern websites correctly and a lot of modern software won;t run on it. I would be very careful about going back that far.

      @@GemsbokAppleTipsandTricks
Hi there! 😊 I sooooo hope you wouldn’t mind answering a few questions for me. They are kinda related to the OP’s question...
Btw, my sincerest apologies in advance that this is going to be a long comment! I hope it doesn’t make your eyes bleed lol!
My Mac Mini has been a brick since late August 2014 (a long time, I know!).
When I upgraded the OS, it completely screwed me over. I was so upset because I didn’t think I could fix it (I thought I would have to pay an Apple repair company a lot of $$$ to revert everything to how it was before the upgrade, if it was even possible to do so), so I gave up and left my computer as an unusable brick, never using it again. 😢 I’ve only used an iPad and iPhone that were gifted to me ever since.
I forget what OS I was using (it is possibly OS X Lion, as that is what my Mac Mini’s user manual says it came with), and I forget what OS I had upgraded to (it was upgraded to whatever the most recent OS would have been in late August 2014 - I can’t boot my machine to check yet, because the hard drive is full, so I need to learn how to boot it up in a special way to delete some large files first before I can proceed doing anything with it atm), but I know that I _DO_ have multiple time machine back-ups for it on my external HD, and should have a back-up that was done very recently before the upgrade was done.
Hopefully they are “the right kind” of back-ups (idk if there were multiple ways of doing back ups).
      So my questions are:
*1) Will this method work in my case too, where the two Operating Systems are that old (I see this video is only two years old, having been published in March 2019, whereas my upgrade catastrophe happened in late August 2014)?*
This video gives me hope. I had to stop making content for my RUclips channel (under a different account name ofc) because of this massive screw-up.
_It REALLY upset me soooo much, and still does!_
There wasn’t any info I could find at the time about how to fix anything myself, like a video like this - I figured that the back-up would only restore files, but unless I had a disk for installing my previous OS, I was screwed (and ofc Apple sucked with no longer giving us an OS disk with our mac minis when we bought them - my Mac Mini is from 2011).
      2) The biggest reason I need to downgrade and revert back to a back-up is because (please don’t judge me) I was using a lot of pirated software in order to create the content for my YT channel…
I have been disabled since 2004, and thus *extremely* poor. I was actually doing my YT channel in hopes that I could actually make some income to pad my low amount of social security income, but right when my YT channel was close to 1,000 subs to be able to monetize it, this catastrophe happened 😢...
So yeah - I can’t afford to buy all the software I was using, nor rent it monthly like the OS I had upgraded it to was demanding of me. _ALL_ of the software I had pirated would no longer work with the upgraded OS (which I surmise is the main reason Apple created that damn upgrade, because it was a terrible “upgrade” and slow af!).
If I can get my computer working again, I would love to give it another shot and trying to make my life better by making income from RUclips. Amazingly, I still have the mass majority of subs still subscribed to me, in hopes I come back to my channel. Very cool people! 😊
I never wanted to upgrade my OS... The *ONLY* reason I did so was because my boyfriend at the time had bought me a video game for Steam, and I had never used Steam before. Steam told me that I would have to upgrade my OS in order to run it’s platform. 🙄
I told my bf I didn’t want to upgrade my system, but he absolutely pestered me about it and guilted me so much about his wasting his money on a game I wouldn’t be able to play unless I upgraded my OS, so I finally gave in and did it. I really wish I had stuck to my guns/continued to listen to my woman’s intuition!!!
So my second question is: *If I revert back, my pirated software should work again, right?* That is literally the only reason I would bother with trying to fix my machine.
      3) My third and final question: *Do you happen to know offhand what buttons I press/hold down to boot my machine up in the way that I can delete files on it when the HD is full like mine is, so that I can proceed with trying to revert it to a back-up?*
Actually, a side quick question (sorry!):
*Are there actually different types of Time Machine back-ups??? If so, how will I know if I have the correct kind that will restore the older OS **_AND_** all the files I had on my computer at the time?*
My external hard drive is full too, so I don’t have enough room to back up all of the files on my computer’s main hard drive before restoring/reverting.
_SOOO SORRY_ again for rambling a bit there and writing so much. *Please forgive me for that.*
Cheers! Thanks for making this video, btw! 😊

I am obviously not the channel producer here, but simple logic will tell you that if you create a time machine back up with your current operating system, you will not be able to revert back to an older operating system with that new time machine back up.
You can see in this video where he shows that his time machine back ups use the previous operating system. You would see with a new time machine back up that it will list your current operating system, not older one.
I know your comment is old, but this might help other people who have the same question.

Hey if I installed a vst or any loop kits to my fl studio or lodic would it delete those things to ?

    • @GemsbokAppleTipsandTricks

If you installed them after you did your upgrade, then yes it would delete them. This will bring your Mac back to the time you choose before your upgrade using your TimeMachine backup. So, before you do this, you should manually copy and backup any important stuff that you've created since you did the upgrade that you want to roll-back.

I save a lot of my files on Dropbox, do you know if those files will be deleted?

    • @randeum1863
      @randeum1863 4 года назад +2

No they wont be deleted because drop box is a website and app which is connected to the internet all your files will be saved there. You just need to log in to your dropbox account and all of the files will appear there.

Fucking Apple is more like it. It seems to be with their upgrades that they intentionally make them so programs don’t work.

    will my applications delete ???

    • @GemsbokAppleTipsandTricks
      @GemsbokAppleTipsandTricks  5 лет назад +2

You are reverting to the operating system at an earlier time from your Time Machine backup, so all the Applications you had at that time will come back. Any NEW applications or files or photos or music you have since then will be gone. So, it’s very important that you back those up separately so you can copy them back after.
