Anupama Chopra's Movie Review of Manmarziyaan | Anurag Kashyap | Taapsee | Vicky | Abhishek

  • Love, it is often said, is a many splendored thing. In Manmarziyaan, director Anurag Kashyap and writer and creative producer Kanika Dhillon offer us a deep-dive into this splendor.
For years, I’ve exited Anurag’s films raging with frustration and wondering why he inevitably becomes indulgent. Manmarizyaan is no different. He’s so damn talented but he doesn’t know when to stop.
Like love, this film is messy and flawed and glorious. You have to sign up for all of it.

This is the most mature indian movie I have watched. Must have been a little too spicy for many. Beautiful movie...
    1. An affair with intimacy
    2. Parent aware of the affair
No dad threatening to shot a daughter who has brought shame to the family
    3. Talk of abortion
    4. Kissing
    5. Infidelity etc
sometimes it felt unreal😄😄. I watched it in English dubbed I had to remind myself it's Bollywood. The 3 of them were a joy to watch and performed so well.

I honestly think Indian audiences are genuinely stupid. I agree with Mrs. Chopra- despite its flaws, Manmarziyaan is a genuine film with amazing performances, great music (probably the best soundtrack of the year), and solid direction. It’s a bit too long, but I don’t think this deserves to flop. It’s ridiculous that Race 3, and DHADAK mint 100 Cr’s and this cant make 50. Collection isn’t the most important thing, but I don’t understand how an Anurag Kashyap film isn’t pulling audiences but two star kids who can’t act pull massive crowds. Even Stree somehow made it to a 100, although while extremely funny and a great movie, kind of had a nonsensical plot. Manmarziyaan isn’t a masterpiece, but it should get more crowds than what it’s getting. I went in with zero expectations, only looking forward to Vicky Kaushal’s and Abishek’s performance, and it turned out to be quite entertaining. It’s kind of a shame...

Reviews after Toronto were average, it's ok but it doesn't stray from typical bollywood romantic films. Could see shades of tanu weds manu hddcs and probable what other movies anupama mentioned. Watch it for Vicky kushal, he part where abhishek comes starts to become predictable and less interesting. Abhishek character or his performance made madhavans look great, I'll be seeing tanu weds manu again after this average movie.

      @Finnola 6 лет назад

Watched it was ok, still a waste of money since 2nd half wasn't as good as first half. Anurag could have done it better or stick to his kind of film. Same old performance by abhishek, nothing new. People saw him in comedy in past films, for them abhishek in romantic would be probably liked. Because of him the movie drags and anurag cannot do much. Obviously we have seen other movies like this, the only thing that is a breath of fresh air is Vicky and tapsee. It's like contination of tanu weds manu.

The only thing I like about Anurag is his irrepressible indulgence. That is what lends the distinctive edge to his movies. What you call as messy and flawed is what I find original. Whatever is original cannot have a set template that the audience can relate to, it is often gloriously messy and flawed. However I do think instead of Abhisekh he should have taken madhavan.

Why Anurag is given all the credit? Critics should praise the effort put up by the Screenwriter. Anurag has just played the role of a manager in this film. Coz the film was supposed to be directed by another man. Anurag came on board after a while.

Robbie kills Vicky's future with his maturity n without a single physical blow. Kuch Ladkiyaan ek settled future ke khatir, pyaar ko fyaar samajke, pichle rishte ko aasani se bhulakar, naye rishte joddney ka mouka kabhi nahin thukrayegi. A good lesson for the Next Gen. Zindagi ki taali ek haath se nahin bajti. SalmanKhan as Vicky, Robbie as Abhi n Taapsee as Aish? Wish there is a sequel when Vicky becomes a millionaire instead of a Taxi Driver n Robbie dumps Rumi for a British girl in London 😃😃

Yes not good, it was overhyped. Anurag cannot do much other than what has been done in other films like tanu weds manu queen. Movie drags when abhishek comes in, maybe people will like it because he hasn't done romantic films recently. First half good, but it's not worth my money. Oh well, hope anurag gets back to doing what he does best.

Good review ...as expected from you ... I think those twin sisters dancing behind actress represent the duality of her mind ... all three characters are confused in their way and really don't know what they want....but the actress is the most confused one between two choices (I think Anurag wanted to represent that duality of mind through those twin sisters...the significance of the two twins is, in my opinion, most of the time we have two choices that appeal to us but we can't decide which one to choose ) ...The actress wanted to be a rebellion, but at the same time, she is also practical and knows the stability of life and marriage is also important and here Vicky Vs. Abhishek represents these two possibilities in their way...
funny thing in the movie is both Romi & Vicky wanted to be rebellion, but their parents are so understanding & sweet they couldn't find the fun of bhag ke sahddi kar lenge because girl's family always support their marriage except for Vicky's father who thinks his son is not mature enough to take the responsibility of the marriage and may ruin Romi's life (again so sweet and mature attempt to show the change in the society) ...this is very relevant to the current generation where love marriages are no longer a taboo.
To be honest, I loved the last five mins of the movie where both lead characters have a casual talk about why they married in the first place. ...and here you see Abhishek's real character as he is also a little bit twisted as the other two characters and not a god-like character played by Ajay Devgan in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam ...

In Toronto after TIFF saw the evening show, it's an ok movie. Watched it for anurag and tapsee. But the movie becomes bore and predictable after abhishek enters. He doesn't do much than b.c the love triangle stories have been done and there is no originality in his performance. His role is been there done that, weak point of the movie. Other than Vicky and tapsee were interesting part of the movie and their story. Tapsee and kangana have are the new women in today's day and age. Overall I wish the movie would be better. Because of Anand rai's previous movie i had preconceived motions. The movie is just ok.
