I had the opportunity to drive a 600 belonging to a friend in Los Angeles. You feel the weight but it handles well and doesn't drive as big as it is. Hydraulics are everywhere - windows, locks and even the trunk. Beautiful bespoke vehicle. These are NOT modified 280sel - every panel, window is unique to the 600.

Is almost impossible to believe this particular example doesn’t have A/C. Even in such expensive opulent car the A/C was optional. Today, even the cheapest car has it as standard. Times have changed, possibly weather too…

Fantastic car: possibly the best Mercedes ever. You can keep the overstyled newer ones and the godawful MB SUVs. This was from an era when cars, especially those from Mercedes, really mattered.

Everyone here is certain that the windows and door locks etc. are hydraulic. I worked on one as a mechanic back 60's and could have sworn that they were all pneumatically operated. I can remember hearing a compressor going in the boot when various things were operated, and assumed it was an air compressor as that's exactly what it sounded like.
One thing that was really memorable was the performance, in the workshop at the same time was a Lotus Elan SE, considered to be a really fast car of the times. I drove the Lotus and the Merc. and there wasn't much between them, and I can remember thinking that the Merc. was maybe a bit faster in a straight line, but the Lotus would be a clear winner in normal conditions such as traffic or a typical bendy road.

A quick google reveals many pneumatic spare parts for MB doors and boot lock, including a pump motor. Maybe MB fitted different types for some reason. I've listened to enough compressor motors to know exactly what they sound like, and I know what a hiss means. Some years later a rumour circulated that car door locks could be opened by cutting a tennis ball in half and quickly squashing one half against the car door lock, compressing the air inside of the lock. Motoring forums joined in and before long reports were coming in of people opening their Allegro, Cortina, Reliant and house front door locks with half of a tennis ball. thought about it and the only car I could think of where it just might work was the MB 600

The car windows and door locks were 100 percent hydraulic no air, the compressor was used for the air ride suspension.

I just loved him as a person a beautiful man it probably not long after him and patty broke up he was my favorite but Paul also was my favorite i was in love with their music George was a very special man in everything about him from music to his personality. And despite the production had already ended seven years ago, this car was not only one of the fastest back then (only Porsche could match), but it had the greatest presence of all cars I've seen so far. Really big SUVs weren't a thing yet in Germany.

7:30 seems the car was made for people who would never even touch the door handle what to speak of sitting on the driver's seat. In Germany for example only CEOs would own such a car who were providing well-paid jobs for thousands of employees. The employees would feel proud working for such a boss. There was no envy because they got paid very well. So why has this cult disappeared? It is plain and simple, there are no more such companies where thousands of people are well-paid. Even the Amazon owner Jeff Bezos drives Honda Civic because he knows that his minimum wage employees would freak out when he drives up in a fancy limousine.

George had a Grey MB 600, he might had had this one too, In those days Rolls Royce was as always very luxurious but Mercedes Benz 600 was used by the cool people in England, John Lennon, George Harrison, the hip series Department S, the TV comedy show The Goonies and in USA Elvis Presly and Hugh Hefner. Elvis Priestly shot the car and I heard that it was sold with the shots but the restored to its original state. I have only ever seen one of these cars up close. Have not thoroughly studied them but various times & places I have seen ratings of 247HP, 250HP, 300HP. Not sure what accounts for the differences. Were the early cars 250 & later ones 300? Starting in the early 1970s. USA required NET HP ratings. Does that account for the unusually low number? Also, given the weight of these cars, low end torque, rather than the highest possible HP may have been one of the design parameters. But I have long suspected, however, that these engines are seriously under-rated.
Consider the following. Rated 247 (250) HP at only 4000 RPM. By the tach, red line appears to be around 5000, and that seems low for a Mercedes. In the smaller cars the 2.8 litre (170 CID) 6cyl. Produced 180 (gross HP) & the 3.5 litre (215 CID) V8 produced 215 (gross HP). Given that the two smaller engines were capable of 1HP/cubic inch or greater AND that Mercedes had experience with racing engines in the 1950s that produced 100 HP/ litre of displacement, do you really think this approx 386 CID engine was only good for 250HP? Wouldn't surprise me if it was closer to 350/400. Same engine in the smaller (approx 4000 lb.) 300SEL was competitive with American muscle cars in the late 1960s. 250HP wouldn't have cut it against our engines. The heavy 600 may not go like a rocket but even at that size & weight it was no slouch. AND they weren't all out of breath at the end of the quarter mile. The top speed was well up there too and that necessitated having some serious HP just for the wind resistance.
Interestingly however, Jay Leno has one with a supercharger. Don't think he ever gave any info on actual performance of his versus stock engine though...

No, the windows are not electric, as you state. The wheel covers are not original or correct for the year, ditto the tyres.
If you think that a 600 could be mistaken for a Cadillac or a Silver Shadow, then you need a new occultist - each is unmistakable.
Although I don’t doubt your enthusiasm, the dumbed-down style of this video really lets the car down.

Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in EU :-( In Germany the Green party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing petrol stations to only one single state operated central gasstation per city or county. :-(((
